I think your reference to PE should be EIT or FE.
The PE is an 8 question, 8 hour exam.

Subject: American Drawing Standards???
From: enrique.juaristi@crpht.lu (Enrique Juaristi)
Date: Tue, 07 Jan 1997 14:33:17 +0100
I work in Europe.I have come across an american drawing from which we need
to obtain dimensions and tolerances for an electrical part (a
light-to-frequency converter). This data is given like so:
24(10)
------
15(7)
I know the figures outside the brackets are dimensions in mm. and those
inside are in inches. We are puzzled because in most cases the top figure
is almost twice the bottom figure. Does that mean a tolerance of 80%?
Can anyone explain what this means?

Subject: Bulk Solids Courses
From: Jenike & Johanson
Date: Tue, 07 Jan 1997 09:26:15 -0500
For over 20 years, experienced engineers from
Jenike & Johanson have presented one of AIChE's
most successful courses,
Flow of Solids in Bins, Hoppers, and Feeders
(http://www.jenike.com/binhofee.html).
Over 2,500 engineers have attended this popular
course, always ranking it highly for content as
well as presentation quality. As a natural
extension of this course, we are continuing to
offer the following one-day courses
which focus on specific bulk solids handling
topics:
"Don't just live with your problems:
Retrofit troublesome equipment to improve flow and
 product quality"
		January 13, 1997 Westford, MA
(http://www.jenike.com/retrofit.html)
"Mix it up - and keep it that way:
Understanding blending and segregation and their
 effects on product quality"
		January 14, 1997 Westford, MA
(http://www.jenike.com/mixitup.html)
The primary objective of each course is to provide
a basic understanding of solids flow principles as
they relate to the individual topics, and how to
apply them - leading to insight into why problems
occur. You will learn typical solutions to typical
problems, plus practical do's and don'ts you can
apply to your job. Time will be available to
discuss your individual needs, as well as to tour
our laboratory facilities.
Fee: $695 per person ($595 each for multiple
attendees from the same company or multiple
courses.)

If the numbers in the brackets are inches, then the numbers might be
centimetres, but not millimetres as you indicate.
24 cm = 9.45 inches
15 cm = 5.91 inches (this doesn't seem like a good approximation of 7!)
You might want to have a second look at those conversions--are they
really supposed to be centimetres(inches)? If so, someone screwed
up--which is correct, the 15 cm or the 7 in?

: The PE exam last I calculated (again that was a long time
: ago) allowed for about 80 seconds per question if you wanted
: to hit all of them. And basically, if you had to look it up,
: you were dead.
Exactly right. You can't look up the answers on the EIT exam
if you expect to pass.
: The strategy I was taught was to brake the questions
: into three groups: first - go thru the entire test
: hitting all the questions you could answer almost
: instantly, second - go back thru hitting the questions you
: thought you could answer in about a minute, and third -
: finally start working on the longer problems.
Good strategy. It works. It also keeps your morale up since
you see what you've been able to answer instead of getting
overwhelmed with what you can't.
: That gave you approx 66% of the test out of the way with
: (depending upon how fast you had been) well more than 33%
: of the remaining time for the remaining questions.
: Of course, if by that time you had finished,
: you were off having a beer or three.
Well, maybe in CT but in California the nasty examiners
won't let the examinees out of the room until time is
called and all the exams are collected! :-)

Assuming the vehicle is not a tank, absolutely. Suggest searching under

Can't really say, unless by "in a small way" you mean you pretty
much stopped reading and doing math. In that case, you'll probably have
trouble, but see the remarks below.
>I don't want to discourage you, Murli ...

>the PE exams.
I was on the "passing point" panel when the new EIT book was introduced.
The new rules had only minor effect on the difficulty or passing rate. All of
the panel members, who had to have passed the EIT at some time in the past,
"passed" under the new rules, and most of us had not had time to study. My
gut feeling is that if you could have passed atthe time you left school, you
can pass today with modest, but serious, preparation.
On the other hand, the EIT clearly discriminates against some sorts of
would-be PE's. The statistics show that if you fail the EIT the first time,
you will probably not do well on another attempt. Perhaps it is
because they are poor test takers, perhaps because they really can't work
"book problems," perhaps because they are actually dangerous.
Only about 75% of BS Eng grads pass, but I have taught a lot of ME
seniors, and would hope that some of them would never be licensed because I
have seen the quality of their analytic work.
Having been through and around the registration process, I think it is
basically fair. I would agree that the Boards, NCEES, and NSPE have lobbied
to stengthen the registration requirements, but I have seen nothing that makes
me believe they have tried to make it harder to become registered, except for
attempts to bar "non-ABET" degree holders from attempting the exam. Many (not
most) science and technology degree holders CAN pass the exams if permitted to
try, and should be allowed to do so.

This is, I think, considered as taking "both at the same time."

But in this case, no one would know if you had passed the EIT anyway. The
papers go to Clemson, SC or Princeton, NJ or somewhere else for scoring.
(Never having mailed the, I'm not sure whether the preparation contractor
processes the mark-sense forms.)

Yes, at least something like this. In many places itis easier to find
large rooms on Saturday than on Friday. In addition, PE candidates are likely
to be able to get their employers to give the Friday test day, while some
college professors hestitate to let students out of Friday classes to take the
EIT. ("You want to ship my Human Relations class for WHAT? You ARE a

What brand of Vacuum Pump? In what country was it manufactured? The
answers to these questions may help narrow the choices.

Subject: ************JOB: BIOMEDICAL ENGINEER********* - johan_cv.doc [1/1]
From: kotze@uct.ac.za (Johan Kotze)
Date: 7 Jan 1997 21:08:37 GMT

Hi,
I am a final year masters student in Biomedical Engineering
at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. I did
Mechanical Engineering for my undergraduate degree. My thesis
for this year is the design and manufacturing of a concept
model for a five fingered artificial hand.
I am looking for a job to gain experience in the Biomedical
field. Due to the lack of excisting biomedical companies in
South Africa I am forced to look for work in other countries
to gain experience. I am prepared to work for low wages and
do practical orientated work in return for quality experience.
I am also prepared to work anywhere in the world. I can start
in the beginning of 1997. With the current value of the South
African currency the salary should not be a problem.
I have attached my CV as johan_cv.doc, a MS-Word 6 file. For
any additional information or questions please mail me.
Thanks
Johan Kotze

Please call me at your convenience. There are six Poisson's ratio's which can
be quoted. I'd quote them here but they are at work and I'm at home. Baltek
is the world's largest balsa wood grower, processor and applications
fulfiller. Major markets include power boating, industrial and transportation.

Be glad to help out.

Subject: BS5500 Flat Endplate factor C algorithm
From: guest@birdsoft.demon.co.uk (guest)
Date: Tue, 07 Jan 1997 23:43:15 GMT
As an ex pressure vessel designer, I noticed that many BS5500 design
programs require manual entry of factor C. May I draw you attention
to
	http://www.birdsoft.demon.co.uk/englib/pvessel/55003553.htm
where I present a C code fragement based on an iterative solution
using Appendix R to find factor C from fig 3.5.5(3). The figure may
be plotted using this solution.
P.S. the last edition I had access to was 1991 so this will require
verification. Please confirm that it's still valid.

I think you have a great idea there in offering this course. I am
interested in a course in control system theory with enphasis on
state space methods. I would be willing to enroll in such a course
for a reasonable fee.

There is also a huge volume of information on tensile/compressile and
impact strength testing equipment for the plastics industry (essentially
the same as for metals and other materials, but there could be some
interesting info here nonetheless...)
