In article <5ami34$efs_001@dcn.davis.ca.us>,
jhframe@dcn.davis.ca.us (Jim Frame) says:
>In my opinion, the number one surveying concept to impress upon
>engineers (and engineers-to-be) is that property boundary surveying is
>not simply a matter of making measurements.
This is of course abundantly true.
Aren't these engineering students studying engineering surveying, though,
rather than boundary surveying? What can we tell them about engineering
surveying?
Are there even any states left where engineers may perform boundary surveys
without having obtained a land surveyor's license?

Can anyone suggest a source of info giving a detailed account of how you
calibrate a ships gyroscope. More interested in techniques employing GPS
than sun shots.
Thanks
Helen

I've read all the messages posted and find them to raise mostly valid
concerns. The cost of the software, the fear of being held hostage by a
dominant market force, competing packages, etc. These are all concerns of
any small business. But in the surveying business we all have to be
equipped to stay competitive. The cost of G.P.S. or Total Stations and
data collectors are prohibitive but these are the tools of our trade. You
wouldn't want to work with a T-16 and a chain anymore would you? I still
have my topo board in the garage and occaissionally I marvel at how
indispensible it once was. We purchase these pieces of equipment without
qualms and shouldn't balk at purchasing software (although it does dent
the old pocketbook) to keep pace with an evolving industry. These tools
are what separates us from the common man and make surveying the
profession it is. Search for other software and hardware but the tools
that best position you in the market are the ones you want. If It is
Autodesk and Softdesk, then don't handicap yourselves by purchasing
products that will limit your ability to perform.

Mike- We used to use a Wild T-1600 and a Gre Data collector. When we
downloaded the data collector and processed the data in Wildsoft, it
genetated the descriptors from the codes. We then saved the information as
an ASCII file and imported it into Softdesk via the survey/ collection(?)
module. Softdesk will support many file types, i.e. D.C.A. , CivilSoft,
C&G;, etc. You should be able to get through it with a little effort.

Subject: geographic centers of 50 states
From: Deana Sanders
Date: Mon, 6 Jan 97 23:16:18 -0500
Hi. I am working on a project that requires me to find out the
latitude/longitude coordinates of the geographic centers of
each of the 50 states. I spent the day searching the Web for
any lists, searches, queries, etc. Would any of you know of
any compiled list of these coordinates?
Your help is greatly appreciated. Either e-mail or post an
answer here.
Thanks,
Deana Sanders

Dear Helen:
You might try the web sites of the manufacturers. I only know of
http://www.sperry-marine.com/cgi-bin/htmlscript?main.hts
I'm sure there are others. They may be of help.
Best wishes,
Tony

I don't think my first post made it here, so I'll try again. I
am working on a project that requires me to find out the
lat/long coordinates of the geographic centers of each of the
50 states. I spent much of the day searching the Web, but was
unable to find anything. If any of you know a resource that
could give me this information, I would appreciate it.

Ed, I posed your question to one of my buddies at the Athletic
Department at
Auburn University (thinking that he would have time to look it up since
football season is over now) but all I got was this response.
"Great question. I don't know the answer. Maybe you should call the
NCAA (913) 339-1906 or the SEC (205) 458-3000."
He must be taking all of his time to prepare for next year. I hope
so....
