In Northern CA the wages of a licensed surveyor varies widely d.o.e. A
P.L.S. working for an hourly rate will get between $15 and $26 per hour.
The high end is usually for an individual working under an Operating
Engineers contract. That's not including $2.50/hour vacation and holiday
pay, employer contibution to an annuity fund, comprehensive health
insurance and a super pension program. Southern CA should be somewhat
higher.

There is an in-depth review of the software in the October, 1996 issue
of "Professional Surveyor" magazine. US price is $1595 for the top of
the line version known as Star*Net GPS. This version will adjust GPS as
well as conventional measurements. There is currently a special ongoing
for $1399. I posted a reply last week to your post, but it does not show
up today. It seems some posts stay here forever, and others are gone in
one or two days. Does anyone know why?
The above mentioned review basiclly says the same thing I posted
earlier. It is good software and well worth the price.

Notes
-----
1. NORAD Catalog Number is also known as U.S. Space Command (USSPACECOM)
object number and NASA catalog number.
2. No orbital plane position = satellite no longer operational.
3. Clock: Rb = Rubidium; Cs = Cesium.
4. Selective Availability (S/A) had been enabled on Block II satellites during
part of 1990; S/A off between about 10 August 1990 and 1 July 1991 due to
    Gulf crisis; standard level re-implemented on 15 November 1991;
occasionally off for test and other purposes. Currently, PRN15 and PRN28
appear to have little or no S/A imposed.
5. Anti-spoofing (A-S) was activated on 94-01-31 at 00:00 UT on all Block II
satellites (ref. NANU 050-94042); occasionally off for test and other
purposes. A-S was turned off on all satellites at 20:00 UT on 95-04-19 and
back on on 95-05-10; off again between 95-06-19 and 95-07-10; and between
    95-10-10 and 95-10-31. A-S has been off on PRN28 since 95-02-21.
6. PRN number of SVN32 was changed from 32 to 01 on 93-01-28.
7. The active clock on PRN01 was switched from a Rb to a Cs between 96-08-16
and 96-08-22 (ref. USNO and NANUs 134-96229 and 141-96234).
8. PRN05 and PRN06 are equipped with corner-cube reflectors for satellite
laser ranging (SLR). SLR tracking of the satellites will permit onboard
clock errors and satellite ephemeris errors in GPS tracking to be
    differentiated.
9. The decommissioning date for PRN06/SVN03 is the date of termination of
operations of this satellite (ref. USNO) and is about 3 weeks later than
    other published dates for "deactivation".
10. PRN16 will be moved from the E-3 slot to the E-5 slot to make room for
PRN10. An orbit maneouvre was carried out on 96-08-19 (ref. NANUs
    120-96204, 137-96232).
11. PRN20 hs been unusable since 15:18 UT on 96-05-10 and will not return to
service (ref. NANU 118-96204). Cause of failure: loss of 3-axis
stabilisation. PRN20 was moved out of the B-2 slot to make room for PRN30
    (ref. NANU 162-96256).
12. PRN28 has been moved from the C-2 slot to the C-5 slot, about 40 degrees
away. This move, which was initiated on 96-03-06 by lowering the orbit of
PRN28 by about 6 km, made way for PRN03. PRN03 is a backup for PRN28 which
has some undisclosed equipment problem. PRN28 will remain on the air, with
some subsystems shut down to conserve power (ref. NANUs 045-96066, NANU
068-96100, and GPS World Newsletter). The move was completed on 96-08-23
    (ref. NANUs 127-96236 and 144-96236).
13. PRN30 (SVN30) was launched on 96-09-12 at 08:49 UT. It achieved initial
usable status on 96-10-01 at 15:28 UT (ref. NANUs 162-96256 and 171-96275).
14. Announced date of next scheduled launch: 97-01-13 (first Block IIR
    satellite).

| There are many competitors. A few (perhaps most) of these receivers
| are probably better than the SSi, especially in that they track code
| on L2, and recover phase measurements on L2 with less noise. Great
| for high performance under difficult conditions. However, the SSi
| _is_ a very good receiver, these are all in the same general group.
| Most of my experience has been with the Trimble SSE (an older version
| of the SSi, not as good tracking under difficult conditions), but I
| have direct experience with most of the following.
| Ashtec Z12 (www.ashtec.com)
| - Sokkia's high end L1/L2 receiver is just an Ashtec in a
| different coloured box.
| - Geodimeter's high end L1/L2 receiver licenses Ashtec's tracking
| hardware in their front end, and is similar in performance.
| Leica SR399 1.800.645.9190
| - not the SR299, which is an L2 squaring receiver and not great.
| NovAtel Millenium (www.novatel.com)
| - this has just been released for the WAAS program, and I would not
| expect it to be available in a surveying unit for 6 months or so.
| Allen Osborne Turbo SII
| (somebody posted the address in response to your post already)
| - this receiver uses the same cross-correlation (developed by JPL
| and originally implemented by Osborne) as the Trimble
| - Topcon (www.topcon.com) sells this receiver under their name.
| There are other dual frequency receivers, but I only have used these
| data from these ones, the main surveying receivers. I think that you
| were speaking to a Trimble sales rep who meant that the SSi was the
| top of Trimble's line! ;-).

Subject: Surveyors in Missouri??
From: papabear@roadrunner.com (Jerry Anderson)
Date: Wed, 09 Oct 1996 05:51:25 GMT
I'm currently applying for registration in Missouri (by comity- I'm
licensed in 7 other states) and am considering moving to RURAL
Missouri in a couple years.
I'll probably continue in private practice (Just me & a helper - I
like to REALLY be in control of the work!)
I'd like to think of myself as a valuable resource to other surveyors
(Overloaded? Let me sub-contract a job from you) instead of a
potential competitor.
My questions are:
How's business??
What's the going rate for a good 2-man crew?
What's the going rate for a residential lot survey?
What's the going rate for a mortgage survey?
What does a good helper (LSIT caliber) cost you?
Anyone want to sub out some design/cad work in the meantime?

former member of the board said I got a VERY high score. (Still
wouldn't tell me what!)
Recently saw a book entitled "1000 land surveyors exam questions" or
something similar. 8-1/2x11, 2" thick. I don't have it but it looked
pretty good.
Since then I've taken and passed exams in AZ, CO, FL, NM, UT & NV, and
am currently filling`out the application for Missouri.
When studying for subsequent exams, I go to the law library & read all
the statutes & regulations relating to surveying in the subject state.
Mostly it's the SOS (Same Old Stuff), but I jot down anything that's
odd, new, or different. The day before the exam, I review my notes.
It's worked so far!!!

Subject: List of Govt Surveying Tech Reports Now Available
From: Michael Ravnitzky
Date: Wed, 09 Oct 1996 08:09:54 -0600
GREAT SOURCE OF SURVEYING ENGINEERING RESEARCH DATA AVAILABLE: HERE'S
HOW:
I have been studying access to Defense Department technical/research
reports, and the release and declassification of those technical
reports. It turns out that there are millions of technical reports on
every subject imaginable catalogued at the Defense Technical
Information Center - DTIC: many of their reports are not classified,
but are nevertheless still not accessible to civilian researchers,
journalists and others, except through the Freedom of Information Act
- FOIA.
DTIC WEB SITE IS SANITIZED & WORTHLESS: DON'T BOTHER WITH IT
DTIC does have a web site, but the indexes on that web site are
extremely misleading. One, they only search back 10 years., and some
of the journalistic research may require additional coverage. Second,
and more important, the web site only includes public documents that
are already available through NTIS-National Technical Information
Services. In that regard, it's pretty worthless. So forget the web
site and mail in your request directly.
TECHNICAL DATA ON ALMOST ANY SUBJECT: NOT JUST DEFENSE TOPICS
Bear in mind that the Defense Department has conducted research on
literally any subject including the environment, oceanography,
biology, medicine, chemistry and physics, history, animals, psychology
and sociology, behavior, anthropology, archeology, engineering,
safety, etc. etc. You name it, they've got it.
HOW TO GET IT
However, any person can get a complete list of these otherwise
unavailable tech reports by using the Freedom of Information Act.
Simply send a letter of request to Kelly D. Akers, Freedom of
Information Act Manager, Defense Technical Information Center, Attn:
DTIC-RSM, 8725 John J. Kingman Road, Suite 0944, Fort Belvoir, VA
22060-6128 USA. You should not need to call, but just in case,
her phone number is 703-767-9194.
WHAT TO ASK FOR
In the letter, explain that you would like a complete
computer-generated technical report bibliography (for all computer
database years) for reports associated with the subjects and keywords
XXXXXXX or YYYYYYY or ZZZZZZZ. Select your keywords or subjects
carefully, no more than one dozen per request. Use the word OR
between keywords, and include parentheses *s* with keywords to
indicate plurals also. DTIC will process your request very literally,
so pick your keywords with care. You might pick keywords like
*surveying*, *GPS*, *theodolite*, etc.
You can also request all reports by a particular author, or all
reports by a particular contractor or company.
Indicate whether you are a for-profit company, or a noncommercial
requester. Fees are not likely to be more than a couple of dollars,
but indicate in the letter that you will be willing to pay fees up to
$20 without additional permission.  This last sentence is important;
DTIC will not process your request without a statement agreeing to pay
fees.
It takes about 3-4 weeks to get a response. Once you get the list of
reports, you can select the ones of greatest interest or value and ask
for those specific reports with another letter, if you want.

Subject: MicroSurvey CAD 2.0...
From: Bill Walton
Date: Wed, 09 Oct 1996 14:41:38 -0700
MicroSurvey CAD 2.0 for the surveying and civil engineering professional
is now shipping. This message is being posted on pertinent newsgroups to
supply the latest information on available surveying software. Please
disregard it if you do not wish to read the following marketing message.
MicroSurvey CAD (MSCAD) includes a full featured 2/3D CAD plus the
surveying program, all in one. What cost almost $4,000 (COGO program,
plus AutoCAD) a few weeks ago, now costs just $1,195. If you need to be
fully AutoCAD compatible, but are tired of paying thousands of dollars
for the CAD portion of your surveying software, read on.
In the past, MicroSurvey COGO software (MicroSurvey software is Canada's
leading suppplier of surveying software, with more than 40% of ALL
registered Canadian land surveyors listed as customers) relied on
AutoCAD to provide the drafting component. Not Anymore! There's an
amazing new CAD from Germany called FelixCAD. This new CAD is incredibly
AutoCAD compatible. Yet, it's more fun to run, and way easier to use.
MSCAD is built directly into FelixCAD. This means MSCAD is optimized for
32-bit Windows (95, NT, or 3.11) operation (sorry, no DOS). And, unlike
other full featured CAD's running in Windows, MSCAD requires just 8MB of
RAM to run efficiently; 16MB to fly.
All data created in MSCAD can be saved directly to or from industry
standard DWG or DXF format, insuring full compatibility with the AutoCAD
world. If you know how to use AutoCAD, you can be running FelixCAD like
a pro in under one hour!
MSCAD includes the latest Windows features such as Windows Multiple
Document Interface (MDI). With MDI, you can open up to 4 drawings, with
up to 4 views of each - for a total of 16 editable views on screen at
the same time. Rendering and high speed line hiding is based on the new
Open GL graphics. MSCAD has support for long file names, with cut,
paste, and bitmap export built-in.
A quick MicroSurvey CAD 2.0 summary:
- Full surveyors COGO, including calculations and plan production
- Complete CAD, with power approximating AutoCAD R12
- Traverse entry, edit, closure calcs, and balancing
- Data collector interfacing (read and write)
- Point protected COGO database
- Subdivision design inlcluding automated lot designing
- Dynamic house placement in lot, with user defined house libraries
- Named street and road layout, with up to 5 offsets per side
- Area calcs with fixed area design
- Map/Plan check with closure
- Over 100 ready to use font sizes and styles
- Automatic plan setup for blocks and text sizes
- Symbol insertion and line trimming
- Maximum productivity in plan labelling
- LISP programmable with COGO database access
- Easily modified menus, dialog boxes, and tool boxes
- Full digitizer support
- Print/Plot to any Windows supported devices (what isn't)
If you would like more information on MSCAD, or FelixCAD, contact the
sender below.

Subject: New CAD software...
From: Bill Walton
Date: Wed, 09 Oct 1996 14:32:30 -0700
This electronic press release is being posted on pertinent newsgroups to
make people aware of a new CAD system from FCAD. Please disregard the
announcement if you are or not interested in reading the following
product annoucement.
For Immediate Release
FCAD INTRODUCES FelixCAD™...
A FULL FEATURED INDUSTRY COMPATIBLE CAD SYSTEM OFFERING INCOMPARABLE
WINDOWS® PERFORMANCE AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE.
September 31, 1996 Westbank, BC --- FCAD Canada Inc. today announced
the introduction of FelixCAD, the first moderate priced 3D CAD system
which combines full industry compatibility and high speed 32-bit Windows
operation. FelixCAD has been designed for Windows 95, NT, or 3.11 use.
FelixCAD incorporates advanced 32-bit features such as Windows Multiple
Document Interface™ (MDI). With MDI, users can simultaneously view and
edit up to four drawings, with up to four views per drawing , for a
total of sixteen open documents in any combination of 2D or 3D. Changes
made in one drawing view appear instantly in any other open view. Cut
and paste operations between drawings or other Windows programs are
executed instantaneously.
FelixCAD features exceptional AutoCAD® compatibility, with seamless
reading and writing of DWG® and DXF® files, both de-facto standards in
the CAD world. FelixCAD imports and exports both hidden and graphic
data, keeping all attributes, text, layers and entity data intact!
FelixCAD offers a very short learning curve. All of the drawing
commands required by professional CAD operators are included. For users
familiar with AutoCAD, command line entry virtually eliminates the
learning curve! For Windows aficionados, palettes and dialog boxes may
be freely moved about the viewing area, or moved to an icon for a true
Windows feel. Graphic tablet support is included, so users who have
missed these functions in some of the later releases of popular CAD
programs may have access to them once again in a state-of-the-art
product.
FelixCAD includes powerful text handling, associative hatching and
dimensioning, plus advanced detailing features like chamfering,
trimming, and filleting. User-defined settings and dimensioning styles
make the product adaptable to any standard. A detailed on-line tutorial
features graphic presentation of command geometry, and a built-in
Library Manager is available to help keep track of parts, symbols,
blocks, and drawings.
FelixCAD is a true 3D CAD system. It allows the user to construct in
the plane of choice. A "fast-hide" function is combined with high-speed
rendering based on the new Windows Open-GL™ graphics standard.
Rendering results are presented rapidly on standard 486 or Pentium-based
machines without excessive use of RAM.
FelixCAD incorporates an Open Architecture Design. User-defined "hot
keys" let the user optimize repetitive tasks. A unique command aliasing
system lets the user alter FelixCAD to operate almost identically to
their favorite CAD. Using the built-in Menu and Dialog Editors, FelixCAD
may be configured to specific disciplines by non-programmers. Palettes
and menus may be constructed, altered, and arranged to meet the exact
requirements of the user.
LISP and C/C++ programming support is included in FelixCAD. LISP
allows advanced users to extend program functionality. For professional
developers, an OEM version of FelixCAD (the FCAD Graphic Developer’s
Engine™) is available for building advanced C/C++ and/or LISP
applications.
FelixCAD retails for US$1,195, with introductory pricing of $995. FCAD
Canada Software Inc. is the exclusive Canadian distributor of FelixCAD
and the FCAD Graphic Developer’s Engine. FelixCAD is available in
multiple languages, and is distributed around the world.

We have had good luck with Altek. I have no idea what the competing
products are or the cost benefit. Haveing a light table under the work
can make the job a little easier. Coincidently they are about 3000 feet

Subject: Soft-Art P.C. Survey
From:
Date: 11 Oct 1996 01:29:11 GMT
Greetings,
Does anyone use Soft-Art's P.C. Survey software?
I am looking for an inexpensive software package that will perform COGO and
traverse closure and adjustment. I also need to have basic drafting
capabilities built into the software. My work consists of topographic
surveys and location surveys.
Is this an accurate, reliable program? Has anyone had a good ( or bad )
experience with P.C. Survey? Are there any suggestions about another
software package?
Any comments would be appreciated.

Don't know about P.C. Survey, but from the needs & type of work you
do, I would STRONGLY suggest you investigate SOFTDESK "survey
complete" and\or "Survey Lite" (I think that's what they're called)
It's essentially ACAD R12 that has been "crippled" by eliminating the
ACAD command line, and incorporating almost all of the SOFTDESK lisp
routines.
I reviewed it for the NM Highway Dept - If you're starting new it will
be a pretty good package - if you're an experienced ACAD user, the
lack of a command line will drive you NUTS!!!
