Bernstein just published with a title something like Against the Gods: A history of risk which provides an intellectual history of probability. I skimmed it a couple of months ago. I believe there was a brief section on Aristotle, and there would be references. I'm sure that there are better sources, but this might be one place to start. -j -- Jeffrey Goldberg +44 (0)1234 750 111 x 2826 Cranfield Computer Centre FAX 751 814 J.Goldberg@Cranfield.ac.uk http://WWW.Cranfield.ac.uk/public/cc/cc047/ Relativism is the triumph of authority over truth, convention over justice.Return to Top
Hi, a friend of mine is actually writing a brief story. Some days ago he asked to me for some hints about one of the main characters of his story, a supposedly well known matematical and computer genius. I don't know exactly which is the story's context, but somewhere in the story the genius comes out stating a definition of 'fractals' which comes out to be a pearl of humanistic wishdom being able to touch someone other's feelings. Since I really dislike stories pretending to be 'scientific' while abusing and distorcing the meaning of every matter they speak about, I also preferred to give a matematically correct definition. I thinked a lot about it. I also searched many stuff regarding fractals throught the web. Well, since I'm not a genius nor even a matematician, I am still unable to give an answer to my friend... Would anybody out there like to engage this challenge? Even someone other's statements are accepted, provided you can cite the source. By the way, I don't believe there will be any prize or award for your suggestions, but we would appreciate every hint from you.
