Subject: Hardware Lock

I am a high school student, and my teacher is having trouble with his
cd-rom drive. It will not run through the Autodesk Autocad hardware lock,
and the hardware lock needs to be removed for it to operate correctly.
Although, if the hardware lock is removed, Autocad will not run. The
version of Autocad is release 13, the external cdrom needs to be installed
to install release 13a of Autocad, wich uis on a CD. If you can help me,

Nagel,
Well, good thing you not in Ontario, Canada, or any other province for
that matter.
Within Canada, it is a provincial and federal offence to use the term
'engineer' in your job title unless you are a licenced practioner.
Canada passed the Professional Engineers Act in 1990, and along with the
Ritual Calling of an Engineer, (if you notice a Canadian engineer with a
battered Iron ring on their working hand...) the job title, whether
working for a company, or on your own private business card will not
allow you or your company to use those terms.
As well, being a self-governing, self regulated (within provincial
boundaries), there are also different levels of 'Service' or licences
that can be obtained. These range from a Temp Licence, to a "Consulting
Engineer" title.
There is a rather lengthy, formal process to be followed to obtain a
licence (which I'm currently doing) and be able to practice within
Canada as a Professional Engineer.
With this extra work, comes extra responsibility. All practicing
Engineers have special Certificates and Liability insurance either at
the personal level, or at the employer-company level.
Hence, not only can a skilled person who may do a similiar job in
Canada NOT use an Engineering title, but those who do need special
Licences to practice.

Hi Tony,
Unfortunatly I can't help you with this problem but would like to offer
the following;
There is an old saying that goes something like "penny wise, pound
foolish". People will try to save money by purchasing inexpensive tools
to do a job. The time spent trying to develop "work arounds" will
quickly offset money saved on the initial purchase. It would be
very benificial to your employer and you if you had a full blown version
of AutoCAD. LISP is probably the most powerful feature of AutoCAD since
it will allow you to create tools that do not already exist of
restructure existing ones.

R12 will run on a PowerMac if you use PowerFPU software. It's still not as
fast as on a PC, but it works fine for smaller dwgs. You could install a
Pentium card on a PowerMac as I did. Then you can run Autocad R13 on Windows95.

You would probably be better of not using DDINSERT (the
dialog box version of the INSERT command), and instead,
create a menu (pull-down, cursor, or toolbar) with your
blocks on it, in which you can easily eliminate superfluous
prompts.

Doing things like this is possible with AutoCAD, but not
with LT. It seems like you should consider upgrading,
especially if you have the need to do specialized things
like this frequently.

I think the LUPREC system varaible controlled it in R12, but not in
R13. The original post didn't say what version of ACAD they were
using.
In R13 you can use the DIMOVERRIDE command, the variable you want to
override is DEC (btw, this seems silly because the variable you want
to override is DIMDEC but the command puts the DIM in front for you).
So at the command prompt type DIMOVERRIDE , type DEC as the variable
to override, press return a the next prompt, the select the dimensions
to override.

I don't know if this will work in LT, but if you can modify your menus like
you can in regular ACAD, try inserting something like this:
[Block insert]^c^cinsert;[blockname_goes_here];\;;;
into one of your Popdown menus. The "\" allows you to pick your insert
point, then the rest of the command is finished out for you. Be very
careful with the placement of the semicolons, make certain you use no
spaces. The [Block insert] part you can name anything you like, it's the
commands afterwards that do everything.
I have no idea if this will work in LT, but hope it does.
