The Harvard University Department of Psychology's Social Conflict Research Group (SCRG) invites you to participate in an interesting protocol on the WWW. The SCRG is investigating the relationship between social identity and social conflict. In particular, the group intends to explore the relationship between attitudes towards abortion (as one aspect of social identity) and other moral dilemmas. BLOOD PRESSURE & CARDIAC OUTPUT MEASUREMENT IN MICE & RATS During the last decade, the production of transgenic mice, with different gene expression provided a valuable tool for the study of genes involved in cardiovascular functions in recipient. In small animal, the hemodynamic measurement is very limited because of the animal size. The most important and basic cardiovascular parameters, considered by physiologists and pharmacologists, are cardiac output, blood pressure, heart rate and stroke volume. Despite the plethora of instruments currently available for studying the above mentioned parameters in laboratory animals, no such instrument can measure all four parameters simultaneously except CARDIOMAX-IIR. Thermodilution technique in measuring cardiac output is most frequently used in human and in different animals. A little information is available in measuring cardiac output in mice. Recently, we have established the measurement of cardiac output in mice by thermodilution technique using CARDIOMAX-IIR. We injected a bolus of 15 ul of saline (room temp.) through jugular vein to the vena cava and the resultant change in temperature was measured in the arch of aorta. VENTILATOR FOR WIDE RANGE OF ANIMALS Our microprocessor controlled ventilator is suitable for use with animals from mice to rabbits. The ventilator operates on the piston in cylinder principle but is powered by a microstepping motor controlled by a microprocessor. Such design assures ability of easy adjustment of respiration frequency, speed of piston during each moment of the respiratory cycle, delivered tidal volume and inspiratory/expiratory ratio. The accuracy of air volume is assured in this system with virtually leak-free electronic valves and graphite piston in a glass cylinder. No lubricants which could contaminate the respiratory air are needed. The ventilator features five interchangeable cylinders covering tidal volume range from 0.08 to 50 ml and respiration frequency of 5 to 200 breaths per minute.
