Subject: Materials Science Postdoctoral Position at NRL
From: Fonda@anvil.nrl.navy.mil (Richard W. Fonda)
Date: 1 Nov 1996 15:01:47 GMT
Postdoctoral researcher (US citizens only)
The Physical Metallurgy Branch of the Naval Research Laboratory
currently has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to study
solid-solid phase transformations. This research will employ
transmission electron microscopy and other techniques to examine solid
state phase transformations, interfacial and defect structures, and
processing-microstructure-property relationships in model and
commercial metallic alloys. Current research interests range from
fundamental studies of microstructural evolution in ferrous alloys,
transformations within metallic thin films and multilayers, and the
crystallography and transformation behavior of advanced shape memory
alloys to more applied research on low-carbon steel weldments, new
beta-titanium alloys, and high-Tc superconducting thin films. This
position is available for immediate occupancy (at least within the
constraints of the postdoctoral programs - applications due Jan 1 or
Jan 15). Please contact either myself (Fonda@anvil.nrl.navy.mil,
202-767-2622) or Dr. George Spanos (Spanos@anvil.nrl.navy.mil,
202-767-5799) if interested, to obtain further details about these and
other research programs.

I regulary order these sorts of chemicals and worse. No problem.
However, I live in constant fear of the the B.A.T. or D.E.A. coming in here
in ninja suits like Iwo Jima and killing our pet cat in front
of my wife. That is better than the constant fear of losing
your grant, being #@%$@@ by your PI, or having to justify your
work all the time to idiots..

Subject: Interview request: Maintaining a happy, productive, lab
From: finn@nasw.org (Robert Finn)
Date: Mon, 04 Nov 1996 18:56:57 GMT
I am a free-lance science writer and a contributing editor at The
Scientist, "the newspaper for the life sciences professional."
For an article in an upcoming issue of The Scientist, I wish to
interview life scientists who can discuss the things that make a
research lab happy and productive -- and the things that may make a
lab unhappy or unproductive.
I'd like to interview people who have some insight into these issues
by virture of one of the following characteristics:
1. People who have explicitly studied lab managment.
2. Scientists who have managed or worked in particularly happy,
productive labs who are willing to discuss their experiences.
3. Scientists who have managed or worked in especially UNhappy or
UNproductive labs who are willing to discuss their experiences. I am
willing to offer anonymity to people and labs in this category.
I will be conducing telephone interviews on this subject for the next
several days. If you are interested in being interviewed, please send
me e-mail (finn@nasw.org) telling me a bit about yourself and your
connection to this topic. Include your phone number and let me know
the best times to reach you.
Thanks for your help.
