I have also heard the same and that Nicolet will be offering a low end 
FTIR that is not the Protege

You are correct concerning the two drawbacks of CsI, but should be Ok if
you keep it protected and are not too concerned with high (better than 1
cm-1) resolution.  Also consider 1) probably something like 1% of FTIRs
are shipped with CsI optics 2) Even with CsI the S/N at the low end will
be crummy using std source/detector/purge options.  Low-mid
resolution/high concentration samples you will probably be OK,
otherwise....
