Subject: mechanical desktop under NT4.0
From: mjmackin@handling.com (Matt.)
Date: Tue, 12 Nov 1996 19:51:53 GMT
I finally got my NT 4.0 loaded onto my computer at home. I loaded on
the mechanical Desktop. I keep on getting a win32.sys error, and the
whole O/S just crashes.
Does this sound like an incompatibility error, or just Win NT4.0 isn't
quite as stable as 3.51?
The autocad was running fine under NT 3.51 on this system. Any help
would be much appreciated.

Subject: HP 650c Plotter attached to Novell Netware 4.1 running on Windows85
From: tjmarket@ix.netcom.com
Date: 12 Nov 1996 19:35:31 GMT
We've got an interesting situation. A plotter is attached to a Novell Netware 4.1
Network using an HP JetDirect Card. Autocad 12 is running on a Windows95
workstation. All printers are set up in accordance with HP's latest drivers and
Microsoft.
So, Here's the problem...
The jobs are not printing quickly. They spool for 45 to 60 minutes and then print.
What's going on.
Help me O-B-WAN-KEN-OBEE, you are my only hope...

We sit and wait for it to be added to the package.
We are in a simular boat as you are. Right now MCAD1.1 doesn't
support defining external threads. What we do is draw the part, then
manually add in the hidden lines and the thread notes onto the
drawing, then put a note outside the title block that the threads are
not parrametric.
Speak with your dealer, and tell them what you would like to see
inside of the next release of Mechanical Desktop. The desktop team do
listen to the customer requests, and if there is a demand for a
change, they will consider changing it.
I will say that I have nothing but good experiances dealing with this
group. The 1.1 upgrade solved most of my problems, with the remaining
ones being tied into Autocad 13 limitations. Stick with it. This
package will pay for it self many times over in a short while.

Hello everybody.
The matter of this posting is to ask if anyone knows if I can work with
Autoicad r13_c4 and Windows NT in the same way I use it in an Ms-DOS
environment, using one Screen for text and the other for Draw.
I don't know if this can be made, using windows NT or using the DOS version
of Autocad.
Thanks for any help

We've been Cyco's Workflow version 4.07 for almost a year now. We're
managing about 6000 drawing files, with carefully chosen index files
speed and managability should be good.
We don't use any briefcase stuff (yet). Don't count on the ability to
plot drawings from AMW; it outputs the viewer (which is good btw) to the
Windows system printer. (Oh yea, we're using Windows 3.11) This relies
heavily on the quality of that driver (pen widths!) and more importantly,
is mindnumbingly slow. Just don't.
Apart from that; works fine for us (engineering group, 17 CAD stations)
About Workcenter; last year it wasn't really a ready product; it then
used the sybase engine, but they've replaced that. Perhaps if they use an
ODBC driver...
Writing your own with acces (or similar) is certainly possible; but
really do know how you work with drawings, VBA and DB's!!
If you'd like more info; mail me...
Good luck

I have a female boss already, and she is open enough to realize that when I say
draftsman or designer, I mean the same thing. She calls them the same... Why
does everything have to be so "politically correct". Why would you be offended
to be called a draftsman if that is what you have studied to be? What would you
rather be called? A draftswoman? Geeez.... I agree with Gary, get a life!

Subject: R13 and Truetype
From: sk@dolby.com
Date: Tue, 12 Nov 1996 21:09:34 GMT
We are finding that when use a Truetype font (*.TTF) by loading it
with the STYLE command, we can export the graphic of the font nicely
with the WMFOUT command, which make a WMF file. Loading the WMF file
in to Word works well and produces clean output on non-postscript
printers. The text is no longer text but is instead filled vectors.
But strangely we find that when we use the PRINT command in R13 to
print the Acad file with the Truetype font the font doesn't look
clean. Why does this happen?

Yes it is a compiled program. Even if you did get a de-compiler,
fortunately it is not like unprotecting AutoLISP. What you will get
is machine language. Well, if you want to learn that, good luck.

Ralf-
Have you checked out the sample code provided in the latest ARX SDK 1.1
(downloadable from the Autodesk web site as part of the ARX SDK -
www.autodesk.com).
You should consider coming out to California for one of our 3 days
hands-on ARX training classes. The class takes you through creating
your own custom objects, using reactors, MFC with ARX and much much
more. The teachers are experienced C++ programmers.
We may be holding an ARX class in the Detroit area in january which
might be easier for you to attend. Drop me a line.
Cheers,

Yeah, as long as you're a Registered Developer and have access to the
API. It's nice how AutoLISP doesn't support some of the new objects in
R13. Guess you guys are going down the path that the Bentley brothers
left, and making you're system more proprietary. It won't be long
before AutoCAD has objects that are 3rd party developer specific, and
can only be modified by a Strategic Developer's application. Yeah,
AutoCAD will be able to view and plot that door, but it won't be able
to make it bigger or smaller 'cause it doesn't know what a door is.
But if you buy this other application for only ...
Been there, done that. Welcome to CAD by ILM - smoke and mirrors.

Using Acad R12, I can't get the view I need using the vpoint or dview
commands. Every time I cross the X-Y plane, the drawing "reverses".
What wound be nice would be a command that allowed the draftperson to
use their left or right arrows to rotate the camera around the
viewpoint, the up and down keys to raise or lower the camera, and the
page up or page down keys to move the camera in or out. the immage would
be constantly redisplayed so you could see what you were getting.
Any help?

Rod,
the guy didn't ask how to *automate* the conversion. I think your
plug would have looked less shameless if you had at least told him
that the solution is simply to use the command "SAVEASR12".
At least that's what the book (Inside AutoCAD R13) says - we don't
have R13.
IMHO your plug was completely uncalled for. How would Mike look
in the eyes of a client who can't even RTFM, if he went there
and said
"Ah, look, you gotta buy this program and sorta set it up
on your system, and then you only have to learn how to run
it and when and thats it."
instead of just telling them the name of the built-in command!

Subject: Plotting Problem w/Acad 13c4 and Novell
From: SKIDMARX@worldnet.att.net
Date: 12 Nov 1996 23:12:58 GMT
Hello All,
I need help with a plotting problem.
I'm running Autocad R13c4 on Win95 through a Novell 4.10 server with a
HP Laserjet 4 printer setup off the server as Printer_Q1.
Autocad is set up to plot to a HPGL/2 plotter to LPT1. Everything ran fine
for over a year, and all of a sudden I'm getting this error message:
The Operating System detected the following error(s) on LPT1:
	Plotter disabled.
	* Cannot open port
I've reinstalled the laserjet printer driver in windows. Reset the printer queue.
Print a test page via Properties. Deleted all Acad INI and CFG files and reset
Acad as is a fresh install. Deleted all other printers in windows, but still the
error persists, and it is driving me nuts.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. E-mail or post a response here.
Thanks much ...

though at times it can be tricky. The thing to note is that the first time I have managed to crash
R13 running on Nt workstation was in using it.
So good luck.

Subject: Integrating AutoLISP and VB with DDE
From: polanskt@chesapeake.net (Thomas N. Polanski)
Date: Wed, 13 Nov 1996 02:39:38 GMT
Hi all:
Just thought I would give a heads up to any who may be interested. An article entitled
"Integrating Visual Basic and AutoCAD Release 13 Applications Using DDE" has been placed
on the NAAUG Programming SIG web page. It covers aspects of sending data between VB and
AutoCAD (both ways), driving AutoLISP from VB (and vice-versa), etc. Source code for the
example application, as well as the lisp routines, VB application set-up files, etc. are
available for download from the article. I would certainly welcome any feedback or
questions. The page is at:

version for that matter) in HP's listing. We have DOS - any suggestions
appreciated. Please email me at jlw@aol.com

Jane,
I have worked for several women and I'm sure that I will work for
and with many more. The terms salesman, draftsman, mailman, ... have
been in use for more years than we have been around. Everyone was OK with
these terms until a feminist decided that they were degrading to women.
Since the terms are GENERIC I do not see how this can be the case. Where
do we stop??? Do we change mankind to humankind? That doesn't work
either because human contains "man" also. How about personkind? Do we
also change woman to womyn?? People should be able to use the term of
their choice without the fear of retribution form the oppossing camp. I
feel that Katrina was out-of-line when she wrote her comment about the
survey. I also feel that any boss that that takes offense to the original
terms has too much time on their hands. I have asked several female
friends and co-workers about this topic and they all agree with my point
of view. On a related topic, using the term he/she is even worse. Choose
one or the other or use a generic term. Enough for today.

Here is a tricky one:
I need to redefine single keyboard keys to paste strings into autocad.
Now because of this, the redefinition can only be active when in an
AutoCAD command.
So I am currently attempting to write a windows keyboard hook program
with an interface =
to AutoLisp. Futher more my program shall only be active if the active
window is AutoCAD =
or AutoCAD text screen. Although I have the code ready for Sending the
keys, =
I need to be able to create the interface to AutoLisp. =
I am using Visual C++ 4.0, and am trying to create =
an ADS (Still keeping away from ARX) program from what I already have.
The problem is that I cannot even get the AutoDESK ADS templates to
compile.
I believe I have followed all the instructions from the AutoDesk
Technical document entitled
"Compiling ADS with Visual C++ 4.0"
I am currently not at the computer with the compiler, so I cannot give
you the exact error messages
that I get.
Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.
regards,
    Hendrik Ebber.

Brad if you're using a ttf you can use the variable textfill
otherwise there is no other variable to use. there are a number of font
files out there that is pre-filled. as soon as I can find ours I will send it
to you.
Maybe someone reading this has one that they can give you also.

You can have your tablet calibrate by first drawing your borders in acad
to the dimensions you wish to transfer. during the calibation sequence
pick points on your paper that you know to correspond to your cad dwg,
then pick points on the cad dwg to correspond. pick at least four points
to get projective response.

Ari: How are you converting the data? Are you using MicroStation
products? If so, what specific versions are you using? Have you
tried going through DWG (although it certainly shouldn't make a
difference.) Where did the DXF file originate? Can't seem to recall
hearing about any of the things that you mention here, but we may be
able to help out with any additional information that you can supply.

If you've got an error involving ACAD.EXE chances are the file has been
corrupted. You may have to reinstall. I always keep a copy of ACAD.EXE
in another directory just for such a case......

Very weak and wrong assumption!
I bet you can easily think of a couple dozen cases where you have
external (male) threads on shafts just in your office/home environment.
All non-bolt origins.
