Subject: Archibus/FM 6.1 problem on R13
From: David Wallace
Date: Thu, 21 Nov 1996 17:21:34 -0400
I have loaded Archibus/FM 6.1 Release 2 which allows for use with both
R13 Windows and DOS.
The installation, after requesting to install Archibus for DOS and
Windows completes with no problems. The batch file, AbatR13.bat, is
modified to include all of the suggested SET statements asked by the
documentation. Upon loading Archibus, no error messages appear, either
in the DOS screen or in the command prompt area of the editor in the
final stages of loading.
Drawings load with no problems and nearly all commands function
properly, including most that utilize dialogue boxes. However there are
a few functions that rely upon .dcl files, such as DND (Data Number) and
DED (Data Edit), located in C:\AFM\ACAD that do not function properly
and produce the message at the command prompt: "cannot load TM000039..".
Sometimes files named Tma00039 etc. are left in the project directory
and when opened, reveal "include directives" to .dcl files required by
that command.
AutoCAD R13 was completely reinstalled with the same results. Likewise
Archibus/FM. R13 and Archibus was installed on a laptop to see if it was
a computer configuration problem...same result. The same problem occurs
within AutoCAD R13 for Windows as well. When switching back to Archibus
on R12, no problems occur at all. The laptop does not have R12
installed, so the problem is not a conflict between R12 and R13 on the
same machine. I tried adding every possible other PATH to AutoCAD or
Archibus directories in the .bat file with no luck.
Anybody have any ideas?

Subject: Lisp Guru's help needed!!
From: Stephen_Tate@msn.com (Stephen Tate)
Date: 21 Nov 96 18:33:44 -0800
I have a problem with a lisp routine I've written.
One of the dialogue boxes contains 25 rows of 4 edit boxes and the
largest of the edit boxes can accept a string of 45 characters. If I
use the dialogue everything works until I try to enter more than 30
characters into the largest edit box. AutoCAD dramatically crashes
with various error messages the most common of which is HEAP ERROR
(when using R13 under W3.11) and STACK ERROR (under R12 DOS). I've
scoured my code and can't find anything wrong, which leads me to
think it is a memory problem. I've read the manual with regards to
Memory Management and I believe I need to add nodes/segments to the
heap.
Has any one encountered this problem and perhaps offer some advice.
Many thanks

Subject: Is CAD No More a Drafting Support Tool?
From: sherman@wolfenet.com (John Sherman)
Date: Thu, 21 Nov 1996 14:19:07
Hi;
I have monitored the comp.cad.autocad news group off---and---on over the past
several years. Used AutoCAD Release 9, 10, 11, 12, and now R13. Guess that
I am loosing my perspective about what is a computer aided drafting support
package application and real world economic benefit from it's use.
I almost---get---the---impression that CAD applications are controlling what
at one time was the skill required by people in system engineering and detail
design.
From my perspective; I will never support purchase of another AutoCAD drafting
support application......It appears that AutoCAD has decided to not maintain
or update one PC drafting support application product offering for real world
mechnical drawing support -v- A bunch of special versions for special prices
that aid someone doing somthing to cause value added product results that are
hopefully greater that the initial cost of the Autodesk software application.
I also believe that if some sort of "object" open system and standard is to be
adopted in the world wide computer aided drafting support PC applications it
should be "public domain" or "free ware." Kind of like the document
typesetting using worldwide, multilingual PC applications that operate on
multiple hardware platforms various OS(s) such applications as TeX, LaTeX2e,
and AMS-TeX.
With such a open system approach actual system development, design, and
implementation design may benefit world-wide; without discussions about who
can read or edit what design documents without purchase of some limited use
expensive computer aided design(CAD) software package.
Would be interesting to see(a posting of economic benefits $$) what specific
Auodesk application user(s) are getting with purchase/use Autodesk
products. Return on Investment(ROI) -v- Now offered Autodesk multiple
product PC drafting support products.
We see posted within this newsgroup pay---for---preformance related to CAD
operators......From some of the dollar amouts listed ; it appears that the
skill must be in the software that some unskille operator is working with.
I believe this can be the start of a interesting discussion.
Kind---of---like: "Real world value added system development with aid of
computer assisted drafting packages. Who does it, what worker skill, and
what benefits back to/returned to providing and customer organizations?"
I am open to the real---world realities; with my limited view I may have
overlooked somthing really important related to a PC drafting support tool.
Feel free to correct my perception of where the CAD/CAM PC application
industry is headed.
Thanks,
Have a good day,
John Sherman

Hello Friends,
finally I got an official letter from autodesk, stating (though in
other words) that they are too stupid to continue developpement for
any operating system but microsoft windows.
Guess what that means with regards to your question.
Next step will probably be a complete buyout by microsoft.
The competition was seen singing and dancing on the table.
Anyone likes to make me an offer for converting my custom autolisp
and ads applications to any other decent cad system?

Subject: AutoCAD WorkCenter and Internet publishing
From: "Geoffrey R. Payne"
Date: Thu, 21 Nov 1996 14:47:17 -0500
Does anyone know if Autodesk is developing internet tools that will
allow their WorkCenter drawing management system to publish drawings to
the internet?
Scenario is the user would enter data into an HTML form, it would be
"passed" to WorkCenter as search criteria, and the resulting drawing or
list of drawings would be returned to the user via HTML. The user would
then click on the drawing identifier and it would be downloaded and
viewed by any AutoCAD viewing application located on the client PC or
within the browser itself using the new DWF format.
Seems pretty simple and would be extremely valuable.

Hi,
I appologize if this is a newbie question, but I can't help my
ignorance. I just installed R12 for DOS and I'm trying to figure out
how to configure my Hewlett Packard Deskjet 855C to work with it. In
the plotter configuration menu it offers a list of choices, but none are
this printer, which is my windows system printer. I know this must be
an obvious one, but I don't know what to do.
Thanks for any help,

regarding the 3D-2D conversion:
it's too bad that you don't specify your nothing,
but i understand that you want to create some dimensioned
sections and elevations of a 3D solid object
* the most easy way is to use the SOLPROF command, you got to have
a modelspace vport in paperspace which displays e.g. an elevation
after the solprof command you got 2 layers. One containing the lines
that are hidden (something like PH-106) and one containing the
visible parts something like PV-106). With an orthogonal view you get
in fact a projection of your model onto a 2D surface, you can explode
the block solprof created and you end up with lines and arcs. With a
perspective view you'll get a strange cut 3D wire model. In the help
file it is called a profile image.
* you can plot the view to a .DXB file which you can DXBIN back
into your drawing. It becomes a very small line drawing at the origin.
The tricky part is the scaling back (dimensioning purposes).
I usually place a reference rectangle in the view, so i can scale it
back with the scale-->reference option.
The disadvantage of this method is that you get a lot of lines (it's
like a tracing) and that curved objects don't show very well.
* another method is to make a .plt file of your view and then import
it back using something like UNPLOT (Mountain Software) or use (in a
windows environment) something like CorelDraw or another conversion tool
to convert the .plt to a dxf and import that file.
The advantage is that the file is vector based.
These methods can also be used to create 2D line drawings of perspective
views, so that you can enhance your line drawings with black fills.
regarding dimensioning 3D solids:
i suggest you take some sections, you get 2d regions which are
relatively easy to dimension or you can use the solprof command as
explained above.
Hope this helps,
Marco Vlemmix

Lately I have configured several stations with dual screens. The
stations were Pentiums 166 with 2 matrox millenium boards in Windows NT
3.51. The results were amazing to have 2 autocad sessions running on
the same station in different screens! The thing is that if u compare
Autocad with microstation, Microstation is designed to have multiple
windows on multiple screen that would display the same drawing but with
different views and with Autocad, you could not open the same drawing
twice since you opened 2 sessions.
I hope this clears this dual Screen Thing for you

You can open two or more Autocad`s, depending on the amout of RAM in your machine, and open
different drawings every one of them.

Do a full install of your AutoCAD R13c4 as it is a full set. Before
doing this delete the earlier installation (NEW install) .If you have
done this method and still it does not work them delete the Render.cfg
file and reconfigure. Normally this problem is due to different versions
of the Render program mixup.

Joe,
You can find a detailed doc. at the Autodesk web site under the technical
doc section regarding connecting Ms SQL server with ASE in R13 through
ODBC. Through this you can also connect SYBASE. You can find the doc at

I would suggest first to have more free space in the local harddisk
both to have swap files and room to save the files faster.
I hope you are talking about R13. In this case with many applications in
the background you can have a ideal of 32MB RAM in the node and 64MB RAM
in the server.

Yes, Jim is right in saying that Solid Fills are not shown in 3D views,
if you try to view them in Iso or Perspective views they will not appear
as filled wth color or if you rotate them to make sides of 3D solid the
sides will not be filled .You can view them as filled ones using SHADE
command but can not plot the same.

Hi Jeff,
Inorder to run AutoCAD R13 in DOS one should have 16MB of RAM in his
machine and for Windows it is 32MB of RAM is preferred depending
upon the drawing size.

Don't go for the cheapest 17" monitor on the market (Daytek for
instance). Try a Viewsonic or NEC.They are not that expensive and the
quality they offer (crisp picture,high refresh rates) is worth the extra

Hi,
The AcGe library that comes with the ARX SDK 1.1 is useful to do such
calculations. You can also use it stand alone (without AutoCAD),
although I'm not sure whether the licence would allow that.
You can download the ARX SDK for free from www.autodesk.com.
If you find a better library for free please let me know.

Well, what's wrong with Print-GL, I mean it is sometimes pretty
difficult
to install, but after that it "works like a buick".
What enviroment you are using? DOS, Windows, rel. 12, 13, ....
If you are using Windows, there might be better drivers to use as a

Dear Thomas - To help understand the comparison we need to know which ACAD
plotter configurations were used for both Dos and Windows. For example,
Windows system printer drivers are generally slower than AutoCAD ADI
configurations. So under Windows use ADI if at all possible.

be loaded before any initial digitizer configuration can be performed.
Please refer to the section "Tablet/Mouse Driver Installation" of Appendix
B in the "AutoCAD Installation Guide for UNIX" for platform specific
installation instructions of this driver. You have to remove any previous
version of the R13cx Tablet/Mouse Driver or the R12 MoleMode Driver before
installing the R13c4 Tablet/Mouse Driver.
Then, perform an initial TABLET CALIBRATION (CAL). This step must be done
before doing a TABLET CONFIGURATION (CFG). At the AutoCAD command prompt,
enter TABLET and select the CAL option. First, select the extreme
lower-left hand corner of the active digitizer area and enter "0,0". Next,
select extreme upper-right hand corner of the active digitizer area, enter
"11,11" or "12, 12", depending on the digitizer's actual active area size.
It's not essential to select these points at the exact active limit,
slightly inside the active area will work. For more information about the
CALIBRATION (CAL) and CONFIGURATION (CFG) option, please refer to TABLET
command, in the "AutoCAD Command Reference" manual.
After completing this initial TABLET CALIBRATION, use the TABLET CFG
option to setup the appropriate tablet menu/screen pointing area layout.

The ARX SDK 1.1 (latest version) is available to everybody and can be
dowmloaded for free from www.autodesk.com or from the acad forum on
Compuserve. You can also order the printed manual from Autodesk.
ARX is a huge API (~250 classes and 3000 functions) that is much more
powerful than ADS. As an example, please find below the AcDbMtext set of
functions and the detail of the query functions.
I think and hope you will find what you need there.

AcDbMText::paragraphBreak
AcDbMText::stackStart
AcDbMText::alignChange
AcDbMText::blockBegin
AcDbMText::blockEnd
Detail of AcDbMText Query Functions: ------------------------------------
AcDbMText::actualHeight
double actualHeight() const
Returns the overall height of the bounding rectangle that surrounds the
formatted text.
AcDbMText::actualWidth
double actualWidth() const
Returns the overall width of the bounding rectangle that surrounds the
formatted text. Note that this value may be different from the value
returned by width().
AcDbMText::attachment
AttachmentPoint attachment() const
Returns a value describing the attachment point for the MText object. The
attachment point value determines how the text will be oriented around the
insertion point of the MText object. For example, if the attachment point
is AcDbMText ::kMiddleCenter, then the text body will be displayed such
that the insertion point appears at the geometric center of the text body.
The AttachmentPoint enumerated type has the following possible values:
AcDbMText::kTopLeft
AcDbMText::kTopCenter
AcDbMText::kTopRight
AcDbMText::kMiddleLeft
AcDbMText::kMiddleCenter
AcDbMText::kMiddleRight
AcDbMText::kBottomLeft
AcDbMText::kBottomCenter
AcDbMText::kBottomRight
AcDbMText::contents
char* contents() const
Returns a pointer to a dynamically allocated buffer containing a copy of
the character contents of the MText object. Formatting data used for word
wrap calculations is removed before the string is copied. NOTE: The
calling application is responsible for the memory used by the returned
string. The string should be freed using the free() function when it is no
longer needed.
AcDbMText::direction
AcGeVector3d direction() const
Returns an AcGeVector3d (in WCS) representing the X-axis ("horizontal") for
the text.
This direction vector is used to determine the text flow direction.
AcDbMText::flowDirection
FlowDirection flowDirection() const
Returns the direction that the text string follows from it's start to it's
finish.
Possible values for FlowDirection are:
AcDbMText::kLtoR (Left to Right) AcDbMText::kRtoL (Right to
Left) AcDbMText::kTtoB (Top to Bottom) AcDbMText::kBtoT
(Bottom to Top)
AcDbMText::getBoundingPoints
void getBoundingPoints(AcGePoint3dArray& pts) const
pts Returns an array of points (in WCS coords) defining bounding box of
text as displayed on screen
Appends 4 points to the array as follows: [0] == top left corner of text
area
[1] == top right corner of text area [2] == bottom left corner of text area
[3] == bottom right corner of text area
All points are in WCS coordinates
AcDbMText::location
AcGePoint3d location() const
Returns an AcGePoint3d (in WCS coordinates) containing the insertion point
of the MText object.
AcDbMText::normal
AcGeVector3d normal() const
Returns an AcGeVector3d (in WCS) containing the unit normal vector of the
MText object.
Note: It is possible for the MText 's text to lie in a plane that is not
perpendicular to this normal (see the description of setNormal() for more
information).
AcDbMText::rotation
double rotation() const
Returns the angle between the X-Axis of the ECS for the normal vector of
the current AutoCAD editor's UCS and the projection of the MText object's
direction vector onto the plane of the AutoCAD editor's current UCS. The
rotation value is in radians with positive angles as counterclockwise when
looking down the UCS normal towards the UCS origin.
Note that the direction vector need not be orthogonal to the normal vector,
although calling 'setRotation()' will create a direction vector that is
orthogonal. If the direction vector is non-orthogonal,
'rotation()' will fail (returning 0.0).
AcDbMText::textHeight
double textHeight() const
Returns the nominal text height of the MText object. This value is the
initial height used to display the object, but may be overridden by
\Hvalue; inline sequences.
AcDbMText::textStyle
AcDbObjectId textStyle() const
Returns the objectId of the textstyle currently referenced by the MText
object.
AcDbMText::width
double width() const
Returns the maximum width setting used by the MText object for word wrap
formatting. It is possible that none of the lines resulting from word wrap
formatting will reach this width value. Words which exceed this width
value will not be broken, but will extend beyond the given width. The
AcDbMText::actualWidth() member function returns the actual width of the
text, regardless of the maximum width setting.
If the return value is 0.0 then word wrap is currently disabled.

As it sounds like the transfer of data to the plotter is getting cut off
before the end of file, it could be an incompatibility between the older
version of AutoCAD, Release 12 for Windows, and the new operating system
you are using, Win95. A workaround to try is the use of the AutoCAD
Autospool feature. Instead of having to maintain communication directly
with the plotter throughout the plot job, what will happen is AutoCAD will
plot to a file, and then run a process you specify (such as a DOS batch
file). The batch file will use DOS to copy the plot file to the plotter.
You have to do some setup, and the plotter, serial cable, and AutoCAD
plotter configuration need to be set for hardware handshake (null modem)
communication. There is a technical document in the support area of
http://www.autodesk.com that walks through Autospool setup, if you need
help.

Wayne,
1. I would suggest you to take a full time course offered in a nearby
Autodesk Training Centre.Look at the Autodesk web site for the nearest
place at
http://www.autodesk.com
They normally offer courses depending upon the field level experience on
computers like full time and part time and some crash level courses.
They are the best ones to give training. They normally have a Placement
centres and you will be picked up easily with your HVAC expertise and CAD
knowledge you gain with this interest.
2. AutoLISP is one of the Programming Interface provided with AutoCAD
to increase the productivity by writing some general utilities to
complex applications say in your HVAC line.
3. I have seen such FAQ's at Cadence web site and many other related
sites.Many universities have such one FAQ on this group.
4. I think 3D will be very easy for you to learn.However I have seen
mostly people learn 2D first in AutoCAD and then goto 3D.
Contact your nearest Autodesk Training Centre to help your career.
BEST OF LUCK.

Try at the following web site

and the hpglprl.zip file. I think this is what you are looking for.
Apart from this you can also find many such programs in other Autocad

It looks like that the CPU tries continues to send the information to
the plotter and the plotter sends back a message that the buffer has
overflowed and there is no room for memory.Try increasing the memory of
the plotter as you say that it plots small ones fine.
Also check whether the cabling is proper and is as given in the manual.
Sometimes it can also be due to bad ports in the systems too.

As they are OLE object it is not possible. But there are many third
party applications on this type of Raster editing and conversion which
allows you to paste the Raster images as background and then draw above it.
Contact your local Autodesk dealer for more info. on this or visit the

Steven,
First I would suggest you to upgrade your AutoCAD R13 from c1 to the latest
c4 and then to c4a.
R13c4 is a full set and can be obtained from your dealer.Then you can
download the c4 to c4a patch from the Autodesk web site
http://www.autodesk.com
This problem is normally due to different versions of the Render program.
R13c4 contains many new functionalities and is true Windows 95 compatible.

My fault, I did not check to see that it was in fact a PFB file.
AutoCAD seems to have had a great deal of difficulty coming to terms
with PFB font files. For some reason, they are consistently smaller
than the size they are supposed to be in R12 and LT1 and LT2. For the
font in question, if you use a character height of say 1 mm, the
actual text will only be 0.8 mm.
After doing some further checking, it would now appear that someone
has decided to try and correct this, and now gone the other way. The
text would now appear to be larger than it is meant to be in LT3 (and
probably R13 as well).
Long ago, I had some problems when an architect wanted me to do some
drawings, and insisted on the PFB fonts (they are not acceptable for
most drawing standards). I had to come up with the following
conversions as he wanted the text to be a certain height. The table I
worked out was as follows.
CIBT____.PFB	80%
COBT____.PFB	82.5%
EUR_____.PFB	67.5%
EURO____.PFB	67.5%
PAR_____.PFB	67.5%
ROM_____.PFB	67.5%
ROMB____.PFB	67.5%
ROMI____.PFB	67.5%
SAS_____.PFB	72.5%
SASB____.PFB	72.5%
SASBO___.PFB	72.5%
SASO____.PFB	72.5%
SUF_____.PFB	67.5%
TE______.PFB	67.5%
TEB_____.PFB	67.5%
TEL_____.PFB	67.5%
Ah well, it looks like I am going to have to the same thing all over
again for LT3, although I will only do so if I have to for another
client.
Something like this does not worry me, but for those who do use it, I
can see major problems. You do a drawing for a client in R12 (or LT1
or LT2), send them the drawing, they plot it out using R13 and
question your parentage.
Autodesk should (must?) issue a fix for this, but you can then see the
dilemma they face. What about those you have compensated for he new
factors in LT3 and R13? The next time they access their drawings,
they will end up with much smaller text.
Makes you wonder what all the beta testing is about when things like
this slip through.

Subject: Matrox quirk with R12 - Help!?
From: mikemccr@airmail.net (Mike McCormick)
Date: Sat, 23 Nov 1996 01:34:26 GMT
Hi All,
     I've recently upgraded my graphics board from a Matrox Impression
2mg. to a Matrox Millennium 4mg, and I've discovered the MIllennium
has an annoying quirk. It seems that about half the time, when I zoom
or pan, the display list dumps everything but polylines with a
thickness and solid entities, like arrowheads. Basically, it won't
display the text, lines, arcs, etc., without a doing a full regen
first, manually.
This little problem is quickly becomming counterproductive.
I'm using R12 Dos on a P133.
Has anyone else seen this? Is there a setting I've missed somewhere?
Does anyone know of a workaround?
Thanks in advance for your input !!
Regards,
Michael McCormick

Subject: ActiveX Whip Driver
From: Greg Knight
Date: Thu, 21 Nov 1996 19:34:52 -0500
I am using the Beta ActiveX Whip Control with Internet Explorer 3.0.
When I load a page with a DWF object, I am advised that my Whip Control
is outdated. I would like to update to the release 1 control. ActiveX
controls are self installing - so installation requires no user
intervention for the mostpart. Upgrading is a different story however.
Autodesk provides no instruction in this regard...
Any clues here?
Thanks in advance,
Greg Knight
