Petroleum Resources

Throughout the day, we have visited petroleum related Internet sites. Once again, remember that the Internet is growing and changing every day. The Web Reference section in this chapter consists of lists of Internet sites which may prove useful to you. This list is by no means exhaustive, there are probably excellant sites which are not on it. Because it is selective, however, it is a somewhat manageable starting place for your exploration of the Internet. Petroleum resources on the Internet fall into five broad categories: organizations, businesses, libraries, professional societies, and collections of petroleum related resources.

Examples of organizations which have useful sights on the Internet are the Petroleum Technology Transfer Council (PTTC), the Gas Research Institute (GRI), Federal agencies (e.g., USGS, US Department of Energy), and State agencies (e.g., state geological surveys, university research groups, state environmental regulatory agencies).

The PTTC has national and regional web sites that are dedicated to making new technologies easily accessible to the independent producer. GRI allows you to submit on-line subject searches (literature, projects) of its extensive research database. Government agencies have quite a bit of public domain information and software, some of which is available for download on the Internet. Federal agencies offer access to digital map data (USGS), as well as energy related software (U. S. Department of Energy). A review of the Rocky Mountain area revealed regulatory information, contact information, geologic information to download, and production data to download at various state agency Web sites (see Rockies Resources).

On-line businesses include sites for individual oil and gas companies, software companies, on-line clearing houses for prospects, plays, and information (e.g., the Discovery Place, worldenergy), and service companies (e.g., Penn Well Publishing, Schlumberger).

Libraries have some of the most useful sites. The Library of Congress has an extensive set of hyper-links to library resources nationwide. In addition to searching collections state wide, the Colorado Area Regional Library (CARL) service (http://www.carl.org) offers the service Uncover. Uncover offers free searches of an extensive Journal database as well as special services such as the e-mail delivery of current table of contents for the Journals which you designate and FAX delivery of selected articles.

Most professional societies (e.g., SPE, AAPG, and GSA) have Web sites. The Computer Oriented Geological Society (COGS), part of AAPG, has an excellent FTP site which offers petroleum related software (ftp://ftp.csn.net/COGS/ ). At the GSA site (http://www.geosociety.org/) you can review sessions and abstracts for the national GSA meeting. A great deal of pertinent information is available at these sites, including on-line journals and abstracts. Finally, some sites specialize in hyper-linked collections of petroleum related resources. Consider these a categorical index for petroleum, as such, they are great places to begin searches on the Web. A section listing these sites is included in the Web References at the end of this chapter.

Resource Overview Exercise

I. Go to one of the the locations given below. Are there items of interest? Can you follow some hyper-links to other sites of interest? When you finish the exercise for one site, visit the other sites.

II. Here is a new set of sites to surf -

III. And more -

IV. And even more -

V. I think you get the idea - this is just the tip of today's Internet iceberg. We hope that you leave this guide with a greatly increased understanding of the resources available to you on the Internet and a clear understanding of how to get on the Web. We'll look for you in cyberspace - vsare@mines.edu
