Subject: Line Weights and scales - Linewgt.xls (0/1)
From: wmill@execpc.com (Tony T)
Date: Wed, 18 Dec 1996 19:57:16 GMT
Keith,
I am attaching an Excel file to this message; let me know if your mail
reader has a hard time with it, I will resend it in another format. It
contains our standard line colors, weights and thicknesses.
I have a few comments about the Giftco drawings, not that they need to
be changed, but for future reference:
1) Shelf line type should be line type 5, scale 2, width 0 (in 1/2"
scale").
Giftco has LT 6, Width .75
2) Doors need swing line on them; line type 1, scale 3 in 1/2" scale.
	Giftco has LT 6
3) Lose interior line types that are different weights.
They all blur together on the blueline anyway, so its really not worth
the extra effort.
4) Sections at 2" scale are not acceptable. 1 1/2" minimum. (3" ok if
it will fit)
5) There are still bits and pieces of dimension lines that need to be
erased.
6) Page numbers should be A0#.DW2, not A-#.dw2
Also, I know you are often rushed, but is it possible to always send a
disk with the drawings? In the end, I will have to manipulate them,
and although I have been lucky lately in getting a hold of them right
away, I can just imagine a time when I am pressured to release
something only to find that we received hard copies but no drawing
files, and it would just happen to be the week you are out of town (!)

Subject: Stack check error
From: Chris Michalski
Date: Wed, 18 Dec 1996 21:56:13 GMT
Dear sirs:
I am running AutoCAD R13 on a Dell pentium. The boot displays that
there are 32 stacks of something like 1200. But on certain machines, (I
am in a University of Toledo computer lab) hiding causes a stack check
error. Is there any way to avoid this? I don't see how it could be a
problem of not enough stacks or them not being big enough. If you have
any suggestions, I would love to hear them.

Frank,
Just try visiting the Autodesk Press web site at
http://www.autodeskpress.com
You can find lot of details on using R13 for specific fields over here.
Try also the New riders publications.

Lu - Are you referring to a concatenation of text_parts, or
are you referring to a list_box or popup_list?
There is no way to use a fixed-width font in a concatenation
of text_parts, but you can display the contents of a list_box
or popup_list in a fixed font with the following DCL attribute:
   fixed_width_font = true;

G.,
The local ATC where I live, is not very good. The offer very few classes
in beginning and intermediate AutoCAD use. Are all your ATC's like this?
I have wanted to take some advanced classes on customization, or AutoLISP,
or 3D solid modeling... more advanced classes, something! Are all ATC's
like this, are the ATC's only good for introduction, but not for the
people who already know it want just want to upgrade their skills. It's
at a community college, and when I have talked to some people and
mentioned that it is the ATC for the area they laugh. What's happening?

My US Robotics modem came with a program called "Quicklink" which included a
windows fax print driver. It installs as a system printer. To use it I just
configured a system printer in AutoCAD for that driver and "print" to that
printer just as I would to any other printer. Bear in mind that you can't fax
a drawing file; only an image of one.
Surely, there must be others out there.

Thanks for the info. In my case, the crash occurs at the same incidence
in Win3.1 and 95.

In my experience, it is the most unreliable application I've ever used...

In Win3.1, I have 48MB RAM + 48MB swap file. I will try larger swap file
size. In Win95, swap file is handled by Windows automatically, and I have
500MB of free space on the disk, so it shouldn't be the problem.

I used the word "incomplete" for two reasons. First, it crashes too often,
and this means that it is not working as it should, at least in my
situation. Second, I heard that to fully utilize AutoCAD, I have to
purchase third-party addon programs separately. IMO, highly expensive
software like ACAD should include everything the users need, otherwise
it is "incomplete."
Some people mentions its capability and flexibility to customize by
lisp or something, but I don't think it would justify ACAD's high price
because stand-alone programming language applications, such as Borland C++
or Visual C, cost much less than ACAD.
In my personal, one-dimentional opinion, approx. $1000 is reasonable
price for ACAD.

Subject: Nut & Bolts Layering
From: Dave Griffith
Date: Wed, 18 Dec 1996 09:43:17 -0700
I am an Architectural Designer and have used Autocad for several years.
I started out in drafting on the board. In the last couple of years we
have started using x-refs quite a bit with Paperspace/Modelspace. I
cant imagine trying to put together a package without a layering guide
similar to AIA, so that I can manipulate the drawing by freezing/thawing
or whatever.
In our company we have two groups of drafting, an Architectural
Engineering group and an Engineering group. The AE group uses a
layering convention similar to AIA. The Engineering group is using
about 5 layers on their drawings. The layers are object01, object02,
object03 ect. They then set the line width for each layer (object01 =
very fine, thru object05 = heavy line). So the purpose is to draw every
"very fine" line on your drawing on the same layer and every really
heavy line is on is on the same layer. Their layering separates line
thickness instead of objects. They tell me that their purpose is to
make their drawings look like what they would draw on the drawing
board. So, they dont need the complex layering that an AE type of
drawing would.
Is there a better way to put together Mechanical/Electrical "widget"
type drawings? I cant believe that the "widget" type of drafting is
still doing drawings the same way they have done for 100 years, with the
exception of using a $4,000.00 computer with $1,500.00 software instead
of a $3.00 pencel and paper. Maybe its not productive or usefull for
them to use a 3D model of each part and then use Paperspace to open up
viewports to show the views you want.
I would appreciate hearing from any "widget" type drafters on how you
put together your drawings.

Subject: Laying out 3D drawings for Plotting in PS....
From: adrianjl@aol.com (AdrianJL)
Date: 18 Dec 1996 20:38:38 GMT
I have a question for you all. I've been using paper space to plot some
of my 3D drawings, and different viewports to get the different views.
Now my question is this.... let's say you have a model of a telephone in
3D, you have 3 viewports, one of them has a top view, the other has a
right side view, and in the 3rd vieport you want to show the phone but
exploded. If you move parts in model space the changes will appear in all
of the other viewports. The way that I have been doing it is copying the
entire model and focusing on the second model in one of the viewports, but
since the models are in 3D, the drawings can get real big! Do you have
any suggestions for another way of doing this? I have tried setting the
model up in a position I like and then plotting to file using DXB, and
then DXB in to paper space, but this has it's downers too, you loose all
the ability to modify the arcs, lines and circles because it all comes in
as plines. If you all have any ideas let me know!
Thanks,
Adrian Laveaga

First, you really should upgrade to R13C4.
I think the solution to your problem is to use multilines, not poylines or
traces. A multiline style can have the property of being filled with any
color you choose. Then you just draw the walls with multilines and they are
filled as they are created.

Or perhaps Autodesk is over paying Carol Bartz. The world is rife with CEO

From: laney@ckn.com (Rick Laney)

I am having problems with my HP 5P laserjet system printer. My True
Type Fonts are not printing properly. They only fill partially. I am
presently using AutoCAD R13C4 on Win 95.
Note: The fonts were printing properly when I was using Win 3.11 and
AutoCAD R13C3.
I have been using Win 3.11 system printer with AutoCAD 13C3, the true
type fonts and arrow heads filled properly. I recently upgraded to
Win 95 and then updated to AutoCAD 13C4. My true type fonts only fill
about 50% and the arrow heads in the dimension lines don't fill at
all. Line width is set @ .020" textqlty=50, textfill=1, fill (on) ,
it doesn't matter if adjust area fill is checked or not, none of the
optimization settings have an effect either. I am using arial.ttf and
arlrdbd.ttf. The screen view is filled and looks good. It just won't
print the way it looks on the screen.
Thank you for your help,

Subject: Newbie AutoLISP question - concatenating strings

Hi.
I am trying to learn AutoLISP, and have run into a problem.
This is what I would like to do:
(setq string1 " Middle ")
(setq string2 (strcat "Left" string1 "Right"))
such that string2 = "Left Middle Right"
Apparently, strcat won't accept a string variable as an
argument. Is this correct, and if so, is there a way around
it?

If you hate Autocad so much, then why do you waste so much time telling
everybody your the "Expert Autocad Prgramming and Customization" (see above)
and "Co-Author of Maximizing Autocad R13". Do you often spend great deals of
time on inferior products? You obviously spent a great deal of time learning
Autolisp and other programming aspects of Autocad. I can tell from reading
your previous postings on such matters. Then again with your ego you probably
claim to have invented it or just woke up and "know it all".
Or did someone from Autodesk just piss you off to the point where you have a
personal agenda to slander them every chance you get?

Subject: HELP! Solid Modeling question
From: briah@indy.net
Date: Wed, 18 Dec 1996 23:49:05 GMT
I need to "extrude", if you will, one shape into another.
e.g Imagine a tube that is square on one end but circular on the
opposite. The "parent" geometry may vary in complexity,
We've been doing this for years on Anicam and now Smartcam but when it
comes to Autocad...stump city. Any suggestions?
thanks

Limiting a users choice of software add-ons is NEVER a good idea.
Whenever one company has a monopoly on a market, their users are at risk
of being at their mercy.

In mechanical drafting, things can change from one job to another so much
that it's hard to have a layering standard that fits everything. If all
your drafting is "Widgets" then sothing different can be fine. If your
drafting Widgets, thing-a-ma-jigs, do-hickeys, and thing-a-ba-bobbers,
them it's a little different. Assembly drawings we use several humdered
layers at times, piece part drawings, no more than 6 usually.
Sincerely,
