Hi there... I've got a problem, and I'm hoping that someone here may be able to help. Here's the situation... - A mesh was created in Autocad (sorry- don't know the version- I believe it was 12) - AME (which, I understand, means "Automatic Modeling Extension" or something like that) was used during the design - Saved in acad as a .dxf file - I don't work in Autocad myself, so I don't know what parameters were used in saving it as .dxf - I try to import it into 3dStudio r3, r4 and 3dMax, and no matter what I try (import as layers, colors, etc. etc.) I don't get a full mesh - The mesh that I do get is the correct shape, but is missing a lot of faces. Eg. a flat surface, missing a triangular block section - From what I understand, using AME in the design process is what screwed things up. True? Any help would be much appreciated. Sorry if I couldn't supply you with more info- I am merely an animator ;) Thanks in advance, alanReturn to Top

Problem : Cannot load v.large drawings into ACAD13 while running NT4 WS Same files can be loaded into ACAD12 from Wfwg311 or Win95 using (P90,32Mb). Computer Spec: NT4 WS, P166 64Mb RAM , 60M swap file The drawing is a survey drawing of 19M incl xrefs of 10M & 8M. In ACAD13, the drawing loads to 98% then stops. ACAD12 eventually loads drawing (3 to 4 times as long compared to using Wfwg). Once loaded there doesnt appear to be a problem. We are about to embark upon a project where there will be several drawings of this size and a very tight deadline. Any help or hints will be tried as we are getting desperate..... ACAD+Softdesk is a sick bag of cheese compared to other architectural products I've seen. Bentley's uSTN+Triforma is far superior. Further, neither those two platforms hold half a candle to architecture-specific packages like Arris. The problem I have with AutoCAD is in how little work Autodesk has done to really improve ACAD, and how much Adesk has tried to paper over it's cascade of mistakes with out actually solving problems. AutoCAD is still depressingly slow, R13 is *still* pretty buggy for something that's been updated ten times, Autodesk wants their customers to go through the pain and humiliation of switching operating systems just so Autodesk can save some development money, etc, etc, etc... I know that Autodesk has capable employees. Autodesk has a product that could really fly with the right direction. Unfortunately, Autodesk also has a boardroom full of folks who seem to think that they are moving things in the right direction just because they have more installed seats than everybody else. IBM thought that, too. So did Apple. And GM. As did Douglas, about thirty years ago...... MSTReturn to Top

The end result is the same, but as far as I understand it in ADE you are not actually opening two drawings at the same time. You are copying information from multiple drawing files into a new (or existing) drawing and can then write back any changes to the source drawings. You still have only one drawing file open at a time. I think this is slightly different from what Wayne was originally asking, which I took to mean having two drawing displayed in separate windows under a single session of AutoCAD. But you're right...this is picky. -Jim Fitzgerald

I call upon the collective intelligence of this newsgroup to offer some advice on purging in AutoCAD R13. Can I purge without having to type "Y" and "enter" every time? A couple of times is OK, but typing it 100, 200, or even 500 times stinks. If I can't get it to automatically purge everything, can I at least set the default at "Y" instead of "N", so I can just hit "enter" instead of "Y" and then "enter"? Any help would be appreciated! I work for a small company that designs shelving and storage systems for various commercial needs. I am an entry level employee who has found myself in a position that seems to boggle the minds of some very experienced AutoCad users. I am alone in this company, the people who I work for and with are all sales-people who can offer no help. They only demand perfection. Enough of my whimpering.... My needs: 1- Software and system requirments to make it possible to scan pictures into AutoCad and also allow me to edit the scanned pictures. (We have an HP 4c scanner but when I scan pictures into the drawing the plotter does not recognize them and I am unable to manipulate objects within the scanned picture.) 2- Software and system requirments to allow me to plot a drawing with a quality render as well as wire frame views on one sheet. Example: one sheet of paper - elevation view, plan view and a rendered view all within one border. Sounds strange but we are trying to make our drawings appeal to customers who have a hard time visualizing pictures that are not realistic. I also need to be able to place the rendered picture anywhere on my drawing and rotate it as needed. So far I have had a very hard time finding any help. These seem to be uncommon tasks. We are willing to pay a resonble fee to a qualified person who can set me on the right path. Please respond to storagecad@aol.comReturn to Top

The problem is that it apparently spends more time > swapping out to the disk than it allows drawing time. You really need a disk caching program, at least smartdrv or equivalent in DOS, or a large permanent swap file if running Windows (2 to 3 times the physical RAM in size). More RAM is good too, but r12 performance really doesn't improve much after memory is increased to 24MB or so. Also, within AutoCAD type CONFIG then choose option 7 Configure operating parameters. Next, change Placement of temporary files from to C:\ so that you are not transferring data on the network that could be stored locally. Lastly, if you can load the AutoCAD software itself on the local hard drive, as opposed to running it from the server, you will increase performance, especially on a congested network. Search for ***TOOLBARS. Then look for the toolbar's name that contains your new buttons, ie. **SPECIAL. Then check each button's icon, ie. ID__1 [_Button("Tile P", ICON5784.bmp, ICON_24_BLANK)] ^^^^^^^^^^^ and make sure that file is in LT's directory. I've noticed that LT tries to assign this ICONnnnnn.BMP format even though you called it something else. Break out Paintbrush or QuickView and look at all the bmp file in LT's dir. or change the name back to what you called it. Then put the aclt.mnc and aclt.mnr file in a safe place (another directory), re-open LT and make sure it recompiles those two files before deleting the old ones.
