You can do it with a P100, 1 gig + Zip/Jazz drive, TFT but go for the 12",
and 24 meg. But if they'll buy anything, go for the gold.

I know that you had 3d capability on your list, but I'd like to mention
Imagineer Technical from Intergraph anyway. While it is only 2d, it will
read all AutoCAD versions and write up to version 12, read/write DXF,
read/write MicroStation. You can program add-ons for it in any
OLE-Automation aware language (VB, C++, Delphi). Is an OLE 2.0 Server and
Container (drag and drop from/into Word and Excel, etc). Lots of
dimensioning tools, parametric relationships, SmartSketch (eliminates snaps
and tentatives), and much more.
It received an nice review from Tony Tanzillo, who is a frequent poster to
this newgroup, as well as numerous others. And it has won numerous awards
this past year as a Version 1.0 product. You can check out the marketing
stuff at http://www.intergraph.com/iss/products/prodtool/cad/

Hello, I have a problem with "file protected" message when I shall save
AutoCad drawings. It is a frustrating problem. Because the way to go is to
save it with another name, then save the current name, and this is no
problem.. I know the feture with "read only" in the "new" & "open" requester,
but this is not the fault.
My setup work in network with an IBM-AS400, and I think that the network is
the problem, because when I save on my own drive, It works perfectly..

Set all your pens for each color to 7. This is done in the plot dialog
box, under pen settings. You can also "export" these settings to a text
file and use a text editor to change things. This is done in the plot
dialog box, under Device Settings & Default Req and Save Defaults to File.
You can then load the changes to the PCP by using Get Defaults from File.

I just took over as draftsman at a company where the prior guy
determined line weight by using polyline width. All are single line
segments, not multi-segment polylines. I am wondering if he actually
drew lines using the pline command or perhaps had some sort of LISP
routine that he would use to change all the lines on a particular
layer to plines with a particular width.
While the drawings are quite cumbersome to deal with since some of
the AutoCAD editing commands don't work with plines, such as fillet.
But it did solve some problems... using the plotting service company
was much easier because there were no lists of colors and line weights
to use and when a drawing was plotted at a much smaller than usual
scale - the lines also became finer so you could see the detail.

Is AutoSurf another tool for AutoCad ? Hmm. Well, in my job we currently use
R13c4 with Genius 13.1, we only draw in 2D now. But if I get it as I will,
there will be Mecanical Desktop and much more 3D afterwards.
I have only worked two months in this job.. And it is my first job ever ;-)
But I love 3D.. My biggest 3D object ( done on school ) was an Mountain Bike.
But the problem was to draw the seat and the oval tubes that goes to rounder
in the end of the back fork.. And therefore Mecnical Desktop is a must..

Don't worry about that ;-)

Well, I'll hope that we get this program soon on my workplace.

Does anyone know of a good way to bring Anvil-5000 (version 5) files
straight into Autocad 13 (or Mech. Desktop). We've had problems using IGES
or DXF to do this. Some geometric tolerancing notation doesn't come
through correctly and there are some other random blips. All Anvil files
are just 2D.
I appreciate the help!

Hi, two really great AutoLISP gurus,
sorry to mention (and repeat to Reini), but
	(< "-1" "-2")
while
	(> -1 -2)
thus _numeric_ comparison can't be simulated with _string_ one
for negative numbers as suggested by Tony.
Simple RLSORT test shows:
	Command: (rlsort '(1.1 -2.2 -3.3 4.4) 5)
	(-2.2 -3.3 1.1 4.4)
What a strange sorted order!!!
BTW: can someone to explain me, please, why
	(ACAD_STRLSORT '("+A" "-A"))
     gives
	("-A" "+A")
whereas "-A" is greater than "+A" and
     ACAD_STRLSORT sorts in increasing order?
Is this ACAD AutoLISP `implementation detail' :)
     real bug or intented feature?
Returning back to Tony's sort approach:
IMHO: better solution is to shift every numeric value
to be sorted to positive range by adding
	(- (apply 'min numbers))
Let me skip the details for next Tony's article :)
BTW: small obvious typo in NTOS should be fixed too:
(defun ntos (num prec)
   (cond
      ( (minusp num)
         (rtos num 2 prec))

Burny,
Good news. We felt that there was a need for Softdesk newsgroups and we are
in the process of adding them to our web site. They should be up and running
by the end of this week. We are in the testing stage right now and are
working out the kinks before we go live. Please check back at the end of
this week. I will be interested to hear what you think.
Thank you for taking the time to send us your suggestion. If there is
anything else you think we could add or change to improve the Softdesk site,
please feel free to contact me. Thank you for using Softdesk products.

Hi Allan,
With AcadR12 there was a sample lisp called 'spiral.lsp' (in the sample
directory). If you use the command 3dspiral, you can draw the centerline
of the spring. If you want the spring with thickness you just attach a
circle at the end of the spring center, and use the command 'EXTRUDE'.
BASIC STEPS:
1. Load spiral by typing: (load "/spiral")
2. Draw the center by typing: 3dspiral
3. Set the ucs to one end of the spiral: UCS
4. Draw a circle with the spring thickness: Circle
5. Extrude the circle along the spiral:extrude.
Hope this helps

The limitation is with the client (AutoCAD). There is a column and row
limit based on the width of the columns and the height of the rows. You
can still use this feature. You will need to do the copy-paste routine
more than once. A couple of trial and error checks will determine just
how many rows and how many columns you can bring over at one time.
Bring in what ever amount you can and then move to the next ajacent area
and repeat the process untill you have all of the desired area into
AutoCAD. Everything will still function as you expect and if you will
take the time to set up the sheet one time you should not have to redo
it. This feature does work quite well. Just a few tricks to tackle
first.

It depends on how you want to draw a spring...
2D or 3D
Orthographic or Isometric or Oblique or..
and how much detail do you need?

Hope you don't mind a novice question here.
I have a building floor plan whose file size is approx. 2 megs.
I would like to save the basic floor plan (without the
electrical/mechanical layers etc.) so I have a smaller file (less

Any help would be apprectiated

From: Louis Maros

The iges translator which came with Autocad 12 was able to iges out
parametric spline curves entity 112 and parametric spline surfaces
entity 114. The iges translator in autosurf/ Autocad 13 did not support
these entities. I bought the products from US Cad in Ca. after
personally speeking to an individual in the iges translator group at
Autodesk and being assured these entities would be supported in the next
version. Autosurf has since become part of Mechanical desk top and now
the second version of this product is out. When will the iges out
function be able again to output 112/114 entities?

The easiest way is to turn off all layers you don't want and then use
the "Wblock" command to wblock out the entities you do want in the new
drawing. This should help.

Sending large binaries through the newsgroup is frowned upon, unless it's a
binary newsgroup, of course. Which comp.cad.autocad is not. It's far better to
attach such files to email...

as the originator of the thread requested.
Why is this practice frowned on?
Many people pay for their access to the web and Usenet on a time basis. While
that's becoming less and less the norm, it's still prevalent. If everyone
started sending these large files through Usenet we'd begin to spend a good deal
more time than we'd like, everyone, downloading a file that was intended for
just a few people.

Assuming R13 here.
Create a helix using Tony (Tanzillo)'s routine off his web site.
Create a circle of diameter equal to the cross section of the coil. Make sure
the circle is drawn in a plane perpendicular to the last segment of the helix
you drew. Use EXTRUDE/PATH to "sweep" the circle along the helix.
It's not the best solution in that the helical coil will be segmented to the
degree that you've specified in creating the helix. What would be best is if we
had the option of sweeping or exturding a section along a spline fit 3D
polyline, but we don't.
Uhhhh,... you did mean a coil spring, did you not? (grin)
Don't have R12 and AME loaded any more but the AME manual makes no reference to
extruding along anything but a linear path.

I have R13 loaded on my NEC Versa 2000C with 16MB RAM running WFWG. This is
hardly enough to do any kind of serious work - I use it primarily for user group
demonstrations with an overhead projection panel.
For small drawings it's useable but I'd get a *lot* more RAM and carry around a
real honest-to-goodness mouse and keyboard if you plan to do any serious work.
I've yet to meet a keyboard on a laptop that I liked and the touch pad on my NEC
is minimally effective.
Beyond that, I haven't had a bit of trouble with the thing.

There has been considerable discussion in this group the past few days about a
policy Autodesk is starting to enforce - I guess it's been around for some time
but only with the release of R13 has it been an issue. At any rate, Autodesk
says the license is "non-transferable" and will not honor such a transfer. In
fact there is talk about prosecution of those who sell their copy(ies) of
AutoCAD.
Yes, it's bogus. The issue, as it's been discussed here is that too many "used"
copies of AutoCAD were being used to obtain upgrades to R13. This holds no water
either since Autodesk received full and ?fair? compensation for he original copy
when it was purchased. How they are out money is hard for me to understand other
than this new policy enforcement will require *new* copies of AutoCAD to be
purchased where those old ones, such as yours and others, will now have to
remain on the shelves or become shims under legs of wobbly tables.

You are going too far.Accelerators are supposed to be a keystroke (or
more ) that are used to access menu items (or toolbars). The easiest way
to increase your productivity is to edit the acad.pgp file and add
aliases for any commands you're using often. Careful though to not
duplicate aliases. Also the number of those aliases is reflected in
memory usage as each of them uses a litle bit.

Check out the chglay.lsp routine on my web page. It has a function that
shows all of the layers in a drawing in a list box. You should be able
