if the above is true ,, then why has eaglepoint purchased another
companys software engine that will allow them to produce a stand alone
product (like Microstation) and abandon the autodesk environment
altogether. also if eaglepoint is so hot a product why must they lower
themselves to dirty marketing tricks like claiming to be the product of
choice of Departments of Transportation, colorado comes to mind boys,
when they know that the departments don't even use their software. also
everyone that i know that has tried eaglepoints product now use it for

I believe a stationary engineer is one who operates and maintains
power plants (i.e. steam power plant for heating buildings). You
can often find them in boiler rooms in large buildings or
industrial plants. Sometimes, they are also called "power
engineers" although the subtle distinction between the two is not
clear.

The Draftsmaster I have sitting in the other room has two RS 232 serial ports
and an HP-IB port. The Draftsmaster is a serial device.
You can plot to the parallel port by configuring plotter to plot to a file by
default, then naming your default plot file lpt1. Or you can use the Autospool
feature, spooling the plot to a temporary file and running a batch file in the
background. Plot spooling is covered in the Installation Guide on page 45. There
is also a tech-paper available for download from the autodesk.com web site and I
believe there's also a FAX back document available as well.

Steve ...
I gather you've been using multilines to some advantage. I've fought with them
for some time trying to come to grips (no pun intended) with how one goes about
editing them. My furstration stems from ....
I draw a perimeter wall (2D plan here). I've defined a multiline that has, say 5
elements that represent the outer finish, like the siding, the sheathing, the
stud width and the inner layer of drywall. The problem comes into play when you
go about trying to break out openings for doors.
The MLEDIT function works fine but there's no obvious way I see to "accurately"
create this opening. And to arbitrarily break a "hole" then stretch the ends
doesn't work since the two resulting parts still act as a whole.
The intersection clean-ups for line such as I've described do not work
consistently and in some cases not at all for me. Once an MLINE has been mitered
with another, a merged or unmerged intersecting wall will not clean up properly.
And I haven't even begun to try embeding shapes or other complex geometry in a
line yet! (grin)
In the end what I've resorted to was simply drawing all the walls with
multilines then exploding them all into lines that I could edit to get the
openings. This seems like a waste of the object type. A proper implementation
would have been, I should think, an auto-update such that if you changed the
definition of an mline, all instances would reflect that change ala dimstyles.
If an mline is broken, the two halves would become individual elements that
would allow edits, especially using stretch to lengthen them.
Interestingly enough I tried the "lenthen" command and AutoCAD returns a message
"This object has no length definition.

It worked for me???
The only thing I'd suggest is adding a space after "Left " and before " Right"
so string two will be returned as "Left Middle Right" instead of
"LeftMiddleRight"
What sort of problem(s) are you encountering that leads you to believe that if
doesn't work?

In addition to Steve's suggestion you might consider WinFAX. Any Windows FAX
program that installs itself as a system printer should work. Then all you do is
configure AutoCAD to use the Windows system printer and you're on your way.

To my knowlege, we don't have the ability to change the profile or corss section
of a shape as it's being extruded, not in Acad "out of the box". If you require
true solids for this you will have to resort to virtual "machining" if you will
by taking, as in the case you describe above, a piece of square stock and using
solids subractions lathe off the end to a circular section.
If you don't need true solids you can use a ruled surface between the two end
sections.

Hi:
	There are packages available from Autodesk and others that have
block libraries. We tried the one from Autodesk recently. It has lots of
symbols, but they are mostly for Electronics design. If your interested
in Power Electrical Drafting we were very dissapointed with the depth of
blocks available in the Autodesk package. Perhaps someone can suggest an
alternative or Autodesk is planning on bringing out an Electrical only
block library? Be aware that the block system used in AutoCAD is more
awkward than a lot of other CAD systems out there. I hope this helps.

Hi Steve,
In plain Autocad you could set up Autocad towards a spreadsheet, and use
parametric design. Altough it's some work in it to do it proper, you can
try this. An example to lead you on your way is in the shaft files in
your sample directory, look for the shaft.* files.
Since I only tested it some time ago I don't remember whether this is an
ADS or ARX code, but if you don't find out of it, I can check it up for
you.
Hope this helps,

Anybody have any ideas or better still, a solution?

It is easy to plot out multiple views of your drawing
e.g. plan elevation & 3d view by using paperspace viewports
Set tilemode to 0 use mview to draw viewports
Use ps (paperspace) and ms (modlespace) to switch
between editing your model and the vewport layout
it is very easy and powerful once you get the hang of it
Printing a redered drawing with the plan and elevation is
however more problematic.
I suggest that you try this approach:-
Render your model and export it as a eps (Encapsulated Postscript) file
Then import the rasterized eps render file into AutoCAD paperspace
This however can slow AutoCAd down making regens etc very slow
You may prefer to export your plan and elevation into a graphics
package as dxf files along with your rendered file and print
your drawing from that.
Please e-mail me if you need any more help

Hi Richard,
To allow for multiple configurations you just make two configuration
directories, to which you copy your acad.ini and acad.cfg (acadnt,cfg in
NT).
Make two shortcuts to Autocad, both with the option '/c C:',
where cfgdir is the name of the directory with your configuration for
that shortcut. Then make your configuration changes as needed.
Hope this helps,

Hi Tony,
If this is so (and I have no reason to disbelieve), why is not VILL
separating it's runtime interpreter into a separate DLL. Then we'd have
only one interpreter running and installed, instead of multiple copies
of the same.
Or maybe the question should go to Basic ?

To take that one step further, have your network admin create a capture
command as mentioned above, lets' say lpt3, change your plotter settings to
plot to file, when asked for a file name supply lpt3, your plot well merrily
pipe down to the plotter. This works on Novell, I know cause it's what I do.
If you need more info then above drop me a line.

Subject: Q:How same menu name for DOS and WIN?
From: Heiko Ploehn
Date: Fri, 20 Dec 1996 15:05:53 +0100
Hi,
I have the same menu-filename, say heiko.mnu in different directorys,
e.g. \r13\win and \r13\dos. But if I open in DOS a drawing which was
previously opened in Windows, acad13 tells me that it can not find
\r13\win\heiko.mnu . This is correct, because in DOS \r13\win is not in
the search path. But how can I tell Acad13 to take only heiko.mnu as the
menu, and use the first heiko.mnu that it finds, instead of searching
for \r13\win\heiko.mnu?
Thanks in advance

Hi Heiko,
When you select menu for a file or a prototype drawing, choose the 'Type
it' buttom and type the menu file name, without the path. Then save your
drawing.
Happy holidays,
Hope this helps,

From: "Mitchell S. Todd"
	Actually the increase is inherent to the process of compiling
	high level languages into machine code. The point of high
	level languages is to remove as much of the computer-specific
	(ie, "low-level") tasks from the programmer's job, to better
	allow the human programmer to concentrate on the abstract, human
	level aspects of his work.
	The abstraction in higher level languages makes it easy for us
to
	understand what is going on. The thing is, computer hardware is
	terrible at abstract thinking. As a result, machine language
software
	has to hold the CPU's hand through each and every step.
Consider
	this straightforward procedure in c:
		a = 1;
		b = 2;
		c = a + b;
	In assembly language, this example would look something like:
		LD  0x07AF, 0x01
   		LD  0x07B1, 0x02
		LDA 0x07AF
		ADD A, 0x07B1
		LD  A, 0x07B3
	14 bytes of c code yields 56 bytes of assembly code...and this
	isn't considering the possibility of having to carry a 1, which
	would add yet more code into the procedure.
<
Concerning the size:
--------------------
With Lisp bytecode (and all other bytecode compilers) its different.
Compare the size of FAS files (or BI4 files which are not optimized) to
LSP source files. Each operator (built-in function) needs only one or
two bytes instead of a longer string. The hash-table lookup is not
needed anymore at run-time, its done at compile-time. It should be
linear anyway but it needs less memory. User symbols (not-built-in are
stored as strings.
With other bytecode compiled languages (perl, python, java to name a
few) its the same. All these have the advantage over machine code
compilation, that the compiled code can be interpreted and easier
debugged than for example delphi pascal or compiled c code, where the
debugger is in fact a symbolic disassembler.
With high-level languages you debug high-level constructs.
The disadvantage with such bytecode compilers is that you need a virtual
machine which interprets the code and actually converts to machine code
(assembler). Therefore you need a dll or exe (with vill its an arx,
which is in fact a dll).
If visual basic is bytecode compiled or compiled into some other
intermediate code I dont know. Would be interesting though.

You can actually do that, but its much simplier for the developer to
package all in one and dont care about memory (600kb now per rts). If
you know for sure that the customer already has the run-time system
installed (villrts.arx), you can simply package just the FAS files. You
can check this at installation time. See the sample VILLRTS.LSP. With
Vill 1.x this was the normal procedure.
If you plan to sell upgradable modules, just link the basic package with
the RTS (arx) and package the others as projects (FAS files). Then the
basic package must be loaded first. (and the other modules must be
compiled with the non-link pragma)
Hey! I actually do the Vill support here at usenet, where is Pit
Steinlin ??

I guess you wanted this one:
Tony Tanzillo has written a better (and foolproof) function to convert

Do you want an description of the recursive process or can you guess it
from the code? :)
Okay:
1) Check for each subelement of a block the minima and maxima.
2) If its a block do it for all subelements for this block, but apply
the block scaling (the 4x4 block transformation matrix) to the results.

Finding the endpoints alone is not enough. Consider a 180 degree arc
starting at 90 degrees and extending to 270. The min and max X-
coordinates won't produce the extents of the arc. Now consider splines,
ellipses, etc. There would be a lot of math involved. A seperate
formula would need to be produced for each entity type.

My job at Heise Industies (Blow Molding) did self checking and speed.
They kept losing money because they always had to scrap parts or rework
the molds because they didn't have time to check the drawings or
impliment a checking procedure. So it took twice as long to get a mold
out the door or to a point were it was a quality mold. I would stay away
from self checking jobs which speed is also essential. I witnessed 6
Cadd
operators get fired on the spot for failure to adapt to such a system.

Or with Lisp:
Circle:
  get the quadrants, ie. with polar
Arc:
  check if the quadrants are inside the angles
  and so on.
Text:
  check (textbox)
curved polylines:
  if (not (zerop bulge)) convert the curved segment to an arc
  (code is in Maximizing AutoLISP I hope or at the GLNADS.C in the SDK2,
  or in my forthcoming book in the Graphics Library)
MTEXT:
  haven't checked yet if (textbox) applies to MTEXT entities too.
  If not you have to get somehow the width table of the fonts used
  and add them up. (should be in the TTF and PFB binary file, but thats
  rather hard)
  Question: Does ARX provide an extents method for this object?
3DSOLID:
  uuh!
  Either check the text output result of the massprop command, or apply
  the accompaning ARX functions :))
What else? ...
Okay, some code:
;;;
;;; GL_BUL2CIR
;;;
;;; Conversion of an polyline arc with two points and a bulge to a
;;; circle with midpoint and radius.
;;; seg: '(bulge p1 p2)
(defun gl_bul2cir (seg / bf p1 p2 cotbce x y rad)
  (setq bf (car seg)
        p1 (cadr seg)
        p2 (caddr seg)
        cotbce (* 0.5 (- (/ 1.0 bf) bf))
        x (* (- (+ (car p1) (car p2)) (- (cadr p2) (cadr p1))) cotbce)
        y (* (- (+ (car p1) (car p2)) (- (cadr p2) (cadr p1))) cotbce)
        rad (distance (list (car p1) (cadr p1)) (list x y))
  )
  (list (list x y 0.0) rad)
)
;;;
;;; GL_PTARC
;;;
;;; predicate if point is on an arc segment or not.
(defun gl_ptarc (starta enda pt circle / ang)
  (setq ang (angle pt (car circle)))
  (if (< starta enda)
    (and (<= (- starta *GL_ANGTOL*) ang)
         (<= ang (+ enda *GL_ANGTOL*))
    )
    (or (>= ang (- starta *GL_ANGTOL*))
        (<= ang (+ enda *GL_ANGTOL*))
    )
  )
)
*GL_ANGTOL* is usually 1e-6
