This is certainly true, Ed, but just like the people who use the advanced word
processing software to type manuscripts, there are few drafters around that
understand how to take the art of drafting beyond the drawing board with the
help of CAD software. If all we have to look forward to is trading about $40
worth of manual drafting tools for $10+k of electronic tools, then you're right.
It's my opinion that the person who can go beyond that level who will be in most
demand.

How much free space do you have on your hard drive? How much memory in the
computer? Are you running Windows or DOS Acad? Under which operating system?
Have you seen a chiropractor? (grin)
All seriousnes aside, you need to give some more background on your system in
order to help diagnose problems. I believe I've seen this error mostly
associated with too small a swap file under Windows. Try making a bigger one.

I found a response to the same question I posted on the dBUG(downtown
Macintosh User's Group) BBS in Seattle, WA. I couldn't find CloseView
either on my hard drive or in the dBUG software archives.
"Apple has a control panel (should be on your hard drive somewhere) called
CloseView. It's for people with visual impairments. It lets you magnify
any portion of the screen and also reverse the color.
I'm not sure if it can reverse the color without magnification thoŠ"

Subject: ASI_NEXECUTE, retrieving data...
From: polanskt@chesapeake.net (Thomas N. Polanski)
Date: Wed, 27 Nov 1996 11:57:33 GMT
To all and any ASILISPers:
ASILISP allows you to send a native database command to your current database software
through the ASI_NEXECUTE command (as opposed to preparing the statements, opening a
cursor, allocating the cursor, and fetching the data through the standard SQL processing
functions in ASILISP). The ASI_NEXECUTE statement is much less "klunky" b/c it seems in
ORACLE that more often than not the SQL statements I use are considered "native" to ORACLE
in ASILISP (and thus CAN'T be prepared) and the ASI_NEXECUTE command must be used (e.g,
connect by..., nextval..., truncate table..., column[with odd char. such as #], etc.,
etc..
The problem is, is there any way to get the data generated from ASI_NEXECUTE back to
autolisp? The best I have done is, when using ASI_NEXECUTE, I precede a select statement
(if I am lucky enough to be able to insert the returned data to an existing table) with an
"insert into table (select...)" and then select from that table with the standard
prepare/cursor method...  Anyone???
Sincerely,
Tom

Looking at it slightly differently, the skill is drafting, you would
be surprised how many "design professionals" haven't a clue how to
turn their "designs" into buildable real-world information. The computer,
while basically expanding your capabilities, is, let's be frank, a piece
of cake. The trick is abstracting, organising and presenting the
relevant data (and no more, mind you: this is where VR is a crock except
for pulling the wool over the clients eyes) whether you use a cray or
stick marks in clay. Get that down and you can pick up the relevant
CAD skills in a week.....

Subject: Mirror Text Problem in R13C4
From: kreaver@freenet.columbus.oh.us (Kevin Reaver)
Date: 27 Nov 1996 07:24:20 -0500
I work in an office with 4 ACAD machines. Two of the machines
automatically re-orient dimension text after mirroring and two do not.
Mine doesn't. I've compared system variables, Dim variables, and tried
MIRRTEXT both ON(1) & OFF(0). While Mirroring the Dimension (dragging it), the
text "appears" to be correct, but upon picking the second point, it reverses.
I am using a P5-166 with Win'95 and ACAD R13C4. Can anyone help?

I quit my last company after 2 weeks beacause they bootlegged acad r11
deleted half the program because the administrator read an article on
how to streamlin acad r12. There were completly no dialog boxes to use
anymore. I told him that article was for acad r12 not r11. So i asked
him if I could call autodesk or get the program reinsatlled. He said we
do not talk or communicate with autodesk. So after 2 weeks of working
with a
hacked up acad program not to mention all the cigarette smoke, i flat
out quit and told my next company " If you have bootlegged the Acad
program, I don't consider you a professional company and I won't work
for you".
There is no place in a professional company for a pirated copy of Acad.

Date: Wed, 27 Nov 1996 14:35:52 GMT
I was having problems with the drafting standards inside of Mechanical
Desktop. When I updated the preferances from ANSI to ISO the drawing
views don't update.
I was told to use the AMUPDATEDWGVIEW command to force regenerate the
drawing.
Q. Why does this reset the location of my dimentions. I use the
_AMMOVEDIMN command to re-position the dimentions, but they keep on
resetting themselves to thier original location when a view gets
updated. Is this supposed to happen?
Any help would be appreciated..

From: Bob Doncom
Date: Wed, 27 Nov 1996 15:23:00 +0000
Absolutely,
It's a great career, providing you're a good designer.
The CAD tool is just that.
In the past years, I've worked with various people, some of whom can
draw (i.e. they're good draughters), but won't use CAD, some people who
can fly CAD, but produce very poor design work, some who can't do
either... :-( , and a very select few who can do both, they're
the guys (or girls) who can make an easy living with CAD, because they
have the design ability and the knowledge of the tool itself.
If you like CAD, give it a go, but I'd look at your design skills at the
same time, to try and get a feel for how easy a career it will be.
Have fun (don't be put off)

We are in a similar situation. We are the Facilities Management Division
at a university. We purchased full versions of Autocad. We deal in
renovations, new construction, maintenance, our own steam distribution
system and other utilities such as telecommunications, chilled water
system, etc. We work with private sector firms as well. We have been
running LIGITIMATE PRODUCTION COPIES as you call them, but when we got
our upgrade for R13 because we have "University" in our name they sent
us the educational version instead. According to our dealer there is
nothing we can do about this because it's Autodesks' new policy. All of
our people are professionals in the work that they do and the education
and training they have accumulated over the years.
There is a place for this copy in the classroom but not in a "production
environment" with professional responsibilities. To me this is just a
kick in the face.

I am using a Summa III 12x12 with the wintab driver [R13c4, win95] and
my buttons are programmmed as follows:
***BUTTONS1
[2];
[3]^P'REDRAW;
[4]^C^C^PLINE
[5]^C^C^PCIRCLE
[6]^O
[7]^PMIDpoint;
[8]^PINTersec;

[B]^PQUADrant;
[C]^C^C
[D]^PNEAr;
[E]^PPERPend;
[F]^P'ZOOM;P;
[0]^PCENter;
Be sure to put the buttons definitions under both ***BUTTONS1 and
***AUX1
Again, this is working for me under win95. There are problems with the
summa wintab driver which are supposed to be fixed someday (slow cursor
response around the screen)

Subject: AutoCAD DXF documentation.
From: "Felix Alvarez Jr."

I'm looking for the most up to date and complete documentation for
AutoCAD DXF. I'm writing a converter from DXF to an internal format and
I need the most up to date specs. I have the AutoCAD release 13 manual,
but it seems to be lacking information. I found some stuff on the web
but there are still things that seemed to not be there. Could anyone
please direct me to the latest, most complete, documentation. Thank you,

Only if your digitizer packet encloses special digitizing software you
can escape the calibrating. Inside AutoCAD there is no way to digitize
without calibration.

now the simpliest simpliest way to fix it (boy this is crazy) is if
AutoCAD is installed on another machine, replace the "ACAD.PWD" file.
Make sure however, that the other user in loged OUT of autocad before
copying the file over. Start autocad, then exit out. I would then copy
the ACAD.PWD to another file like ACADPWD.SAV. if it happens again, you
have your own copy of a good PWD file.

Jose - The update from c3 to c4 is free to registered
customers. But it is not available electronically, you do have
to get the CD or diskette set through your AutoCAD educational

What about it is failing? Does the extrude fail after trying or does
the extrude command not even allow you to select the polyline. Do you
get some kind of error message? It's hard to tell without more info.
If the polyline is not closed, it won't extrude.
If the polyline is closed, the nature of the curve might prevent it
from extruding. For example, a polyline that intersects itself will
not extrude.
Also, you didn't ask but I'll offer it anyway...I don't think it's
possible to get the results you are looking for with just R13 and it's
ACIS solids.
I have thought about doing what you are trying but have never found a
way to have the solids extrude in such a way so that the curves blend
together from one elevation to the next. The only type of software
I've seen to do such things are NURBS surface modelers.
Don't let that stop you from trying though...if you come up with
anything I'd be interested in hearing about it.

I feel that as you are using the OSNAP in the line command it is not catching
the right points with the zoom factor you have mentioned. Try also by
reducing the pickbox size.
Try to avoid OSNAP inside the program as this will cause some time problems
like this.

Erich,
Instead of going the Digitiser way for a short duration , I would prefer
a going the Scanner way. You can have a raster to vector programming
addon on top of Autocad so that it will help you in future.
Even if a single sensor goes in the digitiser then you are gone with the
investment.
But it is now upto you.
