Hello, Help! I am currently processing parts through 180C Sodium Hydroxide in a Teflon tank using an immersion heater covered in Teflon. This heater has failed 4 times with the manufacturer (Lufran) replacing it each time (at no cost) with new design modifications. The solution is saturated and can become a solid; however, I never let it get to this state to protect the heater. I would like to move the heater outside of the soultion. My first try was a cast iron pipe that was capped and used band heaters. This worked for the first day and then the solution attacked the cast iron. I know that this solution has attacked cast iron, both 304 and 316 stainless steels, brass, aluminum, titanium, etc. Does anybody have any suggestions for a container for this very HOT and aggressive solution. Help I need to find out if there exists a type of valve that will open fully and only fully at a given pilot vacume. And then close fully at a lesser vacume. The valve must only have two possible states FULLY OPEN or FULLY CLOSED and should go from one state to another in under 1 second. It would be preferable for this type of valve to piloted by vacume but differential pressure across the valve is also another posibility. I dont actually need a specific valve at this time but I do need to know if one like this already exists such that a supplier could develope one for my application if requested or would this type of valve be considered new technology. At this time, only a valve using this theory of operation is required the actual size and the vacume open and close settings are irrelevent. However if I could find an off the shelf unit with specifications remotly close to the following requirements the better my arguments would be for development for our specific application. Fluid: Fuel Oil Valve open vacume: 4 in Hg. Valve close vacume: 1 in Hg. Simple professional question: Suppose an engineer has to "translate" a set of hand-drawn pictures of product parts into CAD drawings for a CNC machinist to realise and reproduce the parts. Dimensioning the parts is straightforward, as is programming the CNC machine. But how does the engineer determine the tolerances of the dimensions? Like, by the materials involved? Hi, I am trying to evaluate the J-intergral of an interfacial crack - delamination between copper and polymer.The object was modeled in 2-D using ANSYS. Evaluation: 1) J-intergral became path-independent when the thermal stress was replaced with applied pressure!! 2) The origin of the co-ordinate system does not seem to affect the outcome. Help needed: 1) Is there special procedure needed when evaluating J-intergral on interfacial crack caused by thermal stress? 2) I read on article about M-integral that is superior for interfacial crack. I need some help in modelling an alternator, i.e. a synchronous generator plus a rectifier. I have equations of motion of a synchronous machine. I'm assuming I can get by without modelling the damper windings. The equations are of the form E(w) dI = A(w) I + V (1) -2J/P dw = Te - Ti (2) The crux of the problem is this: When operating as a generator, it is an inverse problem, since V is not an input but a result of the input torque to the rotor. This is not a problem if you assume you're connected to an infinite busbar as is done with large generators; however, we can't assume that here. Anyone know how to handle this??? There may have been a wetting agent (somehow glycerin sticks in my mind?) also used at the same time. Al powder is used as pigment in aluminum paint, and it's nasty to breathe -- wear a mask until all the powder is in the water.Return to Top

I used to run reactions at pH 14 at 300 deg C (supercritical) in a Nickel autoclave liner, and there was no visible pitting. The autoclave also employed an agitator, which was made of Nickel as well. You would probably be better off with a jacketed tank, with the inside walls made of Nickel and the outside carbon steel. You could then apply steam to the jacket to heat the caustic. Employing a mixer will also be beneficial, since this will avoid hot spots and decrease corrosion. Nickel is rather expensive, but not as much so as Titanium. Teflon has great resistance, but is poor for heat transfer. Try using a Nickel immersion heater. With no agitation, the elements get too hot and burn out. Even if you just bubble Nitrogen through the bottom of the tank this will be an improvement over natural convection. It would be good to install a thermocouple directly on the heating elements, and cut them out when the temperature becomes excessive. When are European patents going to be on the net. The US PTO has this, and can make some money from their service by charging people who want complete abstracts. Not that I like government in business, period, but this seems like a useful thing that did not cost them much to do. I've searched through the CD_Rom collections before as well, but I don't have access to those anymore and the univ libraries don't give you access any more even if you're willing to pay for a search. so I rephrase : Does anyone know of a site/company that I can do some of these searches, or get some of them done for a fee ? Many designers feel that the $85 cost per single copy (ordered directly from ASME) is much too high. In 1984, I purchased a copy of ANSI Y14.5M-1982 for a total cost of $42 (including shipping and handling costs). I remember thinking then how outrageous this cost seemed to be for a 150 page book when comparing it to other books of approximately the same length. In 1997, the latest version of this standard, ASME Y14.5M-1994, costs over twice what I paid ten years earlier. Granted, inflation alone contributes to some of the cost increase. Plus, the latest version is 84 pages longer than the 1982 revision of the standard. But, the cost of printing the book should not be the only factor considered when analyzing the cost of this document. It is unfair to compare ASME Y14.5M-1994 with a book written by a private individual. ASME Y14.5M-1994 is a national consensus standard on dimensioning and tolerancing principles and concepts. To acheive this consensus, ASME must draw on the expertise of approximately 100 individuals throughout the United States; from all types of industry, as well as the academic community. Consider the costs associated with coordinating such an effort. ASME must arrange and pay for meeting rooms, support staff, long distance phone calls, faxes, postage, tons of paperwork, etc. ASME has been "footing the bill" for these development costs for the 12+ years since the last revision to this standard. As to content, ASME Y14.5M-1994 is NOT just a repeat of the same old information with a fancy new cover. It's true that the older tolerancing concepts illustrated in previous versions of the Standard are still there. But, ASME Y14.5M-1994 adds numerous NEW tolerancing principles and concepts not available under previous versions. These new tolerancing "tools" correspond with the latest in manufacturing and verification techniques. Plus, the new version of the Standard brings with it a new standard, ASME Y14.5.1M-1994, "Mathematical Definition of Dimensioning and Tolerancing Principles" which provides the needed mathematical rigor to tolerances in a computer-based maufacturing environment. If you think that ASME Y14.5M-1994 costs too much, consider the cost of ISO standards related to dimensioning and tolerancing. To get the equivalent information under ISO, you must order approximately 24 different standards and technical reports. Total cost: well over $700.00. These standards are compiled under ISO Handbook #12 for a cost of $120.00 (last time I checked). But the ISO standards are behind the tolerancing technology depicted in ASME's standard. By comparison, ASME Y14.5M-1994 is a bargain! Why can't you order it through a book store? I'm not sure. But, I don't know of any Industry or Military Standard that you can order through a book store at the local mall. But, there are a number of excellent reference books you can obtain which are based on ASME Y14.5M-1994. Some books I recommend are: "Geometrics III" by Lowell W. Foster (Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, Inc.) "Design Dimensioning and Tolerancing" by Bruce A. Wilson (The Goodheart-Willcox Company, Inc.) "Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing" by Gary Gooldy (Prentice Hall) "Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Workbook" by Al Neumann (TCI, Phone:941-383-4283) There are several other good reference books, however I don't have specific information on them. Yes, the latest version ASME Y14.5M does cost more than it used to. Is the price too high? Maybe. You can get the SCISEARCH database (which contains the SCI citation listings as well as bibliographic listings) thru STN International/Chemical Abstracts Service. Ph. 800-753-4227 for customer service. It is pricey. My 1995 pricelist says $120 per connect hour and $1.15 per "display all". I used it a few times and it adds up fast. I am in the process of designing a HVAC system with an air handler that has an existing forward curve supply blower. Ini In this phase of the project I will use 15% of the blowers capacity, but this low RPM range leaves me with low static pressure output and near surge/unstable conditions. I want to vary (VAV) this low flow 2000 CFM to 3000 CFM but I'm concern about surge problems.....Will a modulating face damper assit assist my fan while VAV valves vary the flow?.....What about a scroll damper/relief (and how do they work?)?....Any suggestions?Return to Top

I remember seeing an account of someone who claimed to be setting a speed record for a bicycle, and got up over 100 mph (the number 134 mph comes to mind, but I might be inventing this). The way he did it was, of course, to remove drag by `drafting' in an enclosed trailer that matched pace with him and did all the work of fighting the wind resistance for him.
