How can I create an image file with lineweights in a recognized format? I am wanting to create a file using Acad for the purpose of importing it into another application such as WordPerfect or Pagemaker when writing technical documents. In the past I have used AutoCad 10, 11, & 12 to write .PLT files and treat them as .EPS but after installing R13 I have not been able to get these applications to recognize the file as anything usable. (What changed?) The advantage of using the .PLT was that it had gone through the Plot "filter" and had line thicknesses and such added creating a much more pleasing image. Exported images such as .WMF, .EPS and even .DXF do not carry over this information and make images with hairlines that do not print well and look really bad in the document. How can I create an image file with lineweights in a recognized format? Thank you sterling@longview.netReturn to Top
I have had similar problems and found that (under Win'95) even if I specified a drive other than 'C:' in autocad for the 'swap or temporary' files '95 forces ALL autocad temporary files to drive C:. Further I have found that I needed a MINIMUM of 45 to 50 Mb free on drive C: to handle the load. Hope this helps! KenReturn to Top

Subject: How to register CAD-drawings?
From: Roland Bengtsson
Date: 21 Jan 97 22:27:11 +0100
We have 13 stations at my work with AutoCad V12 and 13 some Dos and some run Windows3.11. The main problem is that we haven't a central dataregister for the drawings. Most people save their work in their personal HOME-drawer just for not loosing it. There are thousands of drawings... This has 2 main disadvantages. You can't pick up someone elses work easily, and you waste a lot of HD-space. We have found a nice database program to manage the drawings but it costs about 11000$, it's currently too expensive. Is it possible to use MS Access to manage this? The ideal solution looks like this: 1.You search for something and gets 10 hits in Access. 2.Now you can mark a post and see a preview of the drawing (this is important). 3.Mark the drawing and select the 'Load in AutoCad'-button. and it select Autocad as the active application and load the drawing. Is it possible to send a previewpicture of the current drawing to Access whenever you hit save in AutoCad? I don't want to activate Access, it just sits in the background, recieve the picture, save it and then sleep again. IS Windows3.11 capable of this? Note I'm note an experienced user of Cad and Access, but I understand that they are both very powerful and programmable. I have tried to include OLE-object (a picture) in Access, but you can't see it. I have a great experience of Amiga and there is a general programminglanguage called Arexx. Most big applications understand this today and this had of course facilitate a task like this. I think it is much easier to make programs to "talk" to each other on Amiga thanks to Arexx! If you have any advice for me I appreciate if you answer by email. I'm assuming you mean you'll copy hand drafted drawings to ACAD for this price? Have you perchance bothered to figure out your hourly wage at these prices? My Estimate for copying D Size Architectural drawings, which typicallly take 8 to 10 hrs to draw in CAD, at these rates is that you may be earning at least $3 to $4 per hour. (Not calculating amortization of your hardware and software, materials, postage and packaging for the finished plots). Is this a living wage where you live? Subject: Block substitution routine needed - long description follows
From: mgeorge
Date: Tue, 21 Jan 1997 19:20:28 -0700
Block substitution routine needed - long description follows I have unsuccessfully searched several of the web pages found and tested several block redefine routines. I found no block substitution routines. A list of those I have tried follows this request. Please email any responses to me directly in addition to posting. Thanks in advance for your help. Michael Description of what is needed: An AutoCAD rel. 12 compatible (our upgrade to 13 is in progress but still a ways away) lisp routine to substitute (not redefine) a block and pull the attribute values from the old block placing them in the default locations, height, justification, etc. as defined in the new block, not as they were originally. The old now unused block will be purged later as part of our drawing startup procedure. The blocks in question are always inserted at a x,y scale of 1 and a rotation of 0 so I have no need for this routine to deal with block scale and rotation. The insertion point of the original block will need to be a part of this routine. Also the this will be used to substitute only one occurrence of one block at a time. So I have no need to do this recursively. Here is the outline of the routine I envision.Return to TopPlease select a block to replace. 1. Check to see if selected entity is indeed a block. Send an appropriate error message if it is not a block. The selected entity is not a block. Please select another or enter to cancel and return to the AutoCAD command prompt. 1. Check to see if the block contains attributes. Send an appropriate message if it does not but still continue with the block substitution program to just substitute one block without attributes for another block, with or without attributes. 2. Retain the attribute values of the original block noting the text parameters associated with each attribute in the block. These values will be input as the attribute values for the new block. Replace with new block named ? 1. Accept keyboard or dialog box input of the block or drawing file name to substitute for the old block. 2. Return a list of any attribute tags and their values that existed in the old block but do not have a matching attribute tag in the new block. 3. Return a list of any attribute tags that exist in the new block but do not have a matching attribute tag in the old block. Where I need this is to substitute a different, generally larger or smaller title block and border. Our title blocks have many attributes and they display at different locations and different text heights depending on the sheet size and orientation. A size vertical vs. D size horizontal for example. I have several block substitution and redefine routines that substitute the graphic entities but place the attributes in the location on the original block rather than in the default locations for the new block. A list of those I have tested follows. An attribute edit must be then done on all the attributes changing their location to the appropriate spot in the new block. This is more time consuming than just re- keying in all 25 attribute values and then correcting for the typos created in the re-keying process. :-( blkupd.lsp by Mark Stanton - downloaded from e A block redefine routine that retains the original location of attribute values. UDI - User defined information Situation I need to be able to insert/create a "beam" as a block with data associated with it. This can be done manually using commands "attdef, ddattdef & block" however there is not enough flexability with inserting blocks. I have written a fair amount of lisp and have tried to create the blocks using basic "assoc" commands, however the extra UDI associated with the block does not seem to be easily input or extracted. (ie. there is only one "assoc" number (100 : AcDbEntity) associated with the user defined data in a block) Question 1. How can a block be created with lisp including associating UDI? How can the UDI be extracted using lisp? (How does ATTEDIT or DXFOUT do it?) ------- Current Project General Information The company I work for produces pre-stressed concrete beams which are used in the production of concrete floors. The beams are in the shape of an inverted T with the flange height varying depending on the beam type. They are spaced at 480 CRS Residential & 600 CRS commercial with a compressed cement sheet sitting on the flange. Notes Program No.2 currently uses the layer information of a line to assign information to the spreadsheet. It will be easily modified to use the block information instead. Description Program No.1 will: (Incomplete) - Create blocks (beams) with lisp (Incomplete) - Assign general information & UDI to the blocks depending on the type of beam. (Incomplete) - Insert other blocks (eg. Piers for Ground floor slab) depending on UDI Program No.2 will: (Complete) - Use DCL to create a Dialog Box with UDI / variables needed. (Incomplete) - Extract length, type, weight, etc. information from inserted blocks (beams) (Complete) - Sort all of the blocks (beams) from smallest to largest (Complete) - Assign a unique mark number for blocks of different lengths (Complete) - Extract length, type, weight, etc. to Excel spreadsheet -- --------------------------------------- Simon Hutchison 3 Thompson St. Abbotsford, 3067. To update or re-define a block in AutoCAD. If the block is really a "XREF" (external reference) simply edit the actual block as a drawing, then when the drawing is opened, the XREF will be updated automatically. If it is truly a BLOCK, then you must still edit the actual block as a drawing, then open EACH drawing and do this: Command: Insert block name: title=c:\blocks\title then take all the defaults for the rest of the prompts then REGEN to update of course "title" is the block name, and "c:\blocks" would be the path to the revised block Good LuckReturn to Top

Theoretically, there should not be any problem. Not sure why the "guru" is holding out. As long as the version is the same, AutoCAD is the same (in terms of Win95 vs. Win 3.11). The only difference is the Win 95 interface. We went from R12 DOS to Win 95 R13. I used R13 for Win 3.11 to develop our current menu before we switched! Good Luck!Return to Top

With Soft Engine the only choice is DOS or Windows!! Both perform great! Since every thing I do is in Windows (i.e. word processing, etc.) it makes it easier that my CAD program is Windows. With DOS I have to flip from windows to DOS and back again. With the Windows version of AutoCAD, everything I do is a Windows based program. THE ONLY WAY TO RUN AUTOCAD FOR WINDOWS EFFICIENTLY IS WITH A THIRD PARTY VIDEO DRIVER PROGRAM!!!!! (i.e. Soft Engine!) This program is about $400. It's your decision. I am offering a service to reproduce "old" hand drawn drawings of Architectural, Electrical,Structural, Mechanical, etc. for your documentation purposes. If your drafting department has a slew of old racks of your plant, company, hospital, building, etc., and are considering changing over to an Autocad type reference, please let me know. I would be happy to quote any job. Usually, two ways to go. I charge $15.00 an hour for most drafting work. If you have alot of plans that are in need, I can change my charge based on amount of work to a per/dwg, contract basis. Disk copies of all drawings will be furnished at no additional charges. If you would like new hard copies of your drawings, I charge $2.50 per copy. Please let me know if I can help you in any way. Sincerely, James R. I need some information about starting salaries in the "InteriorDesign" and "Architecture" fields.I'm about to graduate from college with a Bachelors degree in InteriorDesign. I'm proficient in AutoCAD Release 13 c4h, and 3D Rendering inAutovision Release 2. I can create walk-throughs with Autovision, & Slideshows with Premiere. I have managed a Windows NT 3.51 network, but want to work in my field ( ie., as an Interior Designer, for an Interior Design or Architectural firm ). I would like to be prepared for that imminent question..."So, what sort of salary do you expect?" The only official numbers I have recieved were from the Florida Department of Labor. They place beginning AutoCAD designers at the average starting salary of $13.22 per hour. But I would expect that the more you can produce (ie., 3D rendering and walk-throughs) the more you should make. I would be very appreciative to any professionals already in the field who can assist me with information on this topic. Subject: AutoVision Animation Question...Please Help!

Date: 22 Jan 1997 05:52:19 GMT
First: I'm working in AutoCAD r13 c4h & AutoVision 2 c2 on a dual processor Tri-Star with 264 megs of RAM and an 8 meg accelerated video card. I'm setting up an animation of a complete 3D restaurant that I designed, and I'm having a problem. I have created my "camera path" throughout the restaurant with a polyline. What I want to do is, as my camera moves along the polyline, have my "camera view" point forward no matter which way the polyline turns. AutoVision won't allow the "camera view" to follow the polyline, it will only allow the view to look at "one" point while walking through the restaurant, therefore making it look as though you are walking backwards and sideways at times. I would be very appreciative to anyone who can assist me with my problem. The other day a read a benchmark test MMX 200 vs. P5 200 vs. PPro 200 (256k) vs. Klamath. The summary was, that the MMX is between the PPro and the P5 in the BAPCo test suite (collection of real applications): P200: 100% MMX: 115% PPro: 135% Klamath: 139% In the "Direct 3D" Benchmark the MMX outperforms the P5 from 132 to 336% So you will get some performance benefits, they would be pretty good if AutoCAD uses the Direct 3D API for graphic display or rendering. Since they don't (AFAIK they don't even utilize Open/GL under NT), you won't see huge improvements, but maybe R14 brings some new graphics drivers... Greetings, FrankReturn to Top
