Keith,
Have you looked at used ATTREDEF? It most likely wont perfor exactly as
you desire but it's not too bad. I'm looking at developing a program to
redefine attribute blocks, much in the same way that redefining just a
regular block does when inserting blkname=c:\blkname. Meaning, you don't
need to recreate the block by selecting the objects, and have the
attribute values remain the same, AND have the attributes postition and
rotation update with the drawing. Kind of a "HOMEATTRIB" command much
like "hometext" does for dimensions.
I just went through this same problem about 5 minutes ago.
Sincerely,

Subject: Help - Using ADI plotter driver w/NT 3.51 network plotter
From: "Joe Kovalski"
Date: 20 Dec 1996 17:44:29 GMT
We are running Acad R13 on a Windows NT 3.51 workstation. The server has an
Encad Novajet 4 attached to it using an Encad 3400X Fastport multiprotocol
micro print server. This is hooked up using the network wiring so that the
plotter does not have a normal port name like COM1 or LPT1.
Whenever I try to configure Autocad 13 to use the Encad ADI driver, I am
asked to supply a COM or Parallel port name. Autocad won't accept the
\\MACHINE\\DEVICE name of the plotter on our network. We also have a
machine running Win 95 on the network and there was a very good document on
the Adesk web site for solving this problem in the Win 95 machine. Is there
any information on making NT 3.51 think that there is a parallel port which
does not really exist so that I can configure Autocad?
Thanks,
Joe Kovalski

I ran into this problem when buying a BJC4550 and after contacting
Canon, I found out that they do not and never will support Windows NT
(any flavor). The Nt drivers don't support color. You may wish to
spend $400 (g) to ask MS how to do it, then let me know. Good luck

Subject: Canon CLC700 plotting with PS-ADI - problem
From: thierron@t-online.de (
Date: 19 Dec 1996 13:20:15 GMT
We have a new Canon CLC700 color laser printer/copier with Colorpass
RIP our ACAD-Workstations should print to.
Printing to windows system printer with ACAD13/Win works fine, but
printing with ACAD ADI Postscript driver or QMS ADI Postscript driver
from ACAD13/Win or ACAD12/DOS makes problems.
When we specify plotting in A3-Format (297mm x 420mm) the output is in
A4-Format (210 x 297) ans the plot clipped to the limits of the paper.
Does anyone know of an appropriate driver for the Colorpass/CLC to print
from ACAD ?
Any help very appreciated!

Doug,
Try this lisp routine. It may have been published in CADalyst or
CADence a few years ago. If not, it was written by Dave Todd.
Just load the lisp file and start it with the command "cla"

Subject: acad 12 dxf problems
From: Burkhard Wangenheim
Date: Fri, 20 Dec 1996 20:07:31 +0100
hello world!
we have some troubles with acad 12 dxf files. some time ago, i imported dxf
files into corel4, which was no problem. now i tried to import these files into
corel 6 but failed; only a part is displayed. afterwards, i tried to re-import
these files into acad and also failed! why couldn't acad read its own dxf-
files???
a message like 'a polyline must have at least 2 vertices' or '7* unknown block'
appeared and no re-importing was possible. is there a possibility to solve
that? can i change the dxf's or the dwg's before converting them to dxf?
many thanks in advance for a short email!
best regards from stuttgart, germany,

Subject: Sharing files between AutoCAD and VisualCAD
From: Stan Crook
Date: Fri, 20 Dec 1996 11:34:07 -0800
I have a sitution where I receive drawings in AutoCAD format. I own
VisualCAD and am able to import the drawings correctly. The problem
stems from trying to save the files back to AutoCAD format: properties
are lost. My need to save back to AutoCAD is because the file must go
back to the source from which I acquired it: and they only use AutoCAD.
How can we work on the same data file(s) using different software
packages?
The creator of the file is using AutoCAD on a PC, release 12.
The editor of the file is using VisualCAD on a PC (most current
release).
Can anyone provide a solution?
Thank you.

It seems that the parallel port has to be in uni-directional mode.

Subject: HELP: Internet Utilities config problem!
From: mep@raita.oulu.fi (Marko Poutiainen)
Date: 19 Dec 1996 14:08:00 GMT
I have been unable to intall AIU and I need to complete a job with it
before Sunday, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
The problem is simple: When configring the driver in ACad, the program
says it unable to load this file (??_dwf.dll).
I have tried reinstalling the package several times, to no avail.
The other problem, maybe related, is that when installing AIU, the
installation program says, it's unable to find Netscape Navigator Gold,
even though it definitely is installed. Then when starting ACad, I get the
error message "Unable to find default browser. You will not be able to
start the browser within this program".
What can I do?

Most of my work experience is in the Printing Industry as Pressperson and
in
Prepress, so AutoCad as a career move may not be feasible but the field
sure
has my interest. I have no past history in Drafting, Engineering, or
Architecture
but am very computer literate and was hoping a Cad "Pro" could give me
their opinion or relate a similar experience of a career change.
As far as training goes, Comp-U-Cad, an authorized dealer in Carpenteria
Ca.,
(No this is not a Sales pitch !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), has a 17 week course on
a DOS platform
 that is reasonably priced.
My main concern is will I be considered for an entry level Cad position
based
entirely on this course?. Common sense tells me no but I hoping I'm
wrong.
Thank You for your time and (hopefully responses).

Steve,
You might want to check your viewres setting. This could cause AutoCAD
to "appear" that it is not going to the endpoints.

Subject: FS: Canon BJC-4550 11x17 bubblejet $415 or best offer
From: buzz@ibm.net (Dave Simons)
Date: Fri, 20 Dec 1996 21:13:40 GMT
I recently bought a Canon BJC-4550 11x17 bubblejet printer, and
realized I just don't need the wide-carriage. I paid around $550 for
the printer about a month ago, and I've put about a dozen sheets
through it, max. All manuals, driver disks and ink cartridges
included. Black ink cartridge never used, still in protective holder.
I've haven't even filled out the registration cards yet. Included
software still in shrinkwrap. For all practical purposes, this printer
is still new.
The lowest price I've seen for this printer recently is $499, at
Office Depot; it's yours for $415+shipping, or best offer.
All the details on this 11x17 Wide-Carriage bubblejet printer are at:

Hieko, Why not create a directory called menu, under the r13 directory,
and place the menu files there.
When you open a drawing, the menu that was last used is stored in the
drawing database, path included.
This should solve your problems.

Kevin, I have done this a few different ways. One is through the menu.
and one that uses lisp and dcl.
I wouldn't be able to give you the lisp and dcl files because it's part
of a huge program that my Engineering department uses to create
construction drawings that can spit out a material list.
The menu way is probably the fastest way to do what you need. the only
thing you need to do is to make slides of your blocks (which is what you
were planning on doing anyways).
E-Mail me at desim@mid.org if you want any more info

Look at using a script file. The "delay" command will allow you to pause
your slide show for a specified amount of time.

I had the exact same problem, with a machine very similar to yours. Did
you happen to load the Autodesk Intenet Utilities along with Autocad.
That was what was crashing mine. if you did load the AIU software try to
uninstall it and thne try acad again.

What's a dood stop?
Seriously, EaglePoint did lower prices significantly in the market.
Softdesk has had to improve their product and lower prices to answer
Eaglepoint.
On the other hand, I would not buy Eaglepoint again - but I do not want
AutoCAD to become a closed shop. I don't know how many of you remember
the closed shop of IBM, where even minor items (such as a light pen)
cost hundreds of dollars.
I have a tremendous database of information, all in Autodesk's
proprietary file format. I do not want to be held hostage to arbitrary
pricing by a company that has me by the balls.
So, I have no answer. I wish that someone would offer a quality
alternative to AutoCAD+Softdesk before Autodesk figures out just how
much it can bleed us without quite killing us. The bigger Autodesk
gets, the less it cares about the one and two man shops that once were
its bread and butter, and where many of us work.

Subject: Question for Mac users of the DOS card and AutoCAD 12
From: strudors@aol.com (Strudors)
Date: 21 Dec 1996 02:09:31 GMT
Hello,
I recently purchased an Apple DOS compatibility card along with an 8 meg
simm for this card in order to run the DOS version of AutoCAD 12. I am
using a Power Mac 6100/60. AutoCAD runs fairly quickly on this setup and
I've been happy with the overall performance. Just a couple of questions
I hope some of you will be able to answer.
1) How do I get the mouse to work in AutoCAD? Are there any software or
drivers I have to install?
2) I am using an Apple 14" monitor. The AutoCAD drawing window is a
little small vertically. Is there any way to increase this windows so it
covers more area?
3) When I launch AutoCAD, it always asks me for the base.dcl, txt.shx and
acad.mnu files. I have to type the location of these files in manually.
How can I configure AutoCAD to eliminate this?
Thanks in advance to anyone who replys.

You are probably just picking to close to the arc which will
jump to the center,. Try picking the farther up the line that is
tangent to the arc. The dimensions I would guess just use a form of
the near osnap. I have found no easy way to dimension to quadrant that
aren't tangent tho.

Kent,
I recevied this from Russell at a000369@airmail.net
> Is it possible to diminsion tangencies and applying assembly constraints to a
> tangent arc/circle?
No. But there is a way around it. You must use what they call
construction lines. The best way to show an example is to send faxes. My
work fax is 214-257-7223 in Dallas Texas. But if you do not have access
to a fax, I will try to explain an example.
Draw a circle. Place a line in the center of the circle at a 30 degree
angle and trim the lines to the edge of the circle so that both ends
line on the circle and the midpoint is in the cente. No use chprop
command to change the linetype to hidden, or anything but continuous.
You might what to change the color so that you know it is a construction
line. You have to change the properties, not just place it on another
layer. Now use amprofile and select the circle and the line. Now use
ampardim and select the line. then select a point in space on where the
origin of the dim will be placed. The size of the circle does not
matter. Now amextrude to 1". This may not be the best example.
Try this. Let me know how it works. It is hard to describe what you
want to do, With out a picture.
It worked great! Constuction lines are very usefull.
The other problem I am haveing is to find a way to constrain a tangent/arc/quad
to another part
Example: Take a .250 dia wire that is bent at 90 degrees or any degree and
apply
constraints to the tangencey of the arc/quadrant and have it sit flush with a
flat surface or tangent with another arc/quadrant.
Thanks for your reply
Merry Christmas and have a happy new year!
