Better than decomposing, I suppose, which is what most Baroque composers
are doing now! (Dare I say all? Not in this crowd!)
Sorry. A moment of weakness.

Rule 3 means that we have to explain everything, including the origin of
the universe and man without God. Isaac Newton would have agreed with
assumptions 1 and 2, but not 3, for he believed that the world was
created by God in a special creation, and that the earth was destroyed
by the Genesis flood.

I Kings 7:23 (NIV translation)
He made the Sea of cast metal, circular in shape, measuring ten cubits
from rim to rim and five cubits high. It took a line of thirty cubits to
  measure around it.
The Bible Gateway web site is a good resource for these things. It has
multiple translations and search facilities.

Subject: Asheville, North Carolina. Caves? Mines? Close mtns? 1-2 days
From: x@apocalypse.org (Xochi Zen)
Date: 29 Aug 1996 20:38:43 -0400
I'm going to spending a day or two in Asheville, NC, and was
wondering if there were any interesting caves/mines/mountains
within a short drive of the city... say, 30 mins or so.
For mountains, I'd rather go for views rather than a stamina test.
An hour hike would suit me just fine.
Just read that the Smokey Mtns have 400-600 black bears. How do I
*not* get mauled? I'm not so sure I should even go into the mtns.
I'm used to the White Mtns in New Hampshire where there are very
few dangerous critters.
I could stay in the area longer if only I could find cheap accomodations.
I usually stay in youth hostels when I travel (can't beat $8-$12 a
night!!!), but there don't seem to be any in the Asheville area.
Does anyone here know of any?
I know there's a university in the city... anyone know if they operate
any dorms in the summer as hostels?
For caves, a show cave would be fine, because I'm fairly new to caving.
Or a beginner's cave.
Lastly, I was wondering if there were any inexpensive buses from
the airport into the city.
Thanks in advance. I'd appreciate a quick response if possible,
because I leave for Asheville saturday morning!

Don't know about gold and jewelry, but there was an article in
the newspaper about radioactive iron used to make cast iron
patio furniture. They found out about it when a truck delivering
the furniture took a wrong turn and drove by a gate for a nuclear
power plant. It set off the alarms for the power plant, so they
had to investigate the truck. At first they thought it might be
smuggling plutonium out, but it turned out to be the furniture
that was radioactive.

Seismicity Report for Northern California,
the Nation, and the World for the week of
August 22 - 28, 1996
Stephen R. Walter and Fred W. Klein
U.S. Geological Survey
345 Middlefield Rd. MS-977, Menlo Park, CA 94025
San Francisco Bay Area
Seismicity in the Bay Area was very comparable to the normal
levels of last week. During the seven-day period ending at
midnight on August 28, 1996 the U.S. Geological Survey office in
Menlo Park recorded 32 earthquakes of magnitude one (M1) and
greater within the San Francisco Bay area shown in Figure 1.
Three were as large as M2. This total compares to 33
earthquakes during the previous seven-day period (August 15-21),
three of which were as large as M2.
The largest earthquake of the week was on August 23 (figure
1/1) near Hollister and was felt by local residents. A swarm of
four earthquakes between magnitudes 1.9 and 1.2 occurred on the
Hayward Fault in Berkeley on August 25 (#1/2). A magnitude 2.1
event near Livermore (#1/4) was located between the rupture
areas of the M 5.8 Livermore earthquake of 1/24/80 to the north
and the M 5.7 Mt. Lewis earthquake of 3/24/86 to the south.
Northern & Central California
It was an average week in Northern California. Earthquakes may not
have been vacationing out of the state, but they were certainly relaxing
and taking life easy in the pleasant weather. The only magnitude 3 or
larger was on the active Mendocino Fault 90 miles offshore. Several other
magnitude 2 events were notable including a M 2.4 near Red Bluff (#2/1), a
trio of M 2.1-2.2 events 16 miles NW of San Simeon (#2/3) and an M 2.9
earthquake 10 miles NW of Bishop to close the week out.
Long Valley Caldera
It was an unusually quiet week at Long Valley. There were only four
events larger than M 1.5 and none larger than 2.0. This was the quietest
week in more than a year.
USA Seismicity (August 20-28, 1996)
The U.S. was also relatively quiet. Most activity was under the
Aleutian Islands of Alaska (several magnitude 4's). The continental U.S.,
Southern California, and Hawaii were also quiet. An earthquake near the
Oregon-Washington border was only magnitude 2.6 (figure 4 #1).
The Planet Earth (August 20-28, 199)
The largest earthquakes in the world were near the Fiji Islands (M 5.4
on 8/27), the isolated Mid-Indian Ocean Ridge (M 5.9 on 8/27) and in the
Solomon Islands (M 5.5 on 8/28). Two people were injured in the M 5.0
Ecuador earthquake on 8/25.

Note: Computer users can get faster access to the Weekly Seismicity
Reports in any of three ways:
       1. World-Wide-Web (WWW) access: http://quake.wr.usgs.gov
       2. Anonymous FTP access: quake.wr.usgs.gov
                                          (in pub/www/QUAKES/WEEKREPS)
       3. Email Access: (send email to michael@andreas.wr.usgs.gov)
Notes for Table 1:
Origin time in the list is in GMT, in the text and on maps
       it is in local time.
N RD: is the number of readings used to locate the event.
N S: is the number of S waves in N RD.
RMS SEC: is the root mean squared residual misfit for the
location is seconds, the lower the better, over 0.3
to 0.5 seconds is getting bad, but this is machine,
                not hand timed, data.
ERH: is the estimated horizontal error in kilometers.
ERZ: is the estimated vertical error in kilometers.
N FM: is the number of readings used to compute the magnitude.
REMKS: obtuse region codes that denote the velocity model
              used to locate the event.
DUR MAG: is the magnitude as determined from the duration of
the seismograms, not the amplitude. Sort of like
going to echo canyon and measuring how loud your
                yell is by counting echos.
FIG: denotes the figure/event number in the maps posted separately.

If the natural laws of the universe constitute a consistent set
of rules, then there will always be laws that we do not know
about (Gdel's theorem bastardized). A being governed by these
laws would therefore be supernatural. We would not be able to
discover the laws by which he acts, since they would not be
representable in the natural laws that describe our universe.
On the other hand, if you reject the idea that the natural
laws of the universe compose a consistent set of rules, then
they are inconsistent and "supernatural" has no meaning.
On the third hand, if you say that the natural laws of the
universe are infinite in number, then we can't know them
all and "supernatural" looses its meaning once again.
If you look at the universe as a four dimensional solid
(ignore one of our spacial dimensions and assign it to
time and you will get a good image), then maybe God is
just some gal who can manipulate this solid like a
child rolling silly putty between her hands. Her actions,
to us, being supernatural since we cannot understand how
she can manipulate time and space like that.
I understand that some theories that explain the
Hubble expansion of space say that it is topologically
equivalent to our 3D space being [on] the surface of
an expanding 4D sphere. To say that there are no
supernatural beings of higher dimension, you would
have to say that there are no higher dimensional
spaces of which our space is just a part. This
would be a sweeping statement even for a theist.

Inherent in my belief of God as 'the' all powerful being is His capacity
to know what kind of Universe he wanted, and that He had the ability to
make choices.
For me it is then easy to see that he would create, or choose, the "Laws
of Physics" that would facilitate the creation of the universe He
wanted.

As of this day, I have switched over to Auto-Select Incoming Email.
Thus, if you need to get in touch with me and it is important, you can
do so by posting to the Net and I will probably see it and then I can
contact you by email.
Until electronic age can figure out how to deal with **Instant
Cash**, emailing you duplicates of what you post, emailbombing, forging
name to subscription lists, until that is solved the time wasted on
this nonsense does not equal the one or two useful emails.
I posted before that I think over 1/2 of the problems of Internet are
the fact that edu and govt have free accounts. A local telephone call
is 10 cents. I feel that emailbombing and forged names to lists (in
fact these lists will dry up) will dry up if a 10cent charge was placed
on all "Send Key" presses. I feel that emailbombing and forged lists
are all a direct result of free accounts by edu and govt. Put a little
money behind an action and people all of a sudden act more responsible
and wiser.
So the above AUTORESPONSE Forgerers Lucas,Bromage,Evens is the last
one of those that will be posted to the NET since my email box is now

You know, I agree with all of this. Tell it to the bigot Kennedy. The only
thing I don't agree with is the comment about dying on the side of the
road. This country is far from being that harsh. A person can't live as
well off welfare relative to the median income in this country as he could
in many western European nations, but basic needs are, in fact, met. I
know people on welfare. They're doing fine. In fact, they're doing well
enough that they feel no compulsion to work.

I'm kind of tired of looking up statistics, so I won't this time unless
somebody just has to have the latest. Exchange rates fluctuate, and some
currencies are enormously over valued. But if we compare earnings to cost
of goods and services, which is the most accurate indicator of the meaning
of money, the U.S. outpaces any other economy by a considerable margin.
Canada and Switzerland are next, both with about 80% buying power, and the
other major economies in Europe, along with Japan, fill a fairly
continuous range below 80%. The UK is about 70%.
I appreciate your comments, Patrick. I think the whole argument was stupid
to begin with. Different people value different things... and Kennedy is
nothing but a bigot to be making unsupported statements about mythical
effects of mass media and popular culture on the supposedly inferior U.S.
educational system. People who are likely to contribute in a significant
way to society tend to educate themselves.

I think you mix to different things here. One is a definition of god
and I would deem the one above to be adequate. The other issue is
operational, i.e. can humans, using this definition as a criterion,
determine whether a given entity is indeed god. The answer, IMO is
no, just for the reasons you gave. So, there is no contradiction.
In fact I would push it one step further and claim that no definition
that can be used as "operational definition" in the sense mentioned
above may exist since it would amount to having a rule allowing you to
determine whether a given entity is capable ov violating any rule.
There is a logical contradiction here.

Re: Uniqueness; fingerprints; 'Science of Place' Re: Mars rock
I have been talking for some time on the Net the distinction of past
science and future science. Finding out the extinction of dinosaurs is
using science to understand the past. Searching for a room temperature
superconductor is using science and everything else for the future.
Before I get off of track let me hit the conclusion here and all at
once. I believe, armed with the Atom Totality theory that there is a
possibility of knowing the past and the future in an instant of time.
Now this sounds like some science fiction movie but let me illustrate
what I mean. Science is heavily used to find out what happened in the
past. Witness the recent Mars rock of unravelling that life in that
rock. And there is future seeking knowledge in science, take for
example if you fire a rocketship and using the laws os mechanics we
with confidence know the future path of that rocket. In the Atom
Totality theory, as science gets better and better there is the
possibility that science knowledge of the past will join with science
knowledge of the future. So, ideally, can the past and the future be
all known? Can physics provide an answer to that? I think it can with
the Atom Totality. That as we progress from Element 94 Universe to 96
to 98 etc we can all decay back down to what I call a super neutron,
element 0. So, let us say the universe goes up to Element 114 Atom
Totality then by some mechanism unknown to me, but possible in nuclear
physics, that Element 114 which is the total universe can revert into a
Superneutron, a neutron with a lot of energy. If such a thing would
happen then the past will equal the future in that instant or moment
that the Element 114 Universe changes down to a SuperNeutron Universe.
You see, god is an atom and the only things that exist are atoms. So
that time is merely the count and arrangement of atoms. Count of only 1
neutron is the beginning and it could revert back to a neutron and so
be the end, but that is another beginning again.
The main idea I wanted to get out is the idea that in a Atom Totality
theory, the backward looking sciences, the detective sciences can equal
the future-forward looking sciences. This is possible with the idea
that a say Element 114 or any large number can revert back to a Neutron
Atom Totality.

We will move our UNIX SW to NT. Since it is designed as a TCP/IP

users to have a free choice for the server, UNIX ot NT, using the

Obviously an early error in translation. I'm sure the original passage
must have read 31.415928 cubits. Either that or they inadvertently
measured a chord rather than the diameter. Or maybe the walls were
707964 cubits thick, and they gave outside diameter and inside
circumference. See how easy it is to rationalize from mythology?

that the Face on Mars and nearby conical and pyramidal structures are NOT
natural features. I was flown back to the Cody Convention on such matters
in the Fall of 1994 by the Hoagland group. I delivered a paper on my
observations and was pleased that at least two other geologists were on
the side of an artificial face, and none opposed. All favor a

Besides the books and videotapes of Hoagland, see the books by Mark
