Subject: Heavy Metal Testing in plants
From: jlee@monmouth.com (John Lee)
Date: Sun, 08 Dec 1996 23:36:40 GMT
Hi,
I'm a Sophomore at the Ocean Township High School in NJ. For
my Honors biology class, each person has to do an orginal research
project that will be presented to the NJ Junior Academy of Science.
For my project, I'm doing research to see if crop plants will
take in heavy metals if municipal sludge is used to fetilize the soil.
My question is, what's the best/easiest way for me to detect
heavy metals, such as Mercury, Lead, or Cadmium. What kind of
equipment do I need? How would I be able to do this?
	Thank you.

CHRISTMAS DINNER EVENT
featuring
Dr. J.C. Scaiano
Professor of Chemistry
University of Ottawa
Come celebrate the festive season with us at The Pines at The Monterey
Inn- everyone is welcome! The menu includes a Monterey salad with
sundried tomato vinaigrette, roast chicken dinner with baby new
potatoes and roasted fall vegetables, followed by a selection of
French pastries. After dinner relax and enjoy a presentation on
Melatonin: Science and Fiction by our guest speaker, Dr. Tito Scaiano.
MELATONIN: SCIENCE AND FICTION
Melatonin has been called the "wonder drug" because of the many
functions that it has been attributed. From sleep disorders to aging
and cancer, melatonin is promoted as the best nutritional supplement.
Does the chemistry and spectroscopy of melatonin support any of these
claims? What do we really know about the "supermolecule"? This
presentation will concentrate on the spectroscopy and free radical
chemistry of melatonin, with emphasis on the relationship between
these properties and the claims on melatonin.
