GSA Region 2 Wins Real Property Innovation Award for Sustainability

New York, NY and Worcester, MA – November 15, 2011 – World Energy Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ: XWES), a leading energy management services firm, today announced one of its longest-standing customers, the General Services Administration’s Northeast and Caribbean Region (GSA Region 2), has won a coveted GSA Achievement Award for Real Property Innovation. The award recognizes GSA Region 2, which manages procurement for federal buildings in New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, for its success purchasing high percentages of renewable power at affordable prices through an innovative reverse auction process administered by World Energy Solutions and SAIC.

A leader in green energy procurement, GSA Region 2 ran competitive procurements in November 2009 and 2010 over the World Energy Exchange®, which resulted in the purchase of more than 200 million kWh of electricity for federal facilities at a savings of over $3.5 million. Under the terms of the contracts, 95 percent of the energy will come from renewable sources. Additionally, three of Region 2’s largest facilities in New York City – 290 Broadway, 26 Federal Plaza, and 500 Pearl Street – will receive 100% percent renewable power over the entire term of the awarded contracts.

“GSA Region 2 is to be commended for its dedication to renewable energy purchasing,” said Jonathan Harvey, World Energy Solutions. “Not only has GSA Region 2 earned numerous awards for its innovation in energy procurement, which continues to deliver high percentages of green power to its facilities at low cost, but it also actively strives to exceed green standards. For example, in its most recent procurements Region 2 exceeded the DOE’s minimum green power procurement requirement while meeting a tighter renewable power definition that required renewables either be produced from resources located in the NYISO or be delivered into the NYISO. In fact, through the auction process, GSA was able to procure green power within the NYISO at a lower cost per kWh than its last procurement in 2007, before the new definition was in effect.”

The General Services Administration (GSA) Region 2 has purchased over 782 million kWh of renewable power since FY01, well before the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and Executive Order 13423 requirements promoted green purchasing. GSA Region 2 currently ranks number five on the top-ten list of largest purchasers of green power among federal government organizations within the Green Power partnership.
