Subject: My AutoCAD won't fully initialize
From: adrianjl@aol.com
Date: 25 Nov 1996 18:55:54 GMT
I have a 486-66 with 20MB RAM, and Windows 3.11, I'm running R13c3, and I
was running the windows version just to mess around, then I double clicked
on the R13 icon and AutoCAD comes up and just when it looks like it
finished initializing, it goes away. I mean no error message, no good
bye, no see you later... nothing, it just goes away. My computer doesn't
crash or anything, it comes up and then quits, the moment AutoCAD compiles
all its necessary files it quits. I don't remember changing anything that
may cause it to do this. Does anyone know what I can do?

Possibly another simple question but how do you save dimension styles so
that that you can use them in other drawings new and to modify?
Much help appreciated. I am haveing slow help from my supplier.

Hello Clay,
Our HP2DXF will translate your HPGL files to DXF format which you can load into
AutoCAD.
The program supports HPGL commands as well as some HPGL2 commands. It has an
arc/circle recognition which will convert lines that form an arc/circle shape
into an arc or a circle in DXF. This feature is very useful and it reduces the
size of the output file.
Program is available on PC and UNIX .
Please check our web site for more information, and demo disk.

I can "understand" this decision also, but I still consider it stupid.
(and from the rest of your text I assume you do so also, in spite of
your first denial...)
Otherwise, do you consider bentley (and others) the stupid ones?
To me this boils down to the question: Does a company focus on the sucess
they had in the past, or on the success they will have in the future?

I haven't checked, but I expect those "real 3d cad systems" to be a
bit more expensive than the ones we usually discuss about here.
And then, I don't really need the features of a full mechanical design
package to justify every price tag... But maybe I'm wrong here and
someone may enlighten me. Please do!
Unfortunately we allready have another relatively obscure (though still
"decent") cad system in wide use in the company, and we rather tend to
move to a more standard one. How common are ideas or catia in the field
of building technology (Arch/HVAC/El.eng) ?
A side note about Lightscape: I know this is some good software. But
the radiosity approach to light simulation they use is only practical
for limited size projects. And yes: You notion about "small" and "big"
may be quite different from mine. There just is no alternative to
Radiance in that field, and Radiance requires UNIX to be useful.

This won't work, as when you have file locking turned on, AutoCAD
first tries to find the relevant lock file and if it finds it, it will
display its contents. If it does not find a lock file, it then looks
for the relevant file.
The solution is to turn file locking OFF in the Preferences dialog.
But as you have a lock file already, you will have to manually delete
the lock files. The extensions for lock files end in K, so a drawing
lock file is DWK, a font lock file is SXK, and a menu lock file is
MXK. File locking in AutoCAD only prevents another AutoCAD session
from accesing the file, however even wile the files are being used,
you can simply go to a shell, or into File Manager/Explorer and delete
them.

If you are using the DOS version of R13, you need to change this in
your deiver configuration. For the Windows version, it is in the
Preferences command dialog.

In reviewing the Installshield documentation for this particular error
(112), this will occur when a) you do not have a TEMP environment
variable set or b) there is not enough disk space.
The AutoCAD installer uses Installshield which requires that there be
a minimum amount of disk space available to proceed with installation.
It copies some temporary files to the directory pointed to by your
%TEMP% variable. R13c4 needs roughly 3mb worth of initial disk space to
get started.
Check your TEMP variable first. If it is *not* set, create a scratch
directory on your local machine (ex C:\TEMP) and set the TEMP variable
by:  SET TEMP=C:\TEMP.

Hi Glenn. Sorry to hear about your business. I began as a hand drafter;
got a 2 year degree in drafting design tech; worked for several years
before I became the computer tech; and now spend 1 hour a week in Cad if
I'm lucky. It's been an excellent stepping stone for me, and with your
expertice in electronics, you could probably do very well.
Bottom line, really, is if you love it, go for it.

Subject: Re: Cad color to line/weight standards
From: JAS - Global Village
Date: Mon, 25 Nov 1996 13:04:56 -0800
We use a simple set of standards (though I'm sure they're NOT industry
standards). When using 256 colors (16 is not enough when your trying to
keep track of 50 layers or more) we assign colors to thickness by the
brightness of the color. color 50 is the same width as color 120. the
last number is the key; and we assign thickness as follows:
xx0 = 1.0	Borders
xx1 = .50	Centerlines, etc
xx2 = .35	Edge of pavement, bold text
xx3 = .25	background, light text
xx4 = .18
xx5-9 = .13
this leaves us 5 pens that we assign to 1/2 tones in varying thickness:
255 = 1.0
254 = .50
253 = .35
252 = .25
251 = .18
The nice part of this system is that you can tell what will be bold by
looking at the line (If it's bright; it's bold).

that the tube does not just bend in one plane, it bends in 2.I have
tried extruding a circle along a central 3D polyline and spline curve
fit, but it wont work, i have also tried using lines and fillets and
then creating a pline from them, but that dosn't work either.
Any Ideas????

Like I said before, rename the males of our species to something else,
(like, aah... 'zop', whatever) and change the meaning of 'man' and 'men'
to mean exactly the same thing as 'humans' and 'human'. Then all the
existing terminlogy and centuries of literature about 'mankind' can stay

Steve,
	I took Tim's advice and restored from tape. Found that the only files
called for from WINNT\SYSTEM32\ were MFCANS32.DLL and MFCUIA32.DLL.
R13C4 seems to be working; I've been using it all afternoon with no
problems.

IMHO, Autocad is a tool that is used by engineers, designers and
architects, etc to help them in their work. When viewed from this
perspective it sounds absurd to consider it as a career. For example,
you would never consider asking "Is a hammer a good career to pursue?"
There are plenty of contract and temporary positions available for
competent drafters and designers who are knowledgeable in the use of
Autocad. Does bouncing from company to company sound inviting to you?
If so, go for it. If you're already competent with Autocad there is
really no risk to try this out for a while. Just call a couple of your
local technical staffing agencies, and let them know you're available.
You also need to consider what type of work you might end up doing as a
contract drafter. You might end up making endless changes to redlined
prints, or converting hand drawings to cad. You may end of working at a
company that has no organized standards as to how to draw. Are you
easily frustrated by things like this?
I know several people who started out working drafting contracts and were
eventually offered permenant positions. Many companies these days used
contract techs as a try before you buy human resources department.

Can anyone give me an idea as to where I can find some good mechanical CAD

Are there any standards set up by ASME or ISO for this type of drafting?
Thanks for your cooperation.

HP's ME-10 is a CAD drafting program developed and
sold by Hewlett Packard. It is a 2D drafting program-
It has its own database of course, but can import
and export DXF files.
The architecture is a bit different than AutoCAD's
and it is customizable with a macro language etc...
Quite popular in Germany but maybe 20-50 times less
licenses than AutoCAD. Runs primarily on HPUX workstations
but there is also a Windows version.
I believe that HP has a WEB site if you need more info -
search for mechanical design MDD division....

I have one of these, and it has worked perfectly for the last four
years. Only recently has it been "retired" to being a standard
printer as I now have a DesignJet 350C, however it still plots the
occasional drawing from AutoCAD R12/WIN, LT2, and LT3.
Which version of LT are you using? With LT1, you need the HP-GL
"Interim" patch. This corrects the problem where all lines end up
being dashed.
With LT2 and LT3, you use the HP-GL driver built into LT, and choose
the appropriate model.
A bit more detail on how you are setting things up might help.

Yes, there are. The BSAA (Business Software Alliance Australia) offer
a $ 2500 reward for turning in someone violating a member's license

Paul:
To change the background color from white to black you select the
Options pull down menu, select Preferences, select the Color button, and
finally change the background color to black.

  that pretty much says it all!
  in most architectural/engineering firms drafters
are being phased out. with the stiff competition
and small fees, firms have to do more with less
people. young engineers and architects are hired
with knowledge of cad tools, so they can do design
and documentation at the same time.
