I don't have my handbooks with me right now, but I think that
Marks Handbook and Roak both give the equivalent tip stiffness for a
uniform tapered beam. If the tip mass is 10 times that of the beam
the beam mass is virtually negligable. You can always use the rule
of thumb of adding 1/3 of the beam mass to the tip mass. Of course
that is true for uniform and not tapered, but I think you would be
within 5% of the correct frequency by then. You won't get any closer
with a prediction because you don't really know the E, the boundary
conditions aren't really fix (zero slope), the tip mass isn't really
a point mass, etc.

I recall visions of my youth when my dad farmed with draft horses.
No, this has nothing to do with any technical discussion, either (grin)

Subject: Bucket Elevator
From: planier

I have just installed a bucket elevator to be used in the manufacture
of fertilizer. It will not discharge properly. The drive pulley is
maintaining 110 rpm. The manufacturer says that this is correct. We have
varied the speeds from 72 rpm to 139 rpm with the same results--it
retains material or backfeeds. There is no blockage at discharge. I
would appreciate any suggestions anyone could make to help me solve my
problem.
