It looks almost like Saturn. By the way, the raw pixel data shows it is considerably brighter than HB. The picture was taken November 14 at 6:10 pm CST in Houston. The shot is 12 3 second exposures combined taken with a Meade LX-200 (10" f6.3) and that new Celestron CCD. After some seconds I figured that they meant miles and the sign made sense to me. But the truly bad things are all the self invented abbreviations like cms, gms or kph which mean something totally different when interpreted properly. Tolerating these mistakes usually gives the impression that SI is basically like the old system, which is untrue. In order to get its full merit (especially for rapidly linking different units together in calculations) you just HAVE to use them correctly. It only applies when matter e.g. the Bohr model of electron shells etc. is involved ? That is, in something called free-space, the E=hw is useless ? Is this the "tree falling in the forest" paradigm ? A magnet surrounded by iron filings exhibits magnetic field quantization nicely I think. When the field passes through uniform spread of filings the filings move into Faraday lines. Why ? The filings bunch together into the Faraday lines. They quantize in this way because the magnetic field prefers to go through the filings rather than free space. This leaves a magnetic depletion zone between the lines where filings were, while additional filings placed in these zones will move into the existing lines. The question is, whether the magnetic field is quantized in such a way in "free-space" rather than a continuously varying field strength ? Sometimes, they can process the data right away and release the results. There are also some cases where the director uses discretionary time for an unexpected occurance, and then makes them public right away. An example of this is the Hubble Deep field (well not unexpected but made public right away so anyone can work on the data). Sometimes, an image is taken only for planning purposes. I can't speak to the comet case directly but it depends. This is an interesting project. I wish I had the time to participate. I also like your questions. I think you're going to find that there isn't much difference. I suspect that differences in alertness (I'm a "morning" person) are more related to chemical than thermal changes. I've noticed that (all questions of cause and effect aside), my alertness is roughly out of phase with my body temperature. That is, I'm most alert when my body is coolest.Return to Top

A scientist mathmatically proved the existance of and a method of getting into "hyper-space". He kept trying to get the government to notice and fund his project and he kept getting passed over in favor of "goof-ball" theories. He finally storms into the office of the scientist in charge of allocating research money and demanded an explanation. The Chief scientist replied that they had discovere "hyper-space" a long time ago and that light move *slower* in "hyper-space" than it did in "normal space". There is a related deffinition of life that one might want to consider, related not to the entropy by to the complexity. (G. J. Chaitin gave me the idea, but I think my ideas on the topic have wandered considerably since I read his articles, and I'm really not certain how much of which follows is his, and how much is my own wanderings). Definition: One system, A, is "more alive" than another, B, if, given complete knowledge of macroscopic parameters and no other information, it is more difficult derive all information possible on the future state of system B than A. For example, lets examine a single planet orbiting a single star. Given an initial macroscopic state, predicting it's future state is pretty easy. The system isn't very alive. Look add a third body. Knowing only macroscopic parameters (the state to a certain boundary precission), one cannot perfectly predict it's future state. However, a program which makes optimal use if the given information isn't very complex, just an application of basic physics on a few macroscopic objects. Look at a gas. Using standard thermo, doing the best you can do is still computationally fairly simple. Now, look at a tree. If you have only macroscopic information, the application of basic physics will not get you very much information. However, it is possible to compute some information on how it will grow based on it how much sun it gets, how much it rains, etc. It's actions are difficult to calcualte, but not only (though possibly partially) due to chaotic or random effects. Now, look at a person playing tenis. The actions are often difficult to predict, but again not entirely due to random and chaotic uncertainties. To maximize the information you can get out of macroscopic parameters, one needs to combine a lot of information (about the history of the person, how their parents etc. played, the particulars of their training, etc.) in a very complicated fassion. Furthermore, to understand the person in the more general case (not necessarily playing tenis) is exceptionally difficult. Another way of looking at this (I think more similar to Chaitins) has to do with at what point you give up on looking at something macroscopically and have to start looking at it microscopically to get the best return for you information. For the two body system, you're just done right away. For the three body system, you improve your prediction my going more and more microscopic. For a gas, you pretty much have to jump strait from macroscopic description to complete microscopic description. For a tree, however, you can go a long way with simulating more and more processes without having to go strait to the particle by particly approach for significant improvement.
