I can echo that; I've had experience with two brands of tablets, Summa

Too bad they're having trouble with Win95.

What are you lookling for? There is an old Autolisp program called
FPLOT.LSP that allows you to plot math functions. It takes a litle bit
of lisp knowledge in that you have to define each math function as a
lisp function and then pass that function to FPLOT.
If you are interested send me an email and I'll forward it along.

Whether the students are learning the specifics of how to use the
software or how to use the software to solve design problems or
engineering problems or any other types of problems...the point is
they are learning how to use the software.

I wasn't debating the educational banner...I agree if they have a
banner it should be discreet. I also think that having students
working on real projects is a great way to learn. But this didn't
sound like the situation. Nowhere in the original post did it mention
students working on projects...it mentioned a professional Facilities
Management Department trying to get work done with educational
software. In addition, if students are doing work for a the Facilities
Management Dept., they should be using that departments fully licensed
versions to do the work.
> In short: Educational versions are not only for learning use of the

So does that mean that if a company hires a person to do work and they
don't know how to use AutoCAD, then that company should be entitled to
an educational version of AutoCAD until that person gets up and
running? Hell, I (and I would think most people) learn something new
every day...should we all be using educational software?
The fact is that if the drawings are used for professional purposes
(i.e. someone makes money from them), the drawings should not be
created with an educational version.
BTW...I have learned that we may be talking about something unrelated
to the original post. It seems that Autodesk may have sent out
"educational" updates to legitimate users. If that is the case in this
situation then Autodesk goofed.
See...I learned something new.

I've seen a number of posts regarding splitting comp.cad.autocad, and
myriad reasons for how, why, when, etc. Could someone explain why it's
apparently so difficult to set up a new newsgroup, when there are 6
different groups for a game like Quake which was released just a couple of
months ago? Admittedly I like to play Quake, but I make my living with
AutoCAD, and would like to see some more specific topics available. Anyone
care to edify me?

Check with your ISP's and see if there's a mail box limit. I've sent in
excess of 85Meg (Compressed) of drawings in one shot without a problem.
I did have to call my ISP and have them bump up my storage limit as well,
the client needed to this also.

Subject: WHERE are my blocks going?!?!
From: wmill@execpc.com
Date: Wed, 27 Nov 1996 20:11:09 GMT
Ok, I am about at my wits end here; I REALLY hope someone can help me
before I !@#$@#$%!%....
pant
pant
pant.
sorry.
Ok, here goes
Running AutocadLT 3 for Win 95.
I have 3 title blocks, one at Csize, Dsize, Aszize, etc.
The Title layers are all in paper space, as seems to make the most
sense. I work in model space, and scale view ports with Zoom XP, etc..
I started a drawing with Dsize (24x36) as a template. I decided to use
an Asize sheet to plot on, so I tried to insert the Asize into paper
space; I typed DDINSERT, choose file, found it, and double clicked it.
Ok so far...
I hit ok, and right away I see something is not right; the prompt says
Insertion point; but there is no outline of the block. Anyway, I keep
going, go thru all the prompts, (XY scale, etc.) and when I am done,
nothing happens; there is no block, no errors reported; just nothing.
Its as if all went fine, but the block i selected is not in my
drawing; well, actually, if I choose to insert another block, it IS
listed, as a block in the drawing, but I could insert it 1,000 times
and never see it.
Am I missing something here? should this be this complicated?
I am sure there must be some little twiddle or variable somewhere
called BLOCKIAMSTUPID or something that needs to be switched on or
off....
I have tried this both in Paper space and in model space.
No luck either way.
I *have* successfully inserted blocks as files before, so I am
inclined to think this has to do with these title block drawings, but
I have no clue as to what it may be.
Any info helpful,
tony

There is your problem right there. The stuff you are trying to insert
was drawn in paper space. I haven't tried this in LT but in R13 when
you insert a dwg file into a drawing, AutoCAD ignores all the paper
space stuff in the dwg file you are inserting. If the drawing your are
inserting has nothing *but* paper space objects, you get nada.
When you insert a drawing file it is turned into a block definition,
and I think that block definitions just don't have any kind of
allowance for paper space objects. It would seem like a pretty easy
thing for Autodesk to implement but it just hasn't been implemented
for whatever reason.
So I believe the solution to your problem is to create your title
blocks in model space, and then insert them into paper space.
If you need to move your title blocks from paper space into model
space, open up the title block, switch to paper space, then use the
WBLOCK command and wblock all the paper space stuff to a new file.
When you open the new file, all the paper space stuff (even the
viewports oddly enough) will be in model space.
Hope this helps.

You might have to try some different things to find out what about it
is failing.
Does this happen with all models or just particular ones? Are your
models solids or surfaces, or both? Are you using any third party
software? Which rev of R13 is it (c2, c3, c4, c4a)? Is there something
in your prototype drawing that is causing it to choke?
You might try creating some very simple solid models in a clean
drawing (no prototype) and see if those export. Try the same with a
surface model.
Anything else unusual? What are you running R13 in (DOS, 95, NT 3.51,
NT 4.0)? What kind of system? Have enough hard disk space? Are you
wearing your lucky socks? Got milk?
Just suggestions....I have no idea what the problem might be.

I have a P166 running R12 for Windows under Win 3.11 -- works great. I
recently installed NT4.0 (seperate install NOT upgrade) and R13 -- they
also work great. Next I made a NT 'shortcut' to the R12 executable. The
program starts up and operates (draw and save) just fine. When I try to
open a file (created in R12 under 3.11 or NT) only a very small portion of
the information seems to get to R12. Any ideas ??

Sounds to me like the enviroment variables ACAD and ACADDRV are not set.
This can be done in your autoexec.bat file, or in an Acad.bat (or
similarly named file).
you should have something like
ACAD=c:\acadr12;c:\acadr12\support;c:\acadr12\fonts
(this isn't exact as I cannot remember the directory structure of r12).
likewis ACADDRV should point to the c:\acadr12\driver
directory or whatever directory contains the driver files
(again I cannot remember the r12 directory structure).
In addition, I believe using the -r switch from the command line will
invoke autocad directy into the configuration menu, bypassing any
possible problems you may be having with the drawing editor.

Subject: Re: WHERE are my blocks going?!?!
From: "David E. Gonsalves"
Date: Wed, 27 Nov 1996 21:30:02 GMT
It sounds as if the block you're inserting possibly doesn't have it's
insert where you think it is. In other words, the block might have been
built starting at 0,0 for the lower left hand corner (that's how I do my
title blocks), but the base (IE insert point) has somehow been moved. If
it has moved substantially, say hundreds of thousands of feet (can you say
student/intern?), when you insert it, it won't show in the crosshairs, nor
will it go where you think it should because of the built in offset. What
you can do to see if this is the problem, insert the block into a drawing,
then do a ZOOM EXTENTS. If the block inserted, it should show up some
where. If you had entities in the drawing, most likely you will have two
little dots in opposite corners. If you zoom up on each of them, you'll
find the original drawing, and hopefully the nefarious block. If you are
getting the block, then the fix is easy, open up the original drawing, and
reset the insert point using the BASE command, this allows you to either
pick the insert point, or enter a set of coordinates to set as the insert
point of the drawing. If the block isn't inserting, go and check your
title block drawing and make sure that the title block actually exists (can
you say intern/student?). If the block exists, then I'm stumped, if it
doesn't, then you just have to grab one of the other title blocks and scale
it to fit the missing one. If all else fails, set the BLOCKIAMSTUPID
sysvar to 1 and see what happens.
I hope this solves your problem, if not, feel free to email me with more
parameters to work with, and we'll get it.

I suppose the programmer's version of RTFM would be RTF Examples. Many
of the sample programs have examples of ads_command usage.
For your problem, RTNONE would work. Of course you need to get rid of
all the extra arguments after the two end-points are defined.
Look at adscodes.h which lists all the codes. If you use ads_buildlist,
you should probably use RTDXF0 to terminate a list.

This is not at all true. While I will freely admit that VR is overhyped
at the moment, and too many people are spending too much time making sure
that you can see the reflections of the ducks in the pond on the windows,
VR (When did it become VR and stop being solid modeling?) is (or can be)
a very useful tool.
Just as you said, there are engineers and designers who have no clue how
to communicate their ideas, and for them, no tool will help. However,
for the same reasons that CAD is better then pens and a board, solid
modeling is better than 2D cad.
Better tools help the good engineers, designers and architects be more
productive. This has always been the case. Unfortunatly, the same tools
also allow the bad engineers, designers and architects produce greater
quantities of crap. Because this crap can now look very sexy, people
often forget to check on the details.
As you said, the most important piece of the puzzle is a mind capable of
creating a design, and successfully communicating it to others.

Subject: New AutoCAD Selection Method?!
From: "Daniel S. Shaffer"
Date: Wed, 27 Nov 1996 16:58:51 -0800
I am working in AutoCAD's ASE environment and am constantly linking
database records to AutoCAD entities.
My problem exists when trying to retrieve these records from entites
(specifically polygons) where the polygon boundaries are coincident.
The result of my selection of a polygon boundary could be the one I am
hoping to pick OR the colinear polygon entity. If a polygon is
"landlocked" or cannot be selected because other polygon boundaries are
coincident and/or "on top", I am up the creek...
So, has anyone been able to get around this..Using a point in polygon
selection method?
I hope I have made this clear enough to respond to...Thank You

As others have pointed out, the answer is "yes".
Perhaps more importantly, if the pirated software were used in some kind
of contract work it may void the contract since the State, as a matter of
public policy, does not support illegal actions in performance of an
otherwise legal contract.
In addition, if your company became the defendant in an "errors and
omissions" tort liability case, the use of illegal copies of software may
also void the insurance company's duty to pay your damamges bill should
you lose the lawsuit.
Please check it out with your company's attorney.

Subject: Layer Limitations
From: Shawn Cassidy
Date: Thu, 28 Nov 1996 18:30:25 -0500
To All,
Working with AutoCad r13c4 at work, I constantly reach the maximum
number of layers allowed. Once beyond this point, the program allows me
to add new layers, however all layers are displayed sorted by when they
were created not alphabetically. This problem makes getting around
large drawings with hundreds of components very, very difficult. All of
our work is done in groups all identified by assembly names.
Is there a way to get around this problem, if so please let me know at
the following address.

how do I link up to Access with my title block? I have other information

it with one thing then I can do it with another.
I wish to have all the data from all similar drawings in one data base.
Any help will be appreciated

I had this problem to start spontaneously. I still don't know why.
My workaround is to turn the plotter off and back on right before
sending the plot to it. (possibly a reset ?)

Of course, you can always wblock the lines after soldraw. Then, you'll
be able to dimension it.

Subject: contour pline vertices
From: skuhn@sprynet.com
Date: 28 Nov 1996 01:36:19 GMT
Need help in resolving a problem of a file becoming unmanageably large due to number of vertices on a pline.
The base file was a survey file that we are adding new contour lines. Once these plines are edited manually to smooth out
the curves, the pline creates a numerous amount of vertices. So much that when the line is highlighted, you really can't tell which
grip is on which line until you zoom in 10 times. This creates an astronomical file size of between 10 and 22 MB today of a file
that started at about 1 meg. Used some normal techniques to decrease the file size, such as purge, and have gone to tracing the
individual lines and erasing the old but this is frustrating and takes up to much time. A 20 MB file could take 15 min to load before
anything can even be done with it.
Running AcadR12 for DOS on P100, 1GB HD, and 64 MB ram.
Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: Re: force text inside (etc)
From: "Steve Wigginton"
Date: 28 Nov 1996 00:21:59 GMT
Your problem is due to dimension style naming. When you change a
dimensioning feature, then all dimensions with that style name will reflect
this change. If you wish to change a dimension feature and not affect other
dimensions on the drawing then create a new style name from a dimension
style closest to the appearance you want, change the feature such as force
text inside and save the new style. This is only necessary in R12 as R13
allows the user to override dimension style settings without affecting
dimensions of the same style name.

If you dont need associative dimensioning you can turn the dimaso
varible to off. Of course it will create no associative dimensioning
anymore but it will ask you for length and will keep much better
editable. I use it myself this way and it works fine.
