What do you consider ordianry? AutoCAD? Try looking at MicroStation.
It can handle large files with ease.

Umm, how about a 20+ Mb file, with a few reference files attached? Did
it in MicroStation 3.x years ago with no problems. (BTW, it still is
the same on performance in MicroStation 95, if not faster)

You've probably got a PC sitting on your desk which could handle what
I've told you about above using the correct application. No, I don't
represent Bentley or MicroStation or Intergraph (or any other
affiliates). I'm just one of many people who is astounded at how
poorly AutoCAD does with large Civil Engineering type files.
Do yourself a favor and check out Bentley's web site, WWW.BENTLEY.COM.
Those folks will be more than happy to help you out. They're quite
different than what the AutoCAD users are familiar with for service and

Here's one I wrote a while back, it outputs the layer names sorted by
alpha, to a file named [dwgfile].lay in the same directory as the DWG.
Hope this is what you were looking for, if you have questions, feel free to

Dear Desi,
The FTP tool I use [WS-FTP] has an option to force lowercase on all file
names. As you stated, UNIX is case sensitive, and will puke if you use
uppercase filenames. There's a link to the FTP tool on my webpage at:
http://www.olywa.net/delliottg
The link is near the bottom of the page, inside the colophon.
Hope this helps, feel free to email me if you have questions.

No Alpha's required --although they are nice machines. Any of my
Pentium boxes running Linux can do what Greg said with ease --and, of
course, they're all running MicroStation95. If you combine a
high-performance CAD package with a high-performance operating system,
then cheap, commodity hardware will do an amazingly good job.

Another way occurred to me if you are very desperate.
Recently there was a posting from someone who was using hidden views of a plan drawing and
was concerned about losing the solids that comrised his/her arrow heads. One solution posted
was that two mviews could be overlayed in paperspace one with hideplot on, one with hideplot
off. A similar solution could be used whereby the solids could be applied in paperspace over a
hidden viewport, then the drawing could be plotted with lines shown. I have no idea if this will
work!!! but again if your desperate....

Subject: AutoCAD Lt W95
From: jhapgood@ix.netcom.com (John Hapgood)
Date: Tue, 19 Nov 1996 01:15:34 GMT
I was wondering if this is a good group (comp.cad.autocad) to post
questions about AutoCAD LT W95. I would like to learn this program as
quickly as possible (or faster) but the book is taking way to
long and I can hardly ever find answers to my questions in it.
I do landscape and Irrigation work and I receive "Site Plans" on disk
from an architect. I could not even find in the book how to change the
weight (pen width) of a line or layer. I had to call Autodesk. I was
told to do it from the command line and not using the mouse and tool
bars.
That's OK but I wish I could have found it in the book. When I asked
Tech Support what page I could find this info on, I was told it's not
in there.
It looks like I will need HUMAN intervention If I am going to get a
working knowledge of this.
Judging by the volume of messages in this group I assume everyone is
very willing to be helpful or y'all wouldn't be here :-)
Thanks

Thanks for any help.

Nigel,
Certain invalid objects can throw AutoCAD off and cause the extents of
the drawing to calculate incorrectly. Run the AUDIT command. I believe it
will find plines with just one vertex. It will rectify them, and then you
can zoom out a bit larger than the big view, and find them and erase
them. Another type of entity to look for is a blank line of text. Use
QTEXT to help you find and erase these. If this doesn't help, WBLOCKing
just the area of the drawing to a new file will take care of the problem.

Quick way w/o lisp:
Type:
LOGFILEON
LAYER
?
*
LOGFILEOFF
Now, look for a file called acad.log (or aclt.log for LT)
and there ya go. It's a regular text file.

Chris,
AutoCAD standard fonts (romans.shx) are vector-based, and they are
defined and printed just like other objects (lines, circles, arcs), so
any printer you use will be able to handle these fonts and not know a
thing about them. In Release 12 and 13 PostScript fonts you use in
AutoCAD can be mapped to fonts your printer has loaded. You do this with
the acad.psf file. In this case the printer doesn't have to have the same
type of PS font as you use in AutoCAD, but a close match makes text
alignment and placement much easier. Just remember to edit the font
mapping table in acad.psf so that AutoCAD can send to the printer a
fontname that the printer can identify.

Subject: Are ARX Libraries useful now?
From: Graphic Computer Services Pty Ltd
Date: Mon, 18 Nov 1996 09:24:17 +0800
Our company have developed products in both MicroStation and AutoCAD R12
and R13 a bit in the past. We have not touched AutoCAD for at least a
year due to the difficulty in working with the initial versions of R13
and because is was easier to work with MicroStation.
Since then our developer status has lapsed we no longer receive any
products from AutoDesk and are thus uninformed as the the
latest state of the ARX development system and the associated
libraries. When we left it the ARX libraries simply contained
the same functionallity as the ADS and AutoLISP systems, which
was totally inadequate for our needs. They had promised extended
ARX libraries but they never arrived.
Are they now avaliable and more importantly what depth do they go to?
For example when MicroStation introduces new complex elements they
provide functions to convert them to a series of simple
elements that give the same representation as the complex element.
We had huge problems trying to interpret the MTEXT entity. Is there was
some way to convert the MTEXT element to a BLOCK containing
simple TEXT element?
Or if the MTEXT is now handled as an object does the object contain
facilities for extracting the display information?
Basically we are converting the MTEXT into another format so we need
to extract the positioning, size, style etc of each separate word or
line in the MTEXT element.
Regards,
Stirling Hamersley.

For my HI dmp42 plotter I had to make a new cable (as per instructions on

Windows driver disk) I found the new cable also worked for Autosketch 3
(DOS)
With the original cable the ONLY version of Autocad that I could plot from

I am using Autocad R13 C4 with Dos.
I would like to use the mass properties command on an assembly of solids with individual elements having
different densities. I presently use a spreadsheet to calculate all weights from the mass properties output

You need to configure AutoCAD to have an additional printer. This
needs to be a System Printer.
When in AutoCAD, you plot your drawing, choose the new printer you
have configured, make sure that the WinFax driver is the selected
printer, and away you go. Just remember that you may have to fiddle
with rotation. Just to a full preview to make sure it is coming out
correctly.

I assume you have checked the permissions of the serial port after the
upgrade (it should be: crw-rw-rw-) and also ensured that AutoCAD has
exclusive use of it? Also, you might want to verify the correct
connections in your cable. The AutoCAD Installation and Performance
Guide should have all this.
I had no trouble upgrading from R12 to R13 on SGI-IRIX, and my venerable
SummSketch II works fine.

Have you installed the Mouse Systems Driver for Windows 95? You can find
it on the Win95 CD (not the floppies) or download it from Microsoft (Win95
CD "extras"). Also, check the switch on the bottom of your mouse.
3-button Mode should have the letters PC showing, 2-button should have the
letters MS showing - this of course is counter-intuitive but true. And I
suggest you give your mouse the name Julien, after the famous architect of
the same name...

The command AMDWGOUT will save drawing views to an external file as pure
Autocad entities (ala WBLOCK.) If you wish to save part or assembly
geometry, first EXPLODE the items into 3DSOLIDS, then save as normal.
The explode path for Mechanical Desktop parts is:

Hei All, do you know about e Lisp routine to automatize the creation of
contours (polyline closed) with Autocad R:12 with POLCONT command?
	Well, my methodology :
1.- I digitize all bounderies of polygons of my map with polylines.
2.- With POLCONT I create a polygon closed (contour). First I select all
the polylines or all in display and picking with the mouse in middle of
every polygon, one by one. It´s very tedious and tired.
3.- Finally I select all the contours with the same thematic class and
with Change- Elev command I give it a id for export a dxf to Idrisi GIS.
Do you think it´s possible automatize this procedure?

Hi Thomas
I have a Kurta XGT and the only wintab driver I could find that worked
is the Graphtec one - emulating the summagraphics MM.
This worked fine under NT4.0
The summagraphics wintab driver kept locking up my machine, and I
couldnt find an actual kurta driver.
I got it from my local (Brisbane Australia) dealer on disk, but I'm sure
you should be able to find/get it somewhere on the net.

Subject: why all the windows?
From: peterson_rob@msn.com (Rob Peterson)
Date: 19 Nov 96 01:38:33 -0800
In ACADLT for W95, when I click on a .dwg file in a directory window,
ACADLT is indeed invoked but I must first do two things:
1) minimize the directory window which for some reason is sitting in
front of the ACAD window.
2) I must "cancel" the startup wizzard. It thinks I'm opening a new
drawing, I guess.
Now, my document is loaded into ACADLT.
In all other windows apps, when I click the appropriate extension
document, the app is opened and there I am with the document loaded,
etc. I'm wondering why I can't do the same thing in ACAD. I
probably have something set up wrong. Can anyone give me a clue how
to operate ACAD like other W95 applications?
Thanks for any help, Rob

the file that you will use to modify the menu is the acadfull.mnu
the others, mnr mns mnc are files that AutoCAD creates while it complies
the menu. these are templates. AutoCAD can read these files faster than
the mnu file. dont erase them, just ignore them.

Can anyone give me a reason and or a solution to why I am getting an
"Insufficent Memory" error message when I try to launch R12 from my DOS
platform? I am a student and have run AutoCAD w/ AutoVision with no
problems. I meet all hardware requirments and my hard drive has .66GB
of space left. I run a P-133 w/16MB RAM. I have defragmented my hard
disk, and erased all acad files, booted clean and reinstalled only to
get the same error message. Thanks for any help that I can get.

Your acad.pwd file has been corrupted. If you don't have a backup,
you will have to reinstall.

Subject: Waiting for Plot Regens
From: "Thomas Garrisi"

At work we just installed R13c3 on WFW 3.11 machines hooked to a Novel LAN.
We were using R12 DOS and by comparison it seems to take forever for the
same drawing to clear the print process in the R13 version. About 1.5
minutes compared to about 20 Sec. on a DOS machine. Any suggestions or do
we just take more coffee breaks.
We plan to upgrade to NT 4.0 for both server and workstations in the
future. Will this help?
By the way the comparison was done on two "Identical" machines P100 w/64
meg ram. One with the Dos setup and one with the windows setup.
Thanks in advance, please either post or E-mail to tgarrisi@netonecom.net

Subject: r12c4 plot in win95
From: Yias Thoj
Date: Mon, 18 Nov 1996 15:38:13 -0800
Our company just upgrade our systems from DOS and windows 3.1 to Windows
95. We have AutoCAD release 12c4 for DOS/Windows and a Calcomp
Pacesetter (plotter). Previously, we set the plotter as Calcomp
Penplotter, Pacesetter 2024 and worked fine. Since we've upgraded, we
can't plot correctly from Windows 95 with either the 2024 or 2036 plotter
drivers. Our systems were also upgraded from 486's to Pentium 150+.
The problem: AutoCAD will plot drawings but will clipped any drawing send
to the plotter. A portion of the latest drawn object was simply truncated
out of every size drawing sent to the plotter. We have tried several
supposedly new Calcomp drivers without success.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Please reply by email. Thanks.

Hi
This is what happens. When you define an attdef in a block it appears
in the attdef section in the block. But when you insert the block the
attdef is represented as attributes(attrib) in the dxf in the insert
portion of the entity section. That is attdef comes under block and
it becomes an attrib when you insert the block and appears in the
insert section under insert. That is an attdef becomes an
attrib when you insert the block.

Hi
The primary diffrence between block & wblock is that block
is specific to a file ie it can be used only in the particular
file. But wblock write to a seperate file so that it can be used by
different drawings. The entire drawing is wrote to the new file
except the unreferenced symbols.
DWG is the drawing file format of AutoCAD
DXF -Drawing Interchange Format , is an ASCII or binary file format of an AutoCAD drawing file for exporting AutoCAD drawings to other software packages or for importing drawings from other software packages.
DWF- AutoCAD uses DWF format to display DWG files on the web.
