Hi Steve,
Your point about dual uses is is quite true, I really didn't think about that.
Although to me, the numbers displayed on the computer screen are secondary to the
dimensions on a drawing. I purchased AutoCAD as a drafting tool, not a visual aid.

As far back as I can remember, AutoCAD has displayed dimensions with different
decimal places even though LUPREC was constant. The information needed to assign
the number of decimal places is already stored with the dimension. Adding theis
new variable did not cure the problem. I'll leave it at that.

Yes. Do one the following.
Press ctrl-p, setting print capture on.
Give the command layer/?/*/[Enter]
Wait for the printout.
Press ctrl-p again to turn capture off.
In windows you can copy the same thing from your Autocad text window.
Select the text (mouse pointer/shift).
Press ctrl-c to copy the text to the clipboard.
Run any text editor.
Press ctrl-v to copy from the clipboard.
Save and/or print the file.

John,
Here in Europe the dealer where you bought AM-WorkFlow should be able to
answer your technical questions and/or solve your problems. If you're
interested I can ask around if there are some WorkFlow trainings given in
the Netherlands or Belgium in the upcoming months. Otherwise, if you have
difficulties (also difficulties concerning your dealer) you can mail me (of
course only in extreme emergencies :-) ).
Also take a look at our web site ! :-)

Hi Lu,
I tend to agree, the "backwards compatibility" of commands didn't seem
to be that great a priority in R13. There are several thing that you
could do in R12 that you either can't do or must do differently in
R13. There is another thread going on here regarding drawing tangent
circles and it appears that tangent points are determined differently
than in R12. The THICKNESS property, while still working the way it
used to, does not work on new R13 objects (like splines, ellipses,
mtext, etc..). And so it goes....

Hi Evan,
If I read you right, and if the cylinder is oriented so that the tip is at
a Quadrant of the cylinder, then the Quadrant Osnap should work. The UCS

So I have a drawing, I'am calling a xref, defines a block with a window,

The problem is that the XRef don't show up in the new drawing

This produces PCL, which the DeskJet 820 Cse does not understand.

No 3-digit DeskJet model understands HP-GL/2 (or HP-GL). The DeskJet

The 820 Cse is a Windows only printer. I would be amazed if AutoCAD DOS
can print to it. You should read Bob Niland's mini-FAQ about the printer,
which is often posted in comp.sys.printers.

You can bring WMF files into AutoCAD by using the WMFIN command. After
you explode them, you can edit them, but the results will probably not
be what you expect. Everything in the WMF file will be converted to
polylines made up of straight line segments, which is probably not
what you are looking for.
I don't know mch about how WMF files are stored but to me it seems
that the big difference is that AutoCAD is completely vector based,
while WMF files are a somewhat glorified raster file containing both
raster data and some type of vector data.
What type of drawings are you trying to create anyway?

Does anyone know of a quick and easy way to convert 3D wireframes to 2D? I
use the "project" command to flatten the object into the XY plane. Then I
have to laboriously get rid of unwanted lines, arcs, etc. For instance, if
a simple box wire frame is projected to 2D, I end up with a 2D rectangle
that has 2 sets of lines on each side.

Hi Christian,
Insert the drawing as a XREF first;
The function, P2270dwg, should do what you are asking. I use this program to
insert detail drawings, with xref'ed borders, into a layout drawing for editing.

Hi Jim,
In case you havn't tried the following;
1. Check BIOS settings, (DEL) on reboot. There are so many variations in CMOS setup
software I can't suggest what to look for. Look at all the settings.
2. Did someone add a TSR that is conflicting with the COM port? Use a terminal program
to check the COM port.
Just some thoughts,

Subject: Is there any case for *NOT* using Paper Space?
From: wmill@execpc.com (Tony T)
Date: Tue, 10 Dec 1996 21:48:30 GMT
Hi all,
Just curious;
Is there anyone out there who knows the ins and outs of Paper space,
yet chooses to work exclusively in Model Space?
The reason I ask is I have seen quite a few opponents of PS, and I
was curious if any can articulate what the advantages/disadvantages
would be in choosing NOT to use PS; i.e. set plot at other than 1:1
(ugh), changing DIMLFAC (double ugh), scaling entities up and down (!)
and the like.
I am fairly familiar with MS/PS, and I can see its potential and
flexibility, although it _does_ get to be tedious; sometimes I wonder
if the benefits may not be outweighed by the added hassle.
Guess I am just looking for as much diversity as possible...

Has anyone experienced being thrown out to either the Win95 or WinNT
4.0 Desktop from ACADr13c4 - FOR NO APPARENT REASON?
I have experience this situation on 3 separate machines at
various times and cannot duplicate the problem. It usually
happens after I open a saved drawing. We have IBM
compatible PCs with at least 64 meg of Ram and Pentium
166 and Pentium Pro 200 Mhz Machines. Each machine
has a minimum of 2 Gig of free space..Any help would

From: Harald Hjelle

Without beeing to bombastic I will say that this is a well known problem
that is not much to do about.
It's right that "Visretain" will do something about it, but the problem
is that you don't want to descard the changes you do with freezing and
thawing layers in your "main" drawing (2.dwg). This means that reload
will not change anything, because all the settings in the main-drawing are
supposed to be constant (with visretain on).
Am I wrong?
So, I think you have to change the colour on the layer in the
"main-drawing".
If the first drawing is attached to many drawings, you could run
a script on all of them to change the colour.
The script would look something like this
(I dont't have my Autocad to test it at the moment but if you are
not familiar with script, please contact me:
Layer
Change
*badlayer
c
4
Then you can download the lisp routine DDSCRIPT and run run the script
on all the drawings this problem occures. Of course you could also invoke
some uther features in your script-file for thawing and freezing, etc,
or what about detach files that are not anymore in use.
(This has been a problem on the R13c3) .

Subject: AutoCAD 13 & pentium Pro - Suggested video cards????????
From: andy@arch.usyd.edu.au (Andrew Winter)
Date: Wed, 11 Dec 1996 09:42:04 +1000
The Faculty of Architecture at the University of Sydney is about to change
from using AutoCAD 13 on our Solaris workstations to a new lab of Pentium
Pro machines. We will also install DRC Architect
The Pentium Pros will be equipped with 64MB RAM and running Windows NT 4.0
workstation.
Currently the preferred supplier is Dell, although Gateway and Compaq
currently are in the running.
All three suppliers are offering three seperate video cards;
Number Nine Imagine II (I have not received and answer as to whether it is
the II or the IIe card)
Matrox Millennium
STB Virge VX
We are a predominantly Macintosh and Solaris site, so have little
experience with PC video cards. Can anyone who is running such cards with
AutoCAD 13 and/or DRC Architect offer some advice as to
problems/incompatibilities/quirks they have experienced using these cards.
Please respond via email (andy@arch.su.edu.au)

Here's a lisp routine that demonstrates the problem. The routine draws
a 2" square centered at 0,0, and then a 2"dia circle also centered at
0,0. All is fine so far, in the area between the circle and square
there are 4 "triangular" areas defined, one in each corner.
One should be able to create a circle inside the corner area that is
tangent to the large circle and tangent to the two adjacent sides of
the square using the 3P circle and using the TAN object snap on each
point (pt1, pt2, and pt3), however this is not the circle you get.
The lisp routine draws two circles. The red circle is drawn using the
3P circle and selecting tangent points pt1, pt2, and pt3. The green
circle is drawn by constructing the tangent line , then using the 3P
circle and selecting the tangent points pt4, pt5 , and pt6.
The green circle is correct and what I would expect. The red circle is
also technically correct, but is not the circle closet to the selected
points.
What would be really neat would be for AutoCAD to allow you to drag
your cursor around and have a ghost image of the different circles
appear. Then when you see the one you want, click to finish the
command.
Anyway, I don't know how many people have come across this. Doesn't
seem to affect most people so Autodesk may or may not address it. BTW
this was done on R13c4, I haven't tried it on earlier or later
versions.

I also got the WHIPTK05.DLL fatal error, so removed that dll along with
WHIP05.OCX and went back to the web site that was supposed to

on KERNEL32.DLL. So I went back again and now it fatals on WHIPTK05.DLL.
Go figure. Does any one have a clue?

Subject: Conversion from Microstation to AutoCAD
From: Stuart Palmer
Date: Wed, 11 Dec 1996 10:41:36 +1000
Dear all,
How's things?
We are using Microstation Vn 5 and need to convert .DGN drawings
to AutoCAD .DWG format.
When we carry out this process, the Microstation shapes in complex
shapes are converted to 3D faces in AutoCAD, and in the process
lose their line styles - ie. they appear as solid lines in AutoCAD,
even though they were dashed lines in Microstation.
Note that if the properties of the converted 3D faces are examined
in AutoCAD, it does indicate a 3D face with dashed lines, but there
appears no way to get them to show as dashed lined in AutoCAD.
Can anyone offer a solution to this problem?
Thanks in advance.

How many C++ programers does it take to change a lightbulb?
You're still thinking procedurally. A properly designed
light bulb object would inherit a change method from a
generic light bulb class, so all you'd have to do is send a
light bulb change message!

I don't think you can have a lisp function as an expression within the
(command) function. You can try instead
(command "arc" point1 "e" point2 "d" pause)
which simply pauses the lisp routine for user input.

Subject: Re: ACAD 3D Screw Threads?????
From: "Lee Harding"
Date: 11 Dec 1996 00:59:03 GMT
If you are using the Mechanical Desktop, the following will work. In pure
AutoCAD, you can only approximate the 3D variations of threads.
I've put together a .dwg that steps through the process of creating a very
basic drill bit. I'll email the file to anyone (by request) that is
interested in creating this type of geometry.
The basic steps involved are as follows:
1. Create a multi-segment, linear PLINE. The PLINE should have at least
four segments per 360 degrees of rotation of the desired helix. For
example, to create a helix with one turn over a length of four inches, I
would use a pline defined as:
_.pline 0,0 1,0 2,0 3,0 4,0
2. Create an augmented line from the PLINE using the _.ameditaug command.
_.ameditaug _add
3. Before exiting the command, use the _twist option to specify the twist
for the augmented line. Notice that the normal vectors for the augmented
line are now twisted.
_twist 360 _all 0,0
4. Exit _.ameditaug and sketch the crossection of the helix that you
desire. Usually the section will be sketched immeadiately above one end of
the
_.pline -.5,2 -.5,1 .5,1 .5,2
5. Use the _.amsweepsf to sweep the section along the augmented line.
Select the section as the wire and the augmented line as the rail.
_.amsweepsf _last 0,0
6. Since the above example uses a section that is not continuous, three
separate surfaces will be created. It the PLINE used for the section have
been filleted before amsweepsf (thus making it continuous) one one surface
would have been created. To join the three surfaces together, use
_.amjoinsf
_.amjoinsf _fence 0,0 5,5
Viola!
