Hi Xiang,
I was a bit quick on this one last night.
You can in fact use entmod to change the current layer settings if
you're accessing the layer table entry. However, to see the changes on
the screen without issuing any command, you must call (entupd )
where is the entity name of the layer table entry.
Sometimes it's best to sleep on the answers before issuing :)
Sorry for confusing you,
Mortenw.

I pulled out my R12 Win license and WHOA! it says "Autodesk,Inc grants

remembered the license as transferable but that must be going back to

Subject: VRML->STL and STL->VRML: STLpack(1.2) software
From: Slava
Date: Mon, 20 Jan 1997 21:40:22 -0800
This is an announcement to the STL format users' community of a program,
STLpack(TM) Version 1.2, available as shareware.
Just like it's predecessor STLpack (1.0), STLpack (1.2) is a Windows 95
and NT utility for transferring files of STL (3D Graphics) format into
a new compressed PSL (Packed STL) format for storage. It can also span
disks if the user's packed file is too big to fit on one diskette. But,
it can not only save an STL file in a VRML (WRL) format, but moreover,
it extracts 3D solid object information from a VRML file and lets the
user save it as an STL file.
Based on initial tests, STLpack compresses most STL files to
approximately a sixth or seventh of it's STL format size. This is about
two to four times better than the more general, widely available file
compression utilities. Moreover, because STLpack seamlessly spans disks,
one can use it as an all inclusive easy to use utility for STL file
storage and transfer.
Because STLpack is able to create a VRML file from an STL file, the user
can view these files with any one of many VRML viewers, many of which
are free. Such as the plug-ins available for the latest versions of
Netscape and the Internet Explorer.
Moreover, the user can take a VRML file with any solid object and
extract that object into an STL file. Though, the user should be aware
that if the VRML file contains an imperfect solid object, the resulting
object in the STL format will not be perfect.
To get STLpack (1.2), go to
http://www.winsite.com/info/pc/win95/misc/stlpackd.exe or download
stlpackd.exe via anonymous ftp from ftp.winsite.com/pub/pc/win95/misc.
Of course, the registered user's do not need to do anything and will
receive the new version free of charge.

Brian,
PMFJI, the soft engine benchmark script tests more than just zooms and pans.
Editing commands such as move, copy and rotate are included as well as others.
I can't recall at this time all that is included but from my point of view it
seems to be a thorough test of the program.

Zipping files works without problem - if you have the disk spanning add on
for WinZip (assuming you are using WinZip) you can get unregistered
versions of both at their web site http:\\www.winzip.com

Hello Everybody,
I'm planning to create a common section drive in order to store our
Engineering drawings comming from Autocad. Fifteen users will be connected.
I'm just intending to copy all the files in a network drive without taking
any precautions...or maybe just in read only mode.
Do you have any experience on it?
Do you have some other advices or comments?
Thanks

If you print to system printer, first set system variable "DITHER" to
"OFF".
This disables dithering when printing to system printer. If this doesn't
help, see and try

Subject: Hitachi Digitizer problem with ACAD R10 & ACAD R12
From: Joe Briggs
Date: Mon, 20 Jan 1997 17:38:03 -0800
Problem:
We have encountered a very annoying problem with ACAD R10 & ACAD R12 on
a pentium 166 computer. We have transfered a working system from a 486
66mhz computer to a new P-166 and are suddenly having intermittant
Digitizer problems. Other than the difference in obvious difference in
processors the only other change is that the new machine has a DIAMOND
STEALTH 64 video card. The symptoms are that sometimes Autocad
recognizes the digitizer and other times it will not. When it does
recognize the digitizer both the digitizer and the keyboard exhibit
intermitent freezeups that are between one and ten seconds in duration.
There does not seem to be a pattern as to when the digitizer will or
will not work. All hardware components in the new computer have been
swapped out as well as a different digitizer of the same model used, in
all cases the problem persists.
Questions:
Are there known compatibilty issues between the Hitachi model 1111
digitizer and Stealth 64 Cards?
Are there known capatibility issues with the Hitachi digitizer driver
and the pentium processor ?
Any and all suggestions would be welcome.
Thank you

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Rather than a POINT entity, use a block that contains a
POINT and an attribute definition.

I have been trying now for several months to get a GTCO Ultima I digitizer to work
with Windows NT. So far - no success. Be careful - you may have the same problems
with Windows 95. I would suggest you set up a separate system to try it out -
that's what I did and am I ever glad I did. I would have been totally out of luck
if I hadn't don this.
I have given up and gone back to using Release 12 for DOS with the digitizer. If I
want to use my copy of AutoCAD Release 13, I find that it works best with only the
mouse - I guess that is what AutoCAD wants for their future - a mouse operation.
All this only points up to what I have read over the last several months in this
newsgroup - "If you want real productivity, go back to Release 12 and a digitizer.
Keep me posted as to your progress - I still have hope that there is some way to
make the digitizer work on Release 13 with Windows NT. I have even asked Rajeesh
for help but it must have him stumped also since he has not replied.

I have been working with Release 12 for Windows on Windows NT 4.0 for a
couple of weeks now. The first problem is that you cannot use third party
display drivers. Another problem was plotter configuration, but I think
that was due to network administrator's inexperience.

Gentlepersons-
Surely no one with any experience expects AutoDesk to provide the kind
of documentation that is available from the so-called third party folks.
The books and specialized software come from people who have lived at
their machines 12 hours/day and developed the routines needed to make
themselves more productive.
AutoDesk is not in the book publishing business, it is the business of
writing CAD software. Besides, given their propensity to charge
outrageous prices for their products who would want them to be the only
source for additional information.

I am having a problem dimensioning diameters and radii on 3d solids on

cylinder etc, the dimension is offset to one side of the required
position. The dimension information is correct i.e. diameter, so I am
baffled as to what is going wrong. this does happens about 75% of the

I am running R13 on win 95 with 64Mb ram on a P120.

I've the same problem, slightly different printer. At the HP site I

Hi Joe,
I have a simolar problem using r12, SoftENgine and a Hitachi 1212e. I
hace a little lisp function in my acad.lsp to reinitialize the tablet.
The following program may help.
(DEFUN C:R()
	(GRAPHSCR)
	(COMMAND "redraw")
	(COMMAND "re-init" 5)
)
On occasion, you may need to run this more than one time. It's a pain
but it works and is cheeper than spending weeks on the phone to
Hitachi and Autodesk (if you could ;) )
Cheers

Subject: Re: New AutoCAD FAQ

I don't think I'd include tech docs in the FAQ for one simple reason.
Generaly, the FAQ is copyright by whoever puts the thing together. All
Autodesk tech docs are copyright by Autodesk, therefor, they would have
some form of ownership in the FAQ. By all means, the FAQ should point
out what and where these tech docs are located but should NOT include
them. With Autodesk policy such that it is, I'd like to see Autodesk not
have any official part or Autodesk copyright information contained within
the FAQ.
AutoCAD users have been supporting themselves for years on traditional
BBS networks like Intelec, FidoNet, Rime and CAD specific BBS networks
like PCGNet, and on the InterNet with not support or recognition in any
way. The only place where Autodesk sees fit to regularly participate in
support, is on CompuServe because the make money from CompuServe. Now
that a mass distributed, free, list is about to be put together, Autodesk
sees fit to include there tech docs. If Autodesk, was really concerned
with a FAQ and helping free support, they would not only have their own
FAQ but would allow the end users to purchase products like their
Supportdesk instead of restricting it to dealers and developers.
Sorry Cara, but my response in no way reflects my attitude toward you
personaly but rather your employer's policies.
Sincerely,
--

Subject: Nonproportional printout ACADr12dos to HP660
From: jhammond@bmtc.mindspring.com (Jim Hammond)
Date: Tue, 21 Jan 1997 14:03:53 GMT
I'm having a problem getting a true "1 to 1" print out from my Autocad
release 12 for DOS to my HP Deskjet 660Cse printer.
The only default printer in ACAD that would print at all was the HP
Paintjet. An Autocad instructor, who couldn't resolve this problem,
said the drivers I installed should have taken care of that. He also
said changing printers wouldn't solve the problem.
I've tried every possible combination under plot options, using a 1"
square drawing for reference. I simply want a drawing shown on the
screen that fits on the page to print to actual 1 to 1 size on the
paper. Under almost every plot combination, the drawing most often
shows up at around 60% actual size in the lower left corner of the
drawing.
Can anyone suggest a path of action to get this one resolved?
Many thanks in advance for help on this one.

Tim:
Have you tried switching to ModelSpace instead of TILEMODE 1?
Then WBLOCK everything from MS out into one drawing.
From PaperSpace WBLOCK everything into another drawing.
Open new drawing and insert these blocks in MS/PS. Might work.

Subject: FOR SALE (DUEL MONITOR GRAPHICS ACCELERATOR)
From: fmchrdd@sunset.net (Richard Uhlmann)
Date: Tue, 21 Jan 1997 16:33:19 GMT
I have 2 - 4 MB Appian Impulse graphic adaptors for sale. The Impulse
Advanced Graphics Accelerator is a high-performance, high resolution
single-slot graphics solution that features two sophisticated on-board
64-bit graphics accelerators, duel monitor outputs, high-speed PCI bus
interface, expandable frame memory and full VGA compatibility. With
two display channels, Impulse is designed to support single and
multiple monitor configurations.
Regardless of your application, Impulse maximizes system performance
by off-loading graphics functions from the CPU. The PCI local bus
interface capitalizes on the speed of the Impulse on-board
accelerators with the industry's fastest transfere rates - to
accommodate even the most demmanding graphics applications. The end
result is fast, high-resolution graphical output and display.
Impulse also features Appian's powerful and easy to-use HydraVision
Software Tools for Windows 95 and Windows NT and provides extensive
support for other operating environments and third-party applications.
The 2 cards for sale were purchased in January 1996 and have been in
use on Windows NT workstations running AutoCad and MircoStation 95.
The retail cost was approximatley $550. I am asking $250 each.

I would create a BLOCK of the interior and exterior walls
and WBLOCk this block to a DWG file (this will give you certainly
a file smaller than the 2MB of the original drawing).
An alternative is to do a partial DXFOUT of those walls by
selecting them via the OBJECTS option in DXFOUT.
You can DXFIN the result into a new drawing.

Subject: Adding Colour to Acad Drawings????

Does anyone know of add-on s'ware for adding colours to acad drawings? (preferably using pantone references)
I've used Coral Draw with good results, however the Acad dwg. doesn't always turn out. I've tried .dwf and clipboard methods.
The lines and curves sometimes get corrupted and I have to spent time straightening and adding curves.
Thanks.

Subject: layer names when binding xrefs
From: "James Feeney, P.E."
Date: 21 Jan 1997 17:54:04 GMT
I have a bunch of xrefs in a dwg that use the same layer naming conventions
as the "current" dwg. I need to bind all the xrefs and would like the
layer names for the resulting blocks to combine with the current drawing
layers of the same name.
Why is it that if you insert a normal block into a drawing the layer names
as they appear in the block dwg get added to or combined with the current
dwgs layers. However if you xref a file and later perform a "bind" the
xref'd drawings layer names are prefixed by the drawing name.
Please E-Mail me at jfpe@worldnet.att.net if you have a work around other
