I have a father that wants an electrical engineering cad program (for win 3.1 or dos) for xmas. I know a lot about music and sound software but I don't have the faintest idea of what is out there in the realm of cad. I have only $140 to spend and need something that will let him draw diagrams of circuit boards and such. It doesn't have to be fancy, it just has to have symbols for capacitors and resistors etc. I have looked around at computer software stores and just received blank looks from the workers (go figure). If anyone can e-mail me a recomendation for an appropriate cad it will be much appreciated. If you also have information on how to contact the company to order the software that will be doubly appreciated. Thanx in advance. rbarnes@postbox.acs.ohio-state.eduReturn to Top

I know there are some CAD packages available that are fairly inexpensive. Try Simtel or Walnut Creek (sorry don't know their URL's-try Yahoo) they may have something you can download and try out. Might even have exactly what you are looking for. Commercial CAD programs are usually pretty general and more than likely won't include what you are looking for, but shareware tends to be more specialized-and cheaper. There aren't many commercial CAD programs available in your price range and those that are are pretty lame. Scott DragerReturn to Top

Just a short vote for what I think is a terrific commercial product in this price range: EasyCad (Evolution Computing, Tempe, AZ). It's strictly 2D and uses a proprietary file format (.ECW), but can also read and write .DXF. Colleagues of mine and I use it for lots of electronic and mechanical design drawings. There are several parts libraries for various disciplines. BTW, if anyone is interested in purchasing our libraries, say around $50 each (schematic and mechanical) please email me. With or without our libraries, we believe EasyCad is a terrific product. Since it runs under Windows 3.1/95, any output device with a Windows driver works with it. Andy sez, "Check it out!" Allen, First off, have you heard of Part Spec™ from Autodesk? It is a library of mechanical components on a CD ROM shipped with the Desktop. You should have gotten a copy in the box. To get to the meat of your question, how you incorporate 2D data in your 3D design is completely up to you. Three possibilities are: 1. Use the 2D data to generate 3D models that can be used in the design. This is expensive, but may be worth the cost is some circumstances (e.g. if you need mass props, surface information, etc.) 2. Use the 2D data in model space as reference geometry for creating your designs. This can be very helpful for assembly layout where precise geometry is required, but solid model data is not. 3. Use the 2D data as parametric annotations in paperspace. This is usually the most valuable approach. For example, instead of having a solid model of a standard bolt in a flange assembly, just attach the bolt to the view of the assembly as an annotation. What is a good autocad program I could use to accurately draw on a computer what we mapped in the field? Obviously, I need to keep things to scale and be able to measure everything as I draw it on the screen. I am currently using draft choice for windows, but it is not as user friendly as I would like. There will be two options: "Save Text Objects As Text" and "Save Text Objects As Curves". Check radio button "...As Text". Then import the wmf by AutoCAD and EXPLODE newly created image block. Now all texts from Corel Draw are text primitives in AutoCAD. They are drawn using current text STYLE, though they are represented as separate letters, not as phrases. The second way: create your text as "Paragraph(s) Text" in Corel Draw, then export it as plain text(s) (separatly from other objects). Export other objects as DXF using the option "Save Selected Objects Only". First import your DXF by AutoCAD, then import text(s) with support utility ASCTEXT.LSP. Of course you must now edit text layout manually, but it is easier than retype everything. The other problem with converting Corel Draw -> AutoCAD is that either DXF or WMF filters approximate curves as hundreds of short vectors. I have the converter, that can approximate Corel Draw drawings with arcs and vectors and write DXFs. The difference in DXF-file length between standard Corel filter and the converter is 5 to 10 times. If you are interested, please send me email. I suspect that any architect that has had the honor and privilidge to call him/herself one for 40 years can hardly be accused of not having considered the perspective of the owner, his/her client that does, after all pay the bill in the end. If you had any insight whatsoever into the design process, Mr. Pugh, you would realize that long term life cycle costing is one of the most important considerations a good architect uses in the choice of materials and systems in the buildings they do. > I've read that the life cycle costs of a building are quite >high compared to the initial building cost. So you've read a few articles in some trade magazines or reports from ... we have no idea, and now the first cost of a building is insignificant in comparison to the overall cost of maintaining a facility! Life cycle costs are ongoing. Reduction in their cost doesn't imply they are eliminated. Does any of your research into this subject offer any substantive figures for where the costs of facilities management are incurred? Now, I should differentiate the difference I make between facilities management as it pertains to leasing and property management and the management of the physical plant. We do a moderate amount of work in the health care market, hospitals and such. Every one of these facilities maintains a staff of operating engineers, electricians and such just to keep the place operating. What percentage of the maintenance costs are for labor and what percentage is for materials? And how would a CAD based as-built reduce either of them to the extent being offered? > Perhaps there might be some truth in the fluff, after all. Perhaps you should spend some time wearing a tool belt or preparing bid documents and answering contractor's questions. Leaving any savings potential in the overall cost of initial construction aside, I defy anyone to illustrate a savings to the extent that's been claimed in facility management merely due to the implementation of facilities management documents in CAD format. The only way that can happen is a significant improvement in the reliability and long term durability of building systems. I strongly suspect that Mr. Quinci's remark was directed primarily at the overall cost of preparation of design/construction documents. As anyone with any amount of experience in the industry should know, this process accounts for a major portion of the designer's time and effort. Given a tool that will make the preparation of these documents all the more automated, accurate and clear, then savings of the magnitude being bandied about could be realistic. But let's take different approach to the whole concept of "automated" design. Are we really eager to accept a situation where the architect's subjective judgment and artistic skill is to be suplanted with an automated decision making process? Are we asking for some kind of "rules based" design criteria that overrides otherwise crucial aspects of harmony, rythm and composition? >+-------+ Lansing Pugh Associates, Authorized AutoCAD Dealer The sig speaks for itself. There is a known problem ( i think ) when using the '\' character in the button menu for a digitizer using the wintab drivers. Instead of returning the current cursor coordinates, AutoCAD gets an extreme at the top right of the screen. I remember seeing some discussion about it in this group but I don't remember what the outcome was. Was it judged to be an AutoCAD problem, a windows problem, or the driver? Also, was a workaround ever found? thanks, -MattReturn to Top
Hi people, I need to measure the volume of a "piece" which is limited in part by a 3d Mesh. Is it possible to do that in Autocad R.13? If not, which software should i use?Return to Top
Can't wait for AutoDesk slurping Vibrant Inc. Then they could get rid of those disturbing Microstation and CadKey drivers... --- Reini Urban, TU Graz, Architecture & X-RAYReturn to Tophttp://xarch.tu-graz.ac.at/autocad/ Attention! Matt, Boy do I feel for you. We have had the same problem here. After contacting both my vendor (not an easy task) and CalComp (harder, indeed) it has been determined that there is an inherent problem w/ the way windows iterprets the Wintab command (or something like that). The bad news is that there will be no fix at least until r14. The worse news is that it appears that no one is commited to fixing the problem. Everyone is pushing 'heads-up' toolbars and other "mouse-enabled" operations over digitizers. When will they wake up and smell the coffee and realize that the real value of a digitizer in todays windows world is in the buttons, not the board commands. Maybe someone will market a decent 16 button mouse... Enough of the soapbox. It has been rumored that this functionality can be restored by writing an ARX program to do what AutoCAD is supposed to do (according to its documentation) in the first place. One of my co-workers has been discussing this possibility with a free-lance developer, but nothing has come out of it yet. Sorry to have to be the bearer of bad news, but maybe if enough people bitch to autodesk, something will get done about it. I'm wondering if there is a "3D surf" like program that i can use to produce simple swept curves in 3 space. I've tried this idea in Autocad Designer and it wont work. I realize that 3D-surf is the key, but I don't need all of its bells a whistles. My main idea is to find a program for and SGI, Sun, or Linux box that will allow me to define a 3d spline curve and sweep a profile of another curve along its path. Any ideas? Hey all, I created some custom menu buttons in Acad, and they looked just peachy. Only thing is, when I restarted Acad, they were blank; they still work correctly, but there is no picture on them. Anyone know what gives here? Tony AutocadLT 95 BTW> ******************************** "Never laugh at live dragons..." J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit *********************************Return to Top

The extended entity data (EED) in ADE 1.0 has been replaced by Object Data in ADE 2.0. ADE 2.0 has conversion routines that will convert ADE 1.0 EED to object data. The AutoLISP API for ADE 2.0 has functions that allow the user to attach and detach object data records to entities like you could in ADE 1.0. Tom Brownell@CADPReturn to Top
