I'll bet that if you post your lisp requirements here, depending on
the the complexity, you might get'em for free or find some existing

Everyone has there own way of working so I won't go so far as to say dimensions
should *never* go in paperspace. Just the same, until I get a chance to try out
Morten's dimensioning utility, for my purposes, dimensions should be in model
space only so they can maintain true associativity with the model geometry.
Several problems can occur when dimensions are placed in paperspace without this
associativity. If the viewport is resized, the zoom magnification of the view
window is changed or if the view needs to be panned to accomodate changes in the
size of the model, your dimensions will be floating in space and will not be
panned or re-sized along with the model geometry. If you're doing AEC type work
where the drawing or model is represented in the viewport at something other
than full size, like a floor plan for instance, then you must use a dimension
scaling dimvar to re-calculate your dimensions to the proper value.
> If you dimension in model space, the dimensions are
>confined to the viewport that you create them in.
I think what you meant to say is that your dimensions are *not* confined to the
viewport in which you create them? correct?? If so, you're right, but there are
ways to handle that so they are.
Say you have a three view layout in paperspace of your drawing; top, front and
side views. All you need to do is create layers for your dimensions called
dimtop, dimside, and dimfront (or whatever best serves your needs). Now use the
vplayer command and in the top view, freeze the layers that contain the
dimensions for the front and side views. In the front view, freeze the layers
for top and side and in the side view, freeze the layers for top and front.
Suppose you want to have an iso view as well for a fourth viewport without any
dimensions at all. Just vplayer/freeze *all* the dimension layers.
Now if your change the zoom scale factor of any of the viewports, the dimensions
are still intact.
For simplicity's sake, let's presume your object is a cube. To dimesion the
front face, set a UCS using the 3 point option of the UCS command selecting the
lower left corner for the origin, the lower right corner for the point on the
positive x axis and the upper right corner for the point on the positive y axis.
Now your UCS xy plane is parallel and coincident with this front face. Your
dimensions will be "flush" with this face.
Set similar UCS's for the top and side using the same UCS 3 point procedure.
Your dimensions will be properly placed with respect to these faces as well.
> I could be (and usually am) wrong, but I think the dims are
>supposed to go in paper space.
I'm frequently wrong as well, but this is the way I've been using dimensions for
3D objects and it seems to work fairly well for me. But I must point out that
I'm not a mechanical designer, I work in the construction business - so if
you're doing mechanical engineering work your needs could be a lot different.

I'm not familiar with AA7.5 - your best bet would be to contact Eclipse Software
(you can access them through the McNeel web site I believe -

I found/find it very easy to learn.

The latest version does give you quite a bit of flexibility in door and window
styles but I don't believe you can use your own blocks. Facade's objects are all
mesh entities rather than block insertions. As such they are quite editable but
changing them with standard AutoCAD editing commands rather than using Facade's
editing tools will mess up the attached entity data. That's been my experience,
anyway.
>I like to have as much
>control as I can on projects.
You have all the control you need withing the program with the exception of
using your own pre-defined block insertions. Unless they've changed something in
a more recent version than I own.

Subject: 3D Scanner & 2D converted to 3D within AutoCAD...HELP!!
From: tim@iag.net (king)
Date: 4 Dec 1996 18:43:30 GMT
Wouldn't it be nice to place an object into a 3D kinda scanner and have AutoCAD
scan the object and import that 3D object into AutoCAD!! Is there such a device?
Also, I thought AutoCAD r13c4 could take a 2D drawing of an object drawn out
with all sides and take that 2D drawing and convert it to a 3D object. Can
AutoCAD do such a thing, or do you have to get a add on program?
I have several drawings that are drawn up in 2D with all sides. I need to create
3D drawing out of them.
Any suggestions?

Subject: ARX MSVC Newbie Problems
From: staehpj1@.jhuapl.edu (Peter Staehling)
Date: 4 Dec 1996 18:55:41 GMT
Hi,
I have been unable to get any ARX program to compile.
I am using MSVC++ 4.0. I followed the "Building ARX
with the MSVC++ 4.x IDE" listed in Readarx.hlp (from
the sdk) and used one of the sample programs.
I get "error C2065" "undefined identifier" errors for
all ARX classes. Do I need to add include statements
manually or should inserting the .lib's into the
project be enough?
I will try to recap what I did.
1. I selected "file", "new", "project workspace".
2. I picked "Dynamic-Link Library" and filled in a
directory name and clicked "create".
3. I selected "insert", "files into project", and
picked RXAPI.LIB, ACAD.LIB, and ACEDAPI.LIB.
4. I selected "build", "settings", to bring up the
"Project settings" dialog. I left "Win32 Debug"
and "Win32 Release" highlighted.
5. On the "C/C++" tab, I set the following:
  Code Generation
Use run-time library-> Single-threaded
  Preprocessor
Preprocessor Definitions-> I added "ACRXAPP,RADPACK"
Include Directories -> I added my \arx\inc directory
5. On the "link" tab, I set the following:
  General
Output File Name -> filename.arx
Output Base Address -> 0x1c000000
Entry-Point Symbol -> DllEntryPoint@12
6. I clicked the OK button.
7. I added one of the .cpp sample files to the project.
8. I tried to compile.
The code is as follows:
******************************************************
void
initApp()
{
    acedRegCmds->addCommand("ASDK_DICTIONARY_COMMANDS",
        "ASDK_CREATE", "CREATE", ACRX_CMD_MODAL,

Only Doom and Quake.
But for me thats VR software too, though we dont use headsets.

Okay. In VR you see completely different things than in the drawing and in
sample renderings. You feel time and space, a guest will get lost in a big
building, therefore you have to guide him. (as in reality). you have to
create paths with colors and lights and room heights.
You feel the physical distance in a long hallway and in a staircase, it
simply needs that much time to walk along.
You start becoming very theatrically with lights and paths. (at least me)
As long as you dont expect too much reality its a great tool.
BTW: We tried the same walktroughs as on the PC with Quake on the SGI Onyx
with Performer too and this was very disappointing.
Hardware its not all in the VR field. You really need good software.
But my favourite is now the cave (one is fix installed in Linz at the new
ars electronica centre). This is it!

I am trying to write a lisp routine that will make all our standard
layers and linetypes. I got the layer part done, but when it comes to
loading the linetypes, i'm stuck. My problem is when the routine gets
to the point where the linetype may already be loaded and I need to
keep hitting "Y" or enter. What do I do?????
Here is what I have so far:
(defun c:lm ()
(setq lay (getvar "clayer"))
(command "linetype" "load" "*" "acad" "")
)
This statement I got and tried but it didn't work:
;(while (/=0 (logand 3 (getvar "cmdactive")))(command ""))
Here is another that didn't work:
(while (= (getvar "cmdactive") 1)(command "y"))
Any help would be appreciated.

I would be interested in any responses to this thread. I am trying to find an r13c4 w95 solids
editor (that will stretch and resize solids and regions) that will work with autocad. I have found a
few packages but they all create entities that cannot be read easily by autocad and so they make
the construction of 3d from 2d and any subsequent projection of 2d from 3d very difficult. I
really don't care if it is simple as long as it is cheap/ free.

Yeah, they're available (kinda pricy) there are also 3D digitizers

It depends on the complextiy of the object but for fairly simple stuff
you can rotate and align the 2D views so they are in place in 3D
space. Then extrude each view to its proper depth, then intersect the
resulting solids. Like I said it doesn't work for everthing, just
fairly simple profiles but it can give you a good start.
If this doesn't make sense or you'd like a more detailed explanation
let me know and I'd be happy to provide a drawing or picture
describing the process.

Subject: Ghost Images in tiled viewports R13c4a, ANY IDEAS??
From: beardude@ix.netcom.com (hardy harr)
Date: Wed, 04 Dec 1996 20:57:32 GMT
I am running acad R13c4a on a pentium 166 based pc with NT,
I have a Matrox Millenium video card with 4 meg wram.
the problem i have is that when i use tiled viewports, some drawings
will create ghost images when i zoom around, the only way to get rid
of these images is to do a regen in each individual viewport.
is this a video card problem or a autocad glitch.
appreciate any imput on this problem.

The answer to your question is YES, there is such a thing as a 3D
laser scanner that will scan objects in 3D space. Unfortunatly this is
an expensive process that not many people have access too.
A more practical method is to us a 3D digitizing wand. this is a unit
that lets you digitize 3D points on any object. these units run from
$2,000 and up.
As for autocad making 3D out of 2D, not bloody likely.
there is a program however called Make-It 3D that is supposed to do
that very thing. I have not personaly seen this work nor do i know
anyone who has used it.
What acad will do, is extrude a 2D outline that will create a 3D
solid. This is great for none complicated objects. This is also how i
begin almost all of my models, by finding the best outline to extrude
and then adding or subtracting from it.
hope this helps

Subject: Hercules Vid problems and Win 95/Acad 12
From: Brian Schonecker
Date: Wed, 04 Dec 1996 15:39:29 -0500
I'm using Acad 12 under Win 95 with a Hercules
Stingray VLB video card at 1024 x 768 (both ACAD
and Win95).
When I first installed win95, acad was already
working fine under VGA. I then changed the 95 vid
to 1024 x 768 and then the acad vid to the same
with the VESA driver that comes w/ acad.
Everything worked fine....until now.
I'm starting acad and it runs but the cross hairs
'bleed' onto the screen. That is - the cross hairs
don't erase themselves from the 'previous'
position making acad unusable.
Any suggestion?

Come on. Do you really think that?
In lisp it's possible to automatically beautify your code and the good
editors do it. Do you have such a feature in any C IDE?
My LISP IDE is by far superior to Borland C or MSVC.
With Lisp you got
functions to work on abstract data types (lists). In C you're struck with
pointers and mallocing (even strings), not superior in my eyes.
Okay C++ has some classes, but there's no standard (and the STL has only
templates), not to speak about garbage collection.
And AutoLISP has no vectors, arrays, classes and macros. Anyway.
Regarding the brackets I have to say that the syntax of lisp is by far
more understandable than the C syntax. Ever read the C BNC? Ever wrote a C
parser? In lisp there're just atoms and lists.
And you can check your code syntax within the editor. In C you have to wait
for the compiler warnings. With the lisp compiler I can do the same too, but
I can ever run the functions interactively. No need for a debugger most of
the time. (and a simple debugger is written in lisp in 50 lines: xlisp ->
stepper.lsp)
Okay, recursion is not everyones thing. For the average C programmer even a
horror.
I want to solve a problem and not playing with bytes and nodes as in C.
Sometimes I have to be religious, sorry. Same war as in the comp.lang.lisp
group every day.

Not unusable. I ran R12/WIN on a 386DX20 for almost 2 years before
the computer failed. It kept me in business, and my clients were
getting their drawings faster and cheaper than they were getting them
from people using supposed "state of the art" machines.
I will say however that with the cost of computers as low as they are
today, it would be foolish not to upgrade the computer.

This is straightforward. You need to make sure that the directory
where BASE.DCL is stores is on the ACAD search path. The drfault
directory is the SUPPORT directory. When AutoCAD installs, it is not
there.

Well, you have AutoCAD configured to use a real mode ADI driver. This
is a TSR which is loaded before AutoCAD, and hooks interupt vector
07A. On your system, this TSR has not been loaded, and hence the
message. You need to load the driver into memory first.

database before we ran the gen. links command?? Is there a limit ADE can
create?? Because no matter what drawing or database we are in it will still
only create about 200 records??
Anyone else having this problem??
We are using DB3 environment??
Is it our database itself??
Because in AutoCAD it says 2300 links exist.?? Please help!!

Looks like you need WEED from the Vector package by Jerry Workman.
Spatial Explorer DICE creates such funny 3D Polys.
Its available for DOS/WIN R12/R13 at all major shareware sites.
(plus here: http://xarch.tu-graz.ac.at/progs/)
But that's only a 2D weed, it checks the 2d projection of the curve and
erases all unneeded points. The space angles between vectors is not checked,
but you wont need that.
My 3DWEED is not finished yet. (Still garbles some vtx's)

Nobody have suggested this. In my opinion it's perfectly valid practice
to keep each contractor's files in their directory (under some PROJECT
directory). It's perfectly valid to gather'em with XREFs too. Then if
those contractor's files are using XREFs we have the problem I'd described.
If I would prepare plotting sheet file as paperspace viewport DWG Xrefing
all the others down the tree -- this problem would arose too.
Just to your notice: our primary working field is road design, so we
have to work with all this stuff from surveyours, sewege and water engineers
etc... This pattern of work is just a reflection of real life situation,
nothing artificial. I simply want the XREFed file's directory to be
considered too, I DON'T WANT TO JIGGLE MY FILES COPYING THEM ALL AROUND.

Great idea! I'm really impressed. As for each concept
truly reflecting the reality this contains more hidden
benefits in it. We can also go further and not only speak of
colors/plotting. Texts or blocks parts of certain objects
could automatically scale themselves (like dimentions
